Making $800 a month writing

Hello- I posted a little while back about the best fiverr gigs. Unfortunately the only skill of those listed on the thread that I can honestly tout right now is a good writing ability.

I am working a full time job but need an additional $800 or so a month.

Is it realistic to hope for that much monthly from writing for fiverr, elance etc (building up over the course of a several months)?

Would I be better off starting from scratch learning wordpress, html etc for web design which seems to be a more practical, in-demand skill? Or am I off base and selling article writing, copywriting etc short?

OP here- not hearing from anyone. I see there is a copywriting section of the forum-should I post this there instead?

The copywriting section of the forum, as far as I understand, is more about writing sales letters/ad copy and similar writings. Is that the type of writing that you'd like to do? If so, that section is for you.

If you're looking more towards articles/blog posts, I guess the next best question to ask would be: do you have a portfolio? Would you mind posting a piece here to be reviewed? Your current talent level will go a long way towards deciding your next step (in my opinion).

If you are a good writer and have samples of your work, you could offer your writing services in the "Warriors for Hire" section of this forum.

Do you plan to offer your writing services in a specific niche? There are advantages and disadvantages, of course. But it is something you may want to consider if you haven't thought about already.

You could also search here on the WF for threads where folks are looking for a writing service or someone to write articles for them. Blog commenting is a very good way to generate some business if you put a link to your website or landing page in your signature.

You could also post ads for your writing services on Craigslist.

Just have all your ducks in a row and be prepared to do excellent work for a reasonable price.

    Good luck!

If you SPECIALIZE, you can make that amount and more.

If you don't specialize, online writing jobs can easily be a race to the bottom.

I recommend you write your own materials yourself if you want to make sure your clients are happy.

Remember, you are building an online brand.

You lose control of that brand if you outsource to someone else.

Stop looking for $5 customers. It'll take you forever to get to $800.

What can you specialize in? Email series? Business plans? Web content? White papers?

You can easily make $500+ per ORDER if you have some skill and experience behind you.

Find serious customers, not people who pay $0.001 a word. They're not hard to find.

You can easily clear over $1000 a month part-time just through content mills if you're in the "competent-to-talented" range as a general writer and researcher. Won't be fun work but beats the heck out of Mickey D's or Walmart. You won't really build a portfolio this way, but it can cover the basic bills while you get a portfolio together.

Don't do the $5 articles. Maybe offer a sample of your services for that much at Fiverr. But not entire articles. I see people on there offering 1,000w articles for $5, if they aren't outright plagiarizing them then they have to be batpoop insane. I would shoot myself in the head before I would grind out 10k words every day at that rate.

Warrior Forum doesn't really have a good section for general/article writing discussion that I've seen. Copywriting is a whole different animal and they tend to focus on that over there.

I would say your goal of making $800/month writing at fiverr is quite unrealistic. Think of that, to make $800 you have to complete 200 orders per month which is around 8 orders delivered per day considering you take 1 day rest every week. Even if you take 1 hour to write one article, it will take around 8 hours per day just to write the articles. Now you have to communicate with clients, may have to rewrite some articles which buyers don't like etc. That will also consume your time.

Moreover if you write all the time in front of your PC/laptop whole day, do you think you can have a good social life? I guess not.

I'd suggest you avoid Fiverr. They take 20% of what you earn.

I am a professional writer and I created a marketplace for writers specifically because I was so incensed with writers being ripped off by sites like Fiverr.

So my advice is find anywhere to publicise other than Fiverr.

The reason I mentioned fiverr is that the business comes to you rather than you chasing clients. I am working full time so I don't have the ability to respond to clients on the phone during the day.

I had seen comments about the premium services upsell some fiverrs offer and was hoping that might be an avenue to take.

I don't have a portfolio which is why I was looking at fiverr. Are the other sites like elance etc worth trying then?

Warriors for Hire sounds a bit intimidating for an untested writer like myself. I figured I needed to "get my chops" elsewhere first before taking that route.

How do I get started then? I am willing to put in long hours as long as it brings in monthly income.

        Ah, "Portfolio Paralysis."

        Do you EXUDE competence?

I sell without ever sharing samples. What I write for one client has nothing to do with another. The language, tone, target, hook and gosh knows what else are completely different.

And what if Prospect B doesn't LIKE what you did for Client A?

(It's the same in web design: what one person likes another can hate, so it's totally subjective.)

        You know what works? RESULTS.

Can you provide results? Does the prospect agree? Then you don't have to provide samples.

You know what's really interesting? Truly able clients never need them.

I like what Jason Kanigan said.

Writers are 'ten a penny' and you're just another vendor someone can hire and never hire again.

But then it might take a little bit of that to find out what you're good at and what you can start to specialize in - unless you already have an idea?

Or perhaps you could get work as a ghost writer. They might sell an entire products for (say) $500 for someone who gives them a brief to research and write something for them.

    Just food for thought.

I make $1300-2000 a month from the mills in about 20 hours a week, but you have to be able to write anything and do it quickly. There are very few good mills left, and the better paying ones aren't taking new writers. One of the most popular ones is making everyone start at a lower level and work their way up, but I've seen people go from there to making good money in a matter of months. If you know SEO and can write well, I'd suggest using one of the sites that allows you to build a library and set your own prices. I'm new here, so I don't know about selling on the site, but there are other sites you can sell on as well.

The best thing to do is build your own writer site and promote from there. It's easy to set one up on Weebly. I've done o.k. with mine, and I don't promote it too much.

ETA: My experience with Fiverr is that for writers, once you raise your prices, you lost a lot of your initial customers who are just looking for cheap copy. I left there because of that. There is too much competition for writing services there.

Thanks for the advice-if I use upwork or a similar site do I need a portfolio first? It's that conundrum-how do you get your first paying work without having anything to show first?

Can you use the work you provide on those sites on your own website as sample work?

If you are good in sales letters and sales copies you can make 800 in a day.
if you depend on fiver i highly doubt you can make 800 off 1 gig.

As an untested writer it would be very hard to make that kind of money
writing outside of copywriting. And if you want to do this through writing
sales letters then you have to prove you have what it takes--you need
some results to show from your writing.

With general writing, you have so much competition and prices are low
(two elements that often go together) that $800 per month could be
    a stretch.

Well if the OP has some kind of expertise beyond writing, $100 for a technical blog article, or that much money or more for a short report is well within range.

Join Iwriter. I use them a lot... Most of my articles come from Iwriter, because my English is not that good.

So if you are a good writer Iwriter would be a good place to sell your services.

There are only a few on Fiverr who can earn such amount of money in a month. Go and find a better way to earn 800 bucks.
