I came across this URL shortener service today. Tiny URL - create a short link

It is interesting and useful for your twitter because if other people click on your link, they can RT for you easily.

The URL generated is pretty short thus it is very suitable for your 140 limited characters of tweet.

I haven't explore much yet. I think you can check how many visitors click on your link also.

Hope that this simple sharing is useful to you all.

twitter seems to be cracking down on some url shortening services....

not sure if tinyurl is one of them, though....

but the shorturl generated by the birdfeeder plugin on wp is not accepted...

guess they can't kill all of it - not with only 140 characters available.

but which ones work and which ones not ?

I use tinyurl with no problems so far. Tweetdeck and Twirl both have URL shortners built in which I also sometimes use.

I use Su.pr - Drive More Traffic with Your Short URLs! to shorten

It also keeps stats on how many times your url was clicked and retweeted. Plus it ties it all in with stumbleupon.

I just registered my own 4 letter domain name to do short url's as going through some other service is not always the best option, especially when money is involved in your links..

I clicked a tinyurl link the other day and it went to tinyurl.com first (with their advertising) and asked me if I wished to continue.

I would stick with running my own url shortener because you just never
know what these shortener services may have in mind for later.

just to clarify, Twitter is not cracking down on url shortener's per se. What they are cracking down on is url shortners that do NOT have any sort of "malware"/"virus" programs in place. (For example, bit.ly checks all of it's links against spam-filtering services).

This is because, the simple nature of a shortened url means that you can't tell where that link is going thus have to trust the "tweeters" or RTer's other text or judgement before clicking on it. Lately a lot of those shortened links from less reputable url shorteners have contained malware.

There is a function in tweetdeck and perhaps other apps that allows you to view the actual link that a shortened url directs to before clickiing on it. However, many are not aware of this or don't use it.
