Ways to NOT get rich Online

I just found a good post about how to not get rich online... Critiques blogs ebooks and since my plan was to use blog to sell an ebook all along this gave me some food for thought. Here is the main part of it:

I began to think about all the ways people try to get rich quick online. Plenty of how tos and information exists. Rather than write about new methods of earning money, I'll write about what won't make you wealthy.
Blogging
Blogging won't make you rich. What people fail to realize is that blogging is a way to be noticed. It brings opportunities that will make you rich - or at least able to earn a comfortable living.
James and I don't make much money from our blog, despite our monetization strategies. Our advertising, Amazon and ebook revenues barely bring in enough to buy a dinner for four once a month.
But through our blog, we achieve clients. People often contact us because they become familiar with us through our content. They see that we have integrity, that we're trustworthy and that we offer quality - even in free posts.
A blog should never be a sole source of income. It's simply a resource and a tool that helps achieve other revenues.
E-Books
Everyone wants to be an author. So, they grab an idea, write an ebook, put it up for sale and wait to get rich. It should be easy, right?
No. The truth is that e-books involve a big investment with a low return. A good e-book that is researched, well formatted and includes appealing graphics costs a great deal in time. If you're going to do it, do it right and make it look good. There is more involved than writing a few pages in Word and transferring them to PDF.
When we produced our e-book, we spent over $1,000 and probably closer to $1,500 to make sure that we did it right. Expenses, labor costs... add on marketing and all the time involved to build a buzz, and you're looking at a big investment.
Writing a Novel
My roommate believes that just because I'm talented, the novel James and I are co-authoring will be an instant hit. By this time next year, we should be enjoying Bacardi and Cokes on my private yacht somewhere out on the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
Um... No. Any author will tell you that writing a novel won't make you rich. For every JK Rowling, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett, there are thousands of other authors who are probably just as good but whose books never see the light of day.
Sometimes, becoming a bestseller author is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes it's who you know. Sometimes the author hits on an idea in their genre that is fresh enough to capture some publicity.
Almost all of the time, the authors busted their asses and received enough rejection slips to wallpaper their future mansion.
Web Gurus
How many times have you seen sales letters and ads from people who claim to have made it big? Maybe you've even bought into the scheme (these people are always selling something) and tried it for yourself. Tell me: Are you rich?
Probably not. You and every other average Joe want to replicate the success of web gurus using their magical methods. You could follow the guru's advice step by step and still not achieve the same results.
No matter what, there's always one very important ingredient missing from the formula. Just mimicking someone else isn't enough. You have to find your own magical ingredient and have the drive and ambition to make it work.
Starting Your Own Business
Starting your own online business definitely won't make you rich. You'll probably put more time and money into your new business than you ever did working for someone else's business.
You're responsible whether you want to be or not. You have to stay on top of everything. There's no one to tell you to move your ass except yourself (or your partner). You can outsource, but prepare to fork out money before you get to keep some. You can't tell your staff, "My clients didn't pay me yet, so I can't pay you."
You have to hustle to keep the money coming in. Even then, it's a challenge to break even.
You also have to consider start-up costs and all the expenses. Web hosting, subscriptions, equipment and software... Don't forget utility bills, registration fees, income tax... You did save up to pay income tax, didn't you?
Your new venture could actually put you in the poorhouse if you don't plan ahead.
How to Get Rich
By now, you're wondering how you'll ever get rich. I'll tell you in two words: Hard work.
That's it, plain and simple. Any of the above methods for making money have the potential to bring you cash, but you have to recognize that most won't. You also have to recognize opportunities and jump on them with all the gusto and enthusiasm you can muster.

  • Its an opinion and everyone is entitled to one. Quite an interesting perspective given the nature of their website. $1000-1500 to produce a book - wow!

Some are making money and some aren't, some will and some won't. You can say it about any industry though. If we didn't do anything because it was too difficult we'd probably still live like the Flintstone's.

Interesting points to ponder. Yeah, can't make money writing novels. Why just the other day (after someone called me a doofus) I was reading about an obscure British writer who was so poor she was writing her novels on notepads in coffeehouses to save on her heating bills. Think I even remember her name: J. K. Rowling, I believe.

Yep, John Chow, Shoemoney, Carl Ocab, and Copyblogger certainly aren't that rich.

I'd address the entire post, but I don't want to make this too long, so I'll just say that "hard work" does not necessarily pay off. Just look at the general American public. Working hard on the right things will pay off. Smart work will also pay off.

      The site

Men with Pens - WordPress Customization, Website Copywriting and Web Design

serves a different niche entirely than Internet marketing - instead it focuses on the freelancing/blog design/sales/etc. for the non-IM person.

James and Harry have fantastic insights into marketing for those who normally want to shun it (and there's a lot of folks in that category!).

The point of the article (money is made via hard work) is entirely 100% true. All the big-name bloggers/IM folk put in their dues and hours; if you're new to making money online, I personally feel there IS not fast path to riches.

      But long-term success - ah, that's sweet.

LOL you can get rich doing ANYTHING!

My bestfriend is making 6 figures per month sending out
postcards. My cousin just sold his blog for like 5k.

You can make as much money as you dreamed of,
the only thing holding you back is NOT having enough
money, Its NOT having a website, its NOT the product...

It's you! take action thats IT! problem solved. I read somewhere
here that it's not about doing things right. It's doing it period!

Rather it's wrong or right just get it going and take action
and stop wasting time. Taking action is the KEY

The intention to get rich is probably the worst way to try to get rich. It is probably a bad intention for trying to write a novel. And it is the wrong intention for starting a business. People get rich because they offer the market something it wants and they have the talent, brains, and energy to grow the business, with the help of others, of course. No one can do it all alone. As for the super rich...well, that's another story. But hard work? No, I don't think so. Ditch diggers work hard. Lots of people work hard. It takes a good deal more than that, and the mere desire to get rich or the mere fact of hard work are not sufficient explanations; not by a long shot. And let's not forget that there are many wonderful people in every walk of life who are not interested in getting rich. They live for other things.

It seems like you are very cynical about making money online, and just because YOU personally haven't had success online doesn't mean you should start posting up stuff like this telling other people its impossible to get rich online.

Posts like these will shun many newbies away from wanting to make money online. You make it seem like an impossible pipe dream or something.

I do agree with you that it takes plenty of hard work, but those methods you mentioned can make you rich if you DO them right.

I just don't understand where all the unnecessary pessimism comes from in your post.

Re:This thread is a joke, right?

Yep. People love simplistic formulations: "Take massive action!" "Work hard!" Etc., etc. As if these amount to causal explanations. Of course you have to work. Of course you have to use your brains, etc., etc.

This is not My article.. it's a bit different perspective from what most believe. It's beneficial for every newbie to see it and read it and see different perspectives. It's not easy and quick to get rich, while most believe that's how it is.

I find it strange this got so much negativity... Be open minded people.. you disagreeing with it doesn't make it bull****...

  • I think there is plenty of room for money making.

Its just a matter of how much time you put, and how smart you are in your decisions and tactics.

These two things come out to basically mean you must work hard to get to where you want to be.

I have seen many people making lots of money in the eBook niche. And there are people out there who dedicated there time to blog creation and development and make a nice income aswell. Not from having one blog, but having multiple blogs covering mulitple niches.

Although you will make money, and a good amount if you really dig in to your money making plans, I don't think you can get Rich from it. Racking in millions, isn't a real option in blogging, ebook creation, etc...
