Guerilla Marketing Online vs Traditional Internet Marketing?

I'm really curious as to why so many people suggest traditional internet marketing tactics over Guerilla Marketing tactics?

Examples of guerrilla marketing:

• Launching an epic content marketing campaign
• Driving traffic and sales from email lists and JV alliances
• Creating viral marketing campaigns (the bucket challenge!)

Examples of traditional internet marketing:

• SEO (link building etc.)
• Media buys (pay-per-click etc.)
• Blog commenting, cold-calling, and so on.

I see these recommendations all the time here on the forum and everywhere else online, but when I look at people who are crushing it online, I don't see them commenting on blogs, building keyword lists or spending thousands of dollars on pay-per-click ads.

I see them launching new products almost every month and using multiple email lists to drive sales of the new product. Then affiliates jump on board and drive sales higher. While all this is happening, a new email list is being built where the whole process can be duplicated.

So basically, these experts don't even care about SEO, link building, social groups etc., because they're constantly building their lists from the products they sell every month. And when they do focus on Facebook or Twitter etc., most of its outsourced or automated somehow.

Maybe THIS is part of the reason why so many people struggle online. They haven't developed the skills to do these things or they never heard of them before?

Maybe it's time to focus less on the noise being published online, and time to look REALLY CLOSE as to what's going on behind the curtains?

What do YOU think?

Or they haven't been in the game long enough. Do you think large lists and JV relationships happen over night?

Because your 'guerilla' tactics takes months and years to perfect. It's not something you can just 'do'.

I love how IMers often say 'post viral content' or 'create stuff that goes viral'. The 'viral' factor is completely out of your control.

You can systemize an 'epic content' campaign

      To some degree, yes!

But I remember a thread here recently talking about The Rich Jerk's comeback, and that thread went viral, so I'm thinking the Rich Jerk had some idea this would happen if he announced something BIG was going to happen.

But you're right, it takes time to accomplish something on this level.

The Rich Jerk probably did not plan that a WF post would get popular. That's just PR what he did. Whether or not it went viral was largely out of his control and most likely out of sight and out of mind.

When w .create a launch style email campaign for example, we are attempting to get buzz, not for a single element to go viral.

'Going viral' is a popular unattainable fad IMers have seem to put a liking to. In my opinion. I just don't buy it.

These (above) are much more applicable strategies for the product creator

    Examples of traditional internet marketing:

    • SEO (link building etc.)
    • Media buys (pay-per-click etc.)
    • Blog commenting, cold-calling, and so on.
This second group of strategies can also be used by product creators... but are much more applicable for affiliate marketers.

My guess is that less than 5% of the members here on the WF are product creators. That's just a guess, but I guarantee you that is is a very small fraction, and... probably less than 2% of those product creators have ever created more than one product.

Assuming the product creator uses affiliate marketers to promote his/her product, they will benefit from those affiliates' traffic strategies (that second group), without ever having to actually do any of them for themselves.
