How to analyse business on a competitors site?

Hi,
I'm looking at the viability of a business idea.

Someone else is already doing what I plan to do.

Id like to try and figure out if if theeyre making money and how much.

I'm sure I won't be able to do this precisely but if I can see how much traffic he has and maybe how much traffic on the checkout page

Is there a tool to analyse his traffic?

Any other ways of figuring out how much money he might be making?

You'd get a far more accurate look at what you're aiming for by analyzing the market rather than a competitor.

You don't know how effective your competitor is at reaching their target audience. Somebody could be unprofitable selling X product, another company could sell the product far more effectively and pull millions in profit per year.

You could always check Alexa (not very accurate) and Google's Keyword Planner to discover a few metrics but traffic doesn't really help you much either unless you know the conversion rate of the product.

There really is no certain way to find out how much someone is making unless they straight out tell you.

Why not go undercover, send him an e-mail posing a student of some sort, sneakily add in questions about his business and so on. Say it's for your University project.

I usually check keyword search numbers and other factors to understand the need of people for a specific product or service.. If it`s something people are looking for, then it doesn`t matter how much someone is making, it means I can be making money too.

Alexa rank could give you a clue. But remember that no online tool can give you an exact number of visits (unless is Alexa certified metrics). Also don't trust those websites that tell you how much your site is worth. Most of the times they throw a very high number and in reality the site is just valued at $20 at most.

    It depends on your budget.

If you want to take the free route:

    1. Plop the site into SimilarWeb.com
    2. Looking at on-site monetizations, find their offer payout rates on OfferVault.com

You then need to guess about:

    1. How much traffic they send to offers.
    2. Their average EPC

You can make fairly astute guesses, but I'd have to see their website to give you a better idea.

Simply looking at Similar Web data, including any ad expenditure, will give you a decent idea of viability.

Okey, so the first tool you would need to give a try is spyfu, then moz, then similarweb. Most of these cost you some money, but hey, you can always get a refund before the first month ends, because they give you a 30-day-money-back-guarantee. Spyfu will definitely help you

    Check out their target keywords

Figure out the CPC rate for their target keywords.

This should be a good starting point for revenue estimates.

Of course, you should also try to figure out their PROBABLE traffic using tools like Alexa.com site info

You can search their keywords to get a good idea of how much of an online presence they have...

Their Alexa rank as someone has already mentioned to see how much world-wide traffic they are receiving to their site.

How much are they charging for their services? How long have they been in business?

Are they spending a lot of money on advertising? Pricey solo ads, and tuff like that...becuase if they are advertising a lot then they must be making enough to even justify that kind of spending.

I like to check websites at Scamadviser which provides me some of the basics of that website owner as well.

There is no tool that can let you know how much traffic your specific competitor on a particular page is getting. But you can of course get general hints and clues.
Instead of relying so much on what your competitor is earning, focus more on what you can earn from this business.

I had just read this this a couple days ago. It lists 21 tools you can use to see what places someone is generating traffic from (paid & organic). However - determining their income would be a wild guess.
