Many Kindle forum authors are complaining about lower income due to the new KU terms

Too many focus on maximizing downloads.

That's why erotica used to make so much money. Not anymore.

Now, the focus is on quality but... I'd like to add... YOU HAVE TO STRUCTURE your book the RIGHT WAY

Sure, formatting the book to make it look 'longer' can work but what truly works is

    1) Overall quality AND
    2) Structuring and writing the book so that the reader keeps pushing forward

Also, include calls to action into your book so they can sign up to your notification list.

About a half a cent per page (~250 words) from Kindle Unlimited reads.

Considering most of my books are less than 80 pages, it is a huge huge paycut from what it used to be before their update.

The only reason I keep some of my books in KDP Select is that the KU downloads count as a sale in terms of sales ranking, so it helps sell more actual copies of the books.

I don't think there is an exact number. I try to limit overt calls to join my list to somewhere in the first 10% of the book (so it shows on the "Look Inside" preview and downloadable sample) and at the end.

I'll also add specific calls if they add value to the book (like links to free downloads, videos, etc.)

Put too many overt "buy my stuff" pitches in your book and, while you may not get banned, reviewers will crucify you.

You can't turn your book into a SPAMTASTIC piece of trash by adding BLATANT / OBVIOUS 'join my list' calls to action at every chapter. Two should be enough if you structure and write your book properly.

First, the only OBVIOUS calls to action to join your list should be at the FIRST PAGE or SECOND PAGE (if you're using the COVER PAGE trick) The second mention of your list call to action should be at your conclusion.

What happens in the middle? There are other 'calls to action' involved BUT... they are never blatant. And they don't involve your list. Instead, they focus on the EMOTIONAL STATE of the reader.

Set an emotional tone for the reader so the reader is MOTIVATED to keep reading.

I specialize in a range of non-fiction niches. I set up my chapters to talk about a particular point and I get the reader emotionally engaged to want to read the next chapter. FEAR is a good motivator for certain topics at key parts of a book. GREED or appealing to a sense of CURIOSITY/MYSTERY are also good in the right context.

In this situation, your 'call to action' to get them to keep reading since you're not getting paid per download but for pages READ.

Amazon has two ways for people to check out your book before buying. On the sales page itself, there's the "Look Inside" feature, which allows you to preview the first ~10% of the book. They also have an option to download a sample of the ebook with the same ~10%.

The "trick" is to put an offer (usually a bonus or resource page) within that first 10%. The obvious place to put it is on the page right after the cover image.

Thank you for purchasing [book title]. Make sure you download your bonus materials here:

[link to squeeze page, customized for the book]

Just enter your email, and we'll send you the link and put you on our update list so you'll know when we release new books and when they are free or discounted.

          Thanks again...

That's the more obvious 'trick'. I've been using a tweak of this approach that solves the problem of 'passive' mailing list sign up links.

The key is to offer some sort of obvious value that stands on its own but is greatly enhanced if the reader reads the whole book.

Amazon's changes to the KU system has really unlocked a lot of people's creativity to get readers to read more.

Good idea. Thanks, @writeaway. Now all I have to do is be creative enough to produce something I can give away that compels the reader to read the book. I'm working on it.

Put a Link in your Introduction that says something like : Want to learn more about this subject? Click HERE ....

Then redirect them in your conclusion and say something like : Click HERE to get more information about this subject for FREE.

re-direct them to your e-mail list.

By doing this, with one click in your introduction, ALL the pages in your kindle book will be read automatically.

Yes I know, this is a grey Area, but Amazon allows it for now and most people don't feel bad about doing it because most people are mad about the new per page system.

                  Wait, seriously?

From what I've heard Amazon measures how long each individual page is read to weed out people flipping through. I know there are people selling Kindle Unlimted reading services that have people use software to manually flip through the pages, but I have never heard of this.

Does that mean people jumping to a late chapter by clicking a link in the table of contents also counts all previous pages as read?

That's huge if it's true, can't imagine Amazon not fixing that soon.

I downloaded a free Kindle book last week - and this thread explains what might have been going on.

The author prefaced the book with 6 "summaries" of other books in the series...BEFORE you got to the page where this book began.

It didn't make sense to me - and I didn't like it so deleted the entire book without reading it. Each summary was pages long and though I didn't know WHAT the trick was - I felt there was some sort of "trick" involved.

The actual process has been explained already so I won't repeat it.

To add to the discussion though I have found that for long term success you are far better at placing your invitation to join your list at the end of the book.

On a psychological level the people who sign up have already bought into your presentation, ideals, values and methodology. They are essentially pre sold on you - which is another reason to write the book yourself.

You might have fewer sign ups but the amount of money you make and the value of the customer is much higher.

Another reason I try and avoid 'the cover page trick' is I want you to buy my or my clients book.

With regard KU I support Amazon lower payouts although upsetting will hopefully lead to less garbage and the less garbage on their the better it is for real authors, produces, publication houses and most important the better it is for the customer.

Only put your call to action in the front and back matter of your books.
Anything more than this and you will piss your readers off.
They will write bad one star reviews about you putting hyperlinks all over your books.
They may even go as far as reporting you to Amazon for being a spammer.
And you definitely don't want Amazon pulling your books off their shelves right?

Yeah, it takes somebody reading 270 pages of a book to make what we used to for a borrow. It's kind of ridiculous and the vast majority of Kindle publishers took a huge hit, myself included.

It's too bad, but another reminder why we can't rely on other companies to sell our products...

the last 3 KU payouts were .0003c per page - not even close to a half cent, but rather only a fraction of a faction of a half cent

what does that pay per book?

assuming you just did a 50,000 word NaNoWriMo book for November, here's what your KU payout would look like:

KU assumes 311 words per page, so, no matter what your actual page count is, you're 50k word book, counts as 160 pages

Now someone downloads your book which Amazon has decided they will pay .0003c per 311 words (per page ACTUALLY READ - not per download)

.0003 x 160 = .048c - yep - Amazon is going to pay you HALF CENT for the ENTIRE BOOK not per page

The average reader only reads 1/3 way through before abandoning a book, meaning that MOST downloads will pay you for 53 pages not the full 160 pages.

Meaning that for MOST downloads, you'll get:

    .0003 x 53 = .0159 - way less then a 1/4 of a penny

Last month one of my books was downloaded and read to the tune of 588 pages read and Amazon paid me $1.76 which means they paid .0003c per page read.

    ---------

And if you ask me why my books are still in KU even after the pay drop? The books I had in KU were in Select BEFORE the KU program started.

Select has a free download program, allowing me to offer my paid book for free for 5 days out of every 90 days. They've had this for years, and I have enough books on Kindle so that I am able to offer a free book for my readers - EVERY DAY of the year.

These are "loss leaders" I write a lot of series and sets, most with 10, 12, or more volumes. I have 1 series with 231 volumes and another with 130 volumes. In my sets, I offer the first 3 to 5 volumes of the set in the KU program, allowing readers to read the first few volumes for free. If they like the series they buy the rest of the books in the set, if not, they've gotten free books and I've not lost anything.

With KU, I make a few pennies on a book that I could have made ZERO on in the old Select.

free Downloads in Select are still free and you make no money on them AT ALL; only if they are downloaded through KU AND are read, do they earn you money per page read.

    -----------

Before June 2015, Amazon paid a % royalty if a reader downloaded and read 10% of your book (thus why Amazon was flooded with 10 page Erotica books or a while)

Between June 2014 and June 2015, you could make $10,000k a week, just by having 10 Erotica books at 10 pages each book (just 3,110 words, because Amazon figures 311 words per page.)

Since July 2015, those same 10 page Erotica books bring in a meager fraction of a penny per book, per month.

In June 2015 there were 70,000 Gay Erotica Short Reads (books under 10,000 words long) n the KU Program; I just checked right now - there are 1,934 of those 70,000 still in KU because the authors are losing money on borrows and are now trying to convince readers to pay $2.99 for 10 pages - and finding that few readers are willing to pay .99c for 100 pages let alone $2.99 for 10.

The hey days of Erotica millionaires on Kindle is over and it only lasted 10 months before Amazon cracked down on that loophole scam.

    -----

I've been self-publishing on Amazon for years (since 2010) and been an author for decades (started publishing in 1978). I write both fiction and non-fiction. I've seen get rich quick schemes and scams come and go. The best advice I can give you making money with writing is this:

Write what interests you, write what you enjoy writing about, write the books YOU would want to read and be willing to pay money for, and when you get done writing that...

Write what interests you, write what you enjoy writing about, write the books YOU would want to read and be willing to pay money for, and when you get done writing that...

Write what interests you, write what you enjoy writing about, write the books YOU would want to read and be willing to pay money for, and when you get done writing that...

Write, publish, repeat, write, publish, repeat, have fun writing what you love, write, publish, repeat, write, publish, repeat, write, publish, repeat, have fun writing what you love, write, publish, repeat. There really is no other way to make money as a writer, then to just keep writing and getting your work out there.

For the most part ignore the fads. Sure they can make you a lot of money fast for a short time, but fads fade quick and then you have to go back to the nose to the grindstone. KU was a fad - it lasted 10 months before it crashed.

If you can ride the wave in the early days and jump off before they crash, fads can be a good long term income, provided you are able to change quickly to write to match the fad.

Take the 50 Shades Rip Off Fad - It's held strong 3 years. If you can write quasi-BDSM-like Erotic Romance, you can MAYBE make a good living. Unfortunately, as with all fads, tens of thousands of 50 Shades Rip Off books are out there and only a handful are bringing in a good income for the authors.

For a while vampires were in an you could make a good living on them - now they are out. Before vampires it was wizards. Before wizards it was Charmed style witch sister, before that it was Buffy style slayers.

If you are a versatile author who can switch to match the fads, you could have a good income.

NonFiction is the same way, fads come and go.

Now me? Fads don't work for me, because I just can't get interested in the fad enough to write about it. I like Elves, wizards, and unicorns, so that's what I write. When LoTRs was big, sales went up, but now that fad is over and sales are back to normal. Does that stop me from writing about Elves, wizards, and unicorns? Nope. Why? Because I am writing what I enjoy, and I enjoy it enough to just write a lot f it and be publishing a new book every month or so. For me that system works.

In short - find the writing method and genre that works for you and focus on that method/genre, and don't rely on OTHERS (like KU) Amazon's Kindle Unlimited (KU) was good while it lasted, but those Erotica authors who put all their eggs in one basket, have had their income pulled out from under them and crashed hard. It's a lesson all writers need to learn: don't rely on the get rich quick methods in the writing career - they all crash, and they always crash hard.

The lesson we can learn from KU? Just write what you want to write because you want to write it and in the end, you'll still be earning money long after the get-rich-quickers have fallen by the wayside.

      There is another approach though.....

      WRITE TO SELL BOOKS

Too many Kindle authors write to game KU. As Eelkat and James McAllister pointed out, whatever the payout per page is, KU is a RACE to the BOTTOM.

      write to sell books.

Make each book sell future books.

      Build an author brand.

A client of mine that banks six figures off Kindle even AFTER the KU changes focuses on SELLING AS MUCH BOOKS as possible. It's all about BRANDING.

Kindle still produces PASSIVE INCOME but the focus is less on VOLUME and more on BRANDING.

For many people KU 1.0 was a gold mine. You were able to make quick & easy money - the dream of everyone. But if you're an experienced entrepreneur you knew that such "methods" aren't working forever.

So a friend of mine published hundreds of fiction books with only 10 pages and made a lot of money between June 2014 and June 2015. I believe that he made about $250k within this time.

I was very envious about his income but I've focused on fiction books with 15 and 30k words and published about 100 books within 12 months.

Since KU 2.0 my friends income is burned. His whole "work" is dead. His "business structure" (cover designer, authors, proofreaders) is completely senseless now. He has to start from zero. And yes, now he has $250k in his backhand but he has never learned how to manage so much money (how to invest etc.) He also has no business mindset (how to deal with your customers etc.) I bet that he's looking for the next quick and easy method instead of building up a stable business.

The new system has also hurt my income but it's nothing to worry about for me. I've spread the risk with short books and longer books, fiction and non fiction, high quality and very high quality etc. and I'm still making $8k/m. So I'm fine and I know that I'm able to increase my income month by month. And I also know that I'll make my 100k next year again without problems. I can keep on with my business structure like before.

Conclusion is: Don't focus on the quick and easy methods even if other people have success with this methods!!! They'll get what they earn (= nothing) faster than you think. You have to develop your personality, build up a business with strong brands and keep on working day by day. And don't focus on the money - focus on the customers. Your income is just the mirror of how much value you provide. Consistency is the key to get rich!

      Well Damnnn.
I know many authors had talked about making a kill with short stories using KU 1.0.
But no on had shared actually numbers.
      $250, 000.00 in a year.
Well no wonder many of then were crying once Amazon announced the structure of the new KU 2.0.
Tell you friend to bundle up his short stories.
That is what the authors of real short works are doing now to keep up with KU 2.0.
If he built an e-mail list during KU 1.0, then his recovery should not take forever.
I know switching to longer books for some authors is work.
But hey no one said or promised that work is not involved in self-publishing.
If your friend is willing, then you should show him what you are doing and hopefully he can start the journey of bringing his income back up.
All the best to the both of you.

      Best Regards,
      Shana Jahsinta Walters.

Since KU 2.0 began in July, the pay-out has been roughly .5 cents per page read, though the trend is down.

The change from paying one set amount for any download read 10+% to the present per page system has hurt people who produced a zillion tiny books but has enormously benefited writers who write 1. Novels 2. With strong stories that keep readers interested and emotionally involved so they can't stop until the end. 3. And write lots of them.

Children's book writers are at a disadvantage because those run short just because of the audience.

I have novels Amazon says are over 400 pages. So, if someone reads the entire book, I get roughly $2, which is what I get for a sale, so I'm glad somebody is trying me out for no cost to themselves. KU may be cannibalizing sales for well-known authors, but increasing revenue for lesser-known authors.

I echo the advice to put a link to your email signup form only in the front and back.

Myself, I'm skeptical of the front one, and don't use it. Why do I want somebody to join my list if they only browsed a book on Amazon? Or if they didn't finish reading it? So I just put it at the end.

I've seen assertions that Kindle will penalize the rankings of books that have links to other sites besides Amazon. I think one link to my mailing list is worth it. And affiliate links (even Amazon ones) are strictly a no-no.

    thank you
Amazon has a good plan that makes you schedule the timeline and the price of the ebooks that you sell through their website. There are those times when the book is alwasy available for $0.00 and people get to download it more and more. One trick you need to know when it comes to kindle is when the number of downloads are good, the traffic to the book is always improved and the sales do increase. So just be creative and let people download your ebook as much as they can.

It use to be half a penny. They are paying even less now. Oh yes, and demanding more. Like that should not surprise us. Sadly, to create a good high quality children's book, I have to hire top caliber artists to create the pictures and spend on marketing a lot of money. KU just killed this amazing genre. Hey, we thank you amazon. Please keep working on becoming the world's worst company. Wall mart has nothing on you.

It used to be ~ $2 in 2013 then it dropped to $1.5 in 2014 and it eventually got to $1.35 (last months) of 2015. On 1st July 2015, they shifted to pay per page. It's great for fiction, a pain for non-fiction authors.
