How do you like the idea of Questionnaire type Wizards that get you what you want?

Hello,

I am looking at the feasibility of using questionnaire type things that get people the product they are looking for. I believe it is used by comparison sites.

Do you like these kinds of things? Do you think that they are a good way to get customers what they want?

    I personally hate them, but then again I am pretty good with the search engines.

    But, if you go that route, you should focus on getting people the information they want and not products. Unless, they are tangible products and not digital products

      From what perspective do you suggest this? Are you suggesting getting people informational products that have a price attached to them?

      I think their question is about marketing and making money online so the idea is to get the customer the product that they want. If you hate the questions bit then what would you suggest otherwise (other than using the search engine)?

        I am not saying that the question type strategy will not work, I just do not like it myself.

        People come on line looking for information and not products and if all you do is send people to products without providing any valuable information you will lose people for good.

        What I am saying is to provide good actionable information that leads to a good product.

        Example; Someone is looking to lose weight after having a baby and all you do is send them to a diet product, they have not received the information they are looking for. On the other hand, you send them to an article that has some actionable information as well as a free report to grab their email address, then you have someone on your list to promote and cross promote products to. Remember from this example. The person wants to lose weight after having a baby, so you could also promote baby products or parenting products.

          Thank you for both answers. I was about to say that people also look for the products as well (like Ebay) but I think you meant that as well. I think you are coming at this from the perspective that part of the process of getting a product is to get the info first.

          I agree that sites should focus around information. I was thinking of incorporating some kind of system to allow the user to get the product of their choice using an application. That application would be part of the site. I think comparisons would likely be part of it anyway. I am very interested in the ebay API because it can be used to list actual products on my site.

          I will almost certainly have to test different methods with customers but those customers may be few and far between. I thought it was wise to do some kind of research on this first.

            One way to go at it is using the "pick your own adventure" model.

            You would read a story, and come to a decision point. If you want to A, go to page xx. If you want to B, go to page yy. (These were physical books. You could do the same thing with links.)

            Start with general information, then offer people 2-3 choices of where to go next. Provide added info based on their choice, then offer another small set of choices. Lead them through a process that identifies the best option based on their path through the site.

              I used to read them a few decades ago. That sounds like a good way to do things. That suggest links as opposed to radio buttons, checkboxes or select lists or maybe combinations of different methods. I will almost certainly try different approaches.

              This reminds me of another question I was going to ask about research.

        That is correct Nate. I am not so interested in doing ebooks.
