The power and percision of using surveys

Just wanted to write a quick comment on how the masses can give you precise feedback. If you set up a survey and gather data and feedback from your visitors you can quickly find out a variety of things like:

How much of your sale letter they're reading
If you're product is over or under priced
errors that you might have missed on your site
the demographics of of your users: age, sex, location, income etc

And the feedback you can really improve your overall operation. I was reminded of this when I seen a clip in a movie based on some law of the masses. The guy got a ton of people to give their guess on the weight of a cow. Out of all these thousands of people all guessed the wrong weight. However, when you averaged out all the guesses it came to the "exact" weight of the cow. Fancy that. There's a real mathematical science behind all that. Definitely could be used to figure out tons of stuff with your site. Oh ya I did a ton of searching and I found a great free poll app and survey app at Bravenet. I'm quite impressed by it.

An easier way might be to use Quantcast.com. For example, I can tell you right now that this site attracts a 64% male audience, and the majority (42%) of users are in the 35-49 age range. 77% have no kids, 45% went to college, and only 18% make $100K or more per year. Interesting...

I use SurveyMonkey, but surveys are not just good for collecting information.

They are also a good method for pre-selling to your customer, i.e. ask them questions about their emotions and what they're lacking, then after the survey has been completed, make them a special offer. The survey can be used to put them in the precise state of mind you're looking for.

    James,

I like your idea. Would be great if you could use
    a similar product to interactivesalesletters.com,
and have the sales letter dynamically change
to reflect what the person filling out the form
input. Then it would be personalized to them
and much more targeted. Better conversion

Yeah, I think i've still got a piece of software called 'Psychic Sales Letter' on my hard drive somewhere which does exactly this.

      Never tested it though... hmm...
