How to find an unusual niche like this?

Finding the usual niche is easy; making the site a success on your own, something else altogether. Imagine going back in time to when no survivalist authority existed online. Could you be the one to bring about that authority? Possibly. But you'd need the passion and the knowledge and many other prerequisites relevant to the task. I could sit here all day and come up with software ideas, for instance, yet I'd need someone else to breath life into them because my coding skills (such as they are) are limited to CSS and HTML, neither of which are all that useful for software development. If I were you, I'd ask myself: "What is the one thing in life that I love more than anything else? The one thing." I'd be willing to bet you can make money at it.

The survival niche is really a huge market with many subniches.

What do you mean "found it"? That's like asking how you find unusual niches like 6-pack abs.

It comes from basic niche research. Just look around, pay attention and investigate what interests you.

Niches like this are found many different ways- maybe the person saw a huge survivalist convention in his city and thought- wow I had no idea this was so huge.

Or maybe he was doing basic keyword research and came across lucrative survival keywords.

Or maybe he was browsing a magazine stand and saw all the survival mags.

Or maybe he was researching a hunting niche and found the survival subniche.

Good niches are found through good niche research- they don't all just pop-off the top of someone's head.

So do good niche research to find strong niches like the survivalist niche - a very popular niche and a good niche to look for lucrative subniches in.

If you like this niche, take the URL and put it in the Google Keyword Planner and then go through all the keywords Google gives you.

Learn the jargon of the niche like "prepper". This is an excellent source and you can find jargon resources like this for many, many niches. Then take these colloquialisms and run them through Google Search and the KW Planner.

Look for affiliate products that you can sell to the market. Amazon is good for this market.

Engage that market on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, your blog etc.

Capture leads to a mailing list.

To find an unusual niche (unusual to you) look at magazine shelves on mainstream newsagents and high street book shops. These are prime retail estate it there is a book or a magazine then there is a market.

Then start to research online and see if its something you can add to and make money from.

The Dummies Bookstore, Magazines (check the ads in the back too), The News... all good ideas.

You can find some niches that you may ever have considered, like Bonsai Trees, Skateboard ramp plans, patio guarding, how to make homemade fishing lures.

There's still some low hanging fruit out there.

There's a niche for torches?

It was a great niche before 2012 as people were making massive money. Sadly, things are not so hot now. Most people finally wise up. Hard to unload that hand crank radio for an emergency. Oh yes, did I tell you it does short wave. Also, it uses vacuum tubes that can survive massive radiation in a nuclear war.

Not a lot of people lining up to buy gold coins. Perhaps you could sell your geiger counter to some one living near Chernobyl or Fukushima, but there are many radiation detecting devices on e-bay right now. All those bags of freeze dried soup... well, you could find a buyer - maybe, but not so sure. OK as for the deep underground shelter, it could be used as a climate controlled storage area. Plant those non GMO seeds and save on your groceries.

Look on the bright side, if North Korea decides to go crazy... you may survive.

The whole doomsday preppers niche is huge, people like Alex Jones keep that niche heathy with a steady flow of paranoia.

This is probably the best niche to get into at this time. I myself am preparing for the worst and have already spent almost $2,000.

Finding odd niches is sometimes easier than finding ways to monetize them. A few months ago, I decided to build a site in a similar niche - high end survival shelters. We're talking about underground, self-contained living units that range in price from $5000 to $1.5 million or so.

Problem? I couldn't find a single manufacturer of such products that had a functional affiliate program. I found a couple that claimed to, but on further contact, it turned out to be little more than "If a guy who owns a gun shop refers a customer to me, I'll give him a commission."

Nothing formal seems to exist in that niche, so I just moved on. Another interesting thing about that niche - all of their Websites look like they were built in 1995.

You can use Google Trends to see which niches are popular, on the rise and going out of style. You need to do market research using tools like Terapeak, which is a niche research tool.

In order for you to tap into hot untouched niches, you need to do in depth market research.

I wouldn't really consider survival to be that niche. It may be different for you, though that community is vast.

That community has grown so big that it has started to direct the trends of video games with the survival genre growing extremely quickly recently.

If you are looking for small niches then it mostly comes down to keyword research. Throw random words or ideas into Google Keyword Tool or something like LongTailPro and look for a niche that has a good amount of traffic, yet no obvious authority in the space.

You can think of ideas by looking at anything. I'm sitting at a table, maybe table carving or repurposing old tables into new furniture could be good niches.
