Hi all first post of many i hope.

So a bit of background, i currently work full time and study IT part time and for the last few months i've been thinking about building some sort of internet marketing business on the side. Not expecting to make millions but a steady income stream would be nice.

So as part of a college project i have to build a website and do the full Seo on it and get it up the google rankings using content and social media. So i'm thinking why not try and build some sort of affiliate website that could potentially make me some money on the side. So ideas i'm playing around with are Clickbank or Wealth Affiliate, not so sure if i'd have time to write an ebook that i could sell in the given time frame but that is something i could look into in the future.

Topics i'm thinking of Healthy Living type of things....lose weight, gain weight, how to cure lactose intolerance, maybe a new you type of thing. Or maybe meditation, boost confidence, boost cycling, or running performance. all things i'd be interested in and would know about.

Anyone any tips or help, does it sound like i'm going in the right direction ? Also thinking longer term of building websites and doing Seo for people, but right now i need to get my college project up and running, oh has to be live by December, so again and tips or hints greatly appreciated.

Do it to it. You probably won't have many rankings in the niches you've laid out by December, but you could have a solid site well on the way to earning a nice side income. You're headed in the right direction.

Working on the site, and building backlinks are the only way to achieve what you want, though. No amount of studying beats hands on.

My advice based on years of building businesses online...

    1. You may only have part-time to allocate to your business, but think BIG...don't think I *may* start something *part-time* as a *college* program *that you don't expect millions...* Change the thought process to think BIG and find your passion and urgency around making your business successful...even if you start executing in a limited window. In my experience nothing great ever happens by *maybe* doing something

    2. Dig into "Healthy Living" and find out what is selling (helps you find or create products that will sell) and WHY they are selling - what is the emotional want or desire behind them wanting that product (this becomes critical to your branding and marketing, website copy ,etc)

    3. Why You? What will you bring to the market that will allow you to eclipse much of your competition? Will you reach your audience in new ways (video for example, when others rely on SEO)? Do you have specialized knowledge or a desire to get specialized knowledge around SEO - if not, likely not a good thing to mess around with in these markets - you gotta be serious. Maybe you see an opportunity for licensing your own product or developing your own info product business - and you will differentiate within your product marketing or by securing top affiliates to resell your product.

If you can answer these 3 questions - you'll have a running start my friend.

  • It's all about learning and testing. What you learn from the college project would help you a lot. Learn and test and never quit.. you'r on the right direction. keep it up

That sounds like a great idea. Take some time to research your market. Learn what they want. Their pains, desires, and needs. Learn the way they speak so you communicate with them better.

A good way to start is in forums. In Google search: yourniche +forum

Then find a matching affiliate product.

Building a site is easy. Getting results with SEO may take sometime.

Well thanks very much for all the nice helpful replies great to hear i'm at least thinking along the right lines, just a matter of learning how to do it all now in a way that's profitable.

      @jbsmith and @RamonAbreu

Are there any sites or links where i could drill down and see what sells and why it sells. Tried Google keyword tool but it doesn't seem to work anymore, maybe there are alternatives but i have to pay ?

Thinking now if i could find a good niche maybe knock up an ebook over a few days then start building the site around it. Thinking of checking out Clickbank to see what sells there and maybe find why.

Again thanks to everyone that replied, a bit blown away by how helpful everyone is here

    Hello Billy and Welcome

It would be advisable to chisel those Markets down into defined Niches. There a re plenty of sub topics within those that will make your efforts more targeted and eventually more profitable

Health niche is way competitive. You should start building social accounts now so you can drive traffic later on. Don't expect organic traffic from google, unless you plan on targetting long tail key words.

    Good luck.

I think you should, like you said, start with affiliate marketing. But paid traffic should be your way to go, but don't fail to build a quality list of targeted subscribers in your desired niche.

That's gonna be your ATM. Whenever you need money, just find a good and high converting product and BOOM! the money rolls in.

But don't spam them, and always provide VALUE alongside your promotional emails.

Think it's an awesome idea to kill two birds with one stone.

I think Robert is right, to try to drill down and find yourself a more specific niche. I also think you shouldn't spend too much time thinking and focus more on making sure it's a good niche and cracking on with the work. The primary goal is your college thang. Money and experience making money (... and learning those skills is secondary right now... although a very sexy proposition!)

Just remember the big picture and that is leverage.

SEO is a nice thing and all and can be very powerful but as far as a Internet marketing business understand that seo is just a traffic strategy that can take weeks, months and years to really benefit from and can disappear overnight.

    The your business is gone.

It all comes down to supply and demand. Finding your product to serve the marketplace and present in a manor in which people would be glad to buy it! Thats called optimization to get that part straight.

You have your product then you need to get traffic to your sales page and then convert that traffic.

    Traffic + Conversions = Money

Biggest thing I see new people who don't really understand yet is jumping around from one project to the next when you don't see results the first couple of days. Before you even start something give it some strong thought on do I and am I going to stick with this for at least 12 months and then make a decision that you are and nothing is going to stop you or get in your way like other shiny objects!

Making money online so freaking easy once you understand. Again its supply and demand. Go out and find a good product that has been in the marketplace for a little while and continues to do well and then separate yourself from your competition by creating your own website/funnel and send some traffic. Convert that traffic and optimize until you are converting and generating leads. At that point your leads to to convert to a buying customers.

I like this niche idea, but I wouldn't use the word "cure" - especially for sensitive people who are really going through this, and may *believe* your cure claim. If the niche exists, give them some high quality information that will really benefit their lives. And don't stress out too much about your project. You strike me as an intelligent individual. You'll be just fine in college and in life if you just follow the right ideas, and also take action. Good luck!

Thanks for this Randall but i'm just wondering about getting enough content together for something like lactose intolerence, like not so sure getting 10 emails or blog posts without repeating the same thing a different way is possible or am i just naive ?

You don't want to keep going over and over how to solve the problem. There are many, many associated problems, feelings, emotions and solutions for each niche.
Like it was recommended above, go do some keyword research in the Google Keyword Planner, that will tell you what "other" things people are searching for in your chosen niche.
Say the Keyword Planner returns 689 different keywords. Now you have 689 different article ideas right there.

    Here's how I'd do it

    1) Use crowdsourcing to determine NEED

    2) Use Social media signals to verify the NEED you detect

    3) Use Q+A sites to get AS MANY RELATED questions to the need you're addressing

    4) Fill out the content in bursts

    5) Post excerpts on social media and create derivatives like PPT, PDF, and images

    6) Replicate the distribution channels of similar content

      Couple of questions.

Say i set up a site for whatever niche i find, how do i go about finding whether there is a demand for the niche and what keywords to use.

and.......feeling a bit stupid asking this but have to start somewhere....

say i sell some clickbank product on my page i'm guessing all i'm doing is putting a link to that product on my page ? oh and one more question

converting vistors into sales, would gathering an email list and then selling through email be better than trying to sell direct on a site ?

and getting traffic to the site just post articles on facebook twitter etc linked to the product ?

again sorry for the stupid questions in advance !

      Thanks

As far as searching for good keywords you can start by using the Google Keyword Planner, that's Google's free tool to analyze keywords searched on Google.

For the Clickbank question, yes, you just put your affiliate link. Although I wouldn't recommend just placing the link there, make it a button they can click through.

For a long term asset you should definitely build a list, but you can have offers directly on your site too at the same time

Honestly, your best bet is to dive in and see what works for you! It sounds like you have a good starting plan. 99% of success is just going out there and doing it, too many people spend too much time sitting around and thinking (not that this isn't important as well), but you need to get out there are take action!!

best of luck and keep us updated!!
