When is a website unrecoverable?

Hi Guys,

So strange question. I have a website that is quite a few years old. At it's peak it's gotten maybe 500UVs per day. But in the last two years I can't even hit 50UVs per day.

I did stop posting on it for a long time. The numbers held and I'm guessing one of Google's changes effected it. It's almost all original content say for the videos I've re-posted from Youtube. It has a FB page of over 1000 LIKES but they're not very responsive users. I had began to write new, fresh, content on it to no avail.

I remember hearing a while back about the idea that sometimes a website can't be reignited (perhaps without putting money into marketing). So... what do you guys think? Can something happen to rank, SERPs, whatever, that search engines and readers simply turn a blind eye to it?

Or do you think any website can be recovered?

Any insight, stories, comments, are very welcomed here.

edit:
I'm considering grabbing a new domain and starting from scratch. But if I can save this one that would be great.
