Is freelance writing still popular

I was always interested in doing freelance writing, however, I have always known it to be a tough market to break into. I have looked into elance, I writer, and a few others but it all seems very hard to break into. Anyone here in to freelance writing? Are you able to go full time with this?

Thanks

I think the real question here is what's the best way to market your writings?

Obviously, you can set any perceived value you want on your writing abilities, but the big key factors in writing for the web is understanding your chosen market?

I mean if you're cool with cranking out 500 word articles for $2 a piece, then you can get more work then you could probably handle, assuming you can meet a buyers expectations.

However, if by freelance you mean blogging, guest blogging, syndicating your content, writing copy, or sales based web copy with SEO, email swipes, or creating digital products...

There's really no limit, if you have the juice!

Personally, I do not sell my writing's, in fact, many are being filed away as part of a much bigger project I am working on.

So though I cannot directly answer the "How you want to use your craft?" -or- "What your writing's will return in cash value?"...

The short answer: There is money in writing!

Here's the best advice I can give you.

In fact, I wish somebody gave me this advice when I was just starting out.

    The advice?

    SPECIALIZE

The more you specialize, the more money you make, the less hours you put in, and you'll be happier.

    Anything else is a ....

    RACE TO THE BOTTOM.

Take it from me or learn it the hard way.

    Your choice.

I have been a writer/editor/proofreader for 6 years so far and I earn regular money.
Defining what "full time" means to you will help us tell you if it is sufficient. I can only do it part time due to health issues but I believe I have a successful business so far.

One key here is not to expect big dollars early on. You need time, a website and a portfolio of samples to help you attract business.

I joined a couple of bidding sites. The best one no longer exists. My first ever job was 30 articles for one lady. 6 years later, I still have her as a client. I think it took about 1 -2 years to have enough confidence in earning roughly the same money each month.

You can check out freelance sites like Upwork too. They have a writing category. You may be able to find some work that way.

Dana makes a good point too. Upwork is undergoing major changes as they have bought out other sites and are in the process of migrating them across...Elance is one such site. But you have to separate the good from the mediocre work. Sure, you'll find lots of work if you accept $1 or $5 per article.
Set your prices realistically and that's a figure you have to determine for yourself.

I think that freelance writing is still popular. There are many sites that you can post your "gigs" or work on. If you are writing High Quality Content or Reviews you should find some easy work to make some money. Many people want HQ Content/Reviews but they pay for Low Quality Content/Reviews, so if you are buying please check these peoples work, feedback, and they understand what you want before buying.

Yes freelancing is still popular but thats not the real question, at least i don't think it is. The real question is can you make money from it? There are few factors here, are you any good? How will you market yourself, (freelance sites like upwork, fivver and freelancr are good) What will be your speciality.
I hire writers all the time, although I consider myself an alright writer when it comes to sales Excellent is better I am willing to pay thousands of dollars for an excellent copywriter.

Freelance writing is still hot. Do it, but learn how to market your services. You probably won't make millions overnight, but........ I won't rule it out. Check out a course called "How To Market Your Way To A Million Dollar Professional Services Practice" by Bob Serling.

All I know is that I still hire freelance writers.

I also have 2 people in the office that write full time for me and manage several freelancers.

So i think there is still room for freelance writers, but they have to be good. The time that just anybody can be a writer is over.

There will always be a demand for content. What you get paid will depend on how and where you market your skills. As a couple of posters have said earlier, specializing is especially lucrative. Good copywriters are paid especially well. Check out Ray Edwards stuff.

If you are a skilled writer, DO NOT fall into the trap of working for pennies. It may pay the bills, but it's easy to get sucked into an endless cycle. A good site to check out if you want to command the best rates for your writing is MakeaLivingWriting.com. There are many others.

If you're truly serious about freelance writing, set your business up properly from the outset and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches and worry.

  • I would say the most preferred job online is freelance writing. Before getting into IM, people do start from there. If you are well determined, you can start off well.

Try on freelancing site like freelancer.com and you can get into some real good projects. Make sure that you keep your bid low(Not extremely as people doubt the quality) and submit a good proposal with every bid to make it count.

Make sure to mention something about the project particularly which can draw some attention.

I've been a freelance writer for 11 years, and I've been doing it full time for seven. It's definitely doable, but you need to target the right clients. Elance has an occasional gem, but it's mostly a place for low-paying work that isn't going to help you improve your skills or get any better at what you do. My best clients are professional service providers (doctors, lawyers, dentists) and marketing agencies that cater to professional service providers. If you have specialized knowledge/skills, you can definitely use them to make a good living.

The writing profession is getting popular day by day and the freelancer for writing are increasing daily but the fact is that the professional freelancers for writing are very few this is becuase some new freelancers for writing just copy paste the material from the sites and change a bit in their writing style and present it to you by saying that this is there work which is actually not.. that's why the freelancer who is profesional and who has the degree of writing is searching the job of writing but the others who just copy paste are earning more than enough.... There is one reason also for their downfall and that is the freelancer for writing from the india and Philipines and made t easier.. they can write 10 articles of 1000 words just in 10$ ..... This is ridiculus.. I mean 10 articles for just 10$... You require time and strength and knowledge for writing and they have decreased the rate of the other professionals.. That's why the writing the original writing is going on downfall.... Many will agree with me and many will dis agree... but this is the fake truth which we are facing now a days and don't know till when we all writing freelancers had to face.....

You can always write a book and publish it on Kindle, then use it as reference when you contact potential clients. Make sure it's well written and long enough it doesn't look like the usual ripoff cut and paste job done by so many outsourcers.

It's not as hard when you look away from online sources. If you know the economics behind bidding sites, you'd never look to them as an option. Sure, there are exceptions. There always are. Still, for best odds to succeed? Look away from online sources and you'll see a whole new world open up. One that's not nearly as competitive and it pays more.

You have been given some excellent advice here. One especially important gem, is never fall into the trap of working for peanuts, even in the beginning. There will always be cheapskates out there looking for writers prepared to undervalue themselves just to get work, but they never turn out to be long term prospects. Immediately you try to raise your prices to a more realistic level they will be gone.

If you are a good writer have faith in yourself and charge accordingly. You won't get hired by the $5 for 500 words brigade, but those aren't the assignments you're looking for.

Consider specializing in writing for one or two niches. Research and find the top websites publishing in those niches; send them some top-notch sample material and ask them to consider you as one of their writers.

Create your own website loaded with more good samples of your work and include a link to it in all your inquiries.

Also, as already suggested Freelance Writing Riches offers some great advice for freelance writers. Maggie Linders knows her stuff . . .

        Words run the show.

An' now we got the internet, they run it faster, instanter, an' panoramicallier.

So if ur writin', fix the brute facts in your crosshairs an' take aim, or you will write drivel for idiots an' starve.
