can anyone recommend any must read marketing books that will help with internet marketing, email marketing, and affiliate marketing efforts?

I have never had any marketing classes or anything. Looking for some good books that teach it and maybe go into the psychology of it.

EDIT - Meant to post this in main forum.

Sitting on my desk right now is a copy of Stickier Marketing: How to Win Customers in a Digital Age.

I think it will provide you with a strong understanding of the objectives of digital marketing. Namely proving value to your customers through your marketing efforts and driving longer term engagement with your audience.

In my opinion digital marketing is changing so quickly, that all the books become outdated the moment they occur on the shelves of the bookstores. It is better to read some blogs and forums dedicated to this topic and to follow some prominent figures in the SEO and marketing field on their Twitter pages.

    Sound Books Makes Sound Mind

The fundamental of Marketing and Branding have not changed yet since human mind works the same way from its inception.

Of course you need to change the strategies and Tactics of branding and marketing to cater for the new ear(Digital Marketing).

If possible, please read these books

1.Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy

2.Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples

    3. The Psychology of Persuasion- INFUENCE by Robert B. Claldini

    4. The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk- Al Ries and Jack Trout.

even though, these are old books, they teach you the very fundamental of Marketing and Branding.

If you want to learn from new guys, then listen to Jeff walker and Eben pagan. They preach the same fundamentals.

    Good Luck!!!

I'd recommend you to read a lot on marketing in order to familiarize with the subject, but if I had to choose a few I'd go with:

The psychology of persuasion by Robert Cialdini
Guerrilla marleting by Jay Conrad Levinson
The 80/20 sales and marketing by Perry Marshall

I think you need to change the quality of the books you buy. Claude Hopkins Scientific Advertising was published in 1923 and is still relevant. Cialdini's Persuasion was published in the 1980's and is still a must read.

Personally if you are looking at psychology then in no particular order:
      • Influence by Cialdini (also Yes and The Small Big)
      • Neuromarketing by Patrick Renvoise
      • Brainfluence by Roger Dooley
      • Priceless by William Poundstone
      • Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman
      • Ca$hvertising by Drew Whitman
      • Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
      • Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz
      • Triggers by Joe Sugarman
      • Psychology of Selling by Brian Tracy

I could go on but that's a good start.

There are two books I'd recommend for anyone starting a business (especially an online business). They aren't necessarily about internet marketing and certainly don't tell you anything about how to do affiliate marketing or email marketing. Actually, they don't really tell you how to do anything, so if you're looking for "how to" books, they definitely aren't what you're looking for. But personally, I think "how to" books are overrated: so much changes depending on your business, your customers and the business environment in which you operate.

So rather than telling you what to do or how to do anything, what these provide is a really helpful framework on how to think about your business, your customers and your product. In other words, these books help you think for yourself so can figure out what to do and how to do it on your own, based on your own knowledge and experience with your own business and your own customers. To me that's a lot more valuable than knowing what the state-of-the-art techniques were for likely very different businesses doing affiliate marketing in 2005 (or even in 2015).

So here are my two favorites:
      • The Four Keys to the Epiphany by Steve Blank: The Four Steps to the Epiphany launched the Lean Startup approach to new ventures. It was the first book to offer that startups are not smaller versions of large companies and that new ventures are different than existing ones. Startups search for business models while existing companies execute them.
      • Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston: A collection of interviews with founders of famous technology companies about what happened in the very earliest days. Where did they get the ideas that made them rich? How did they convince investors to back them? What went wrong, and how did they recover? The reason their founders become rich is that startups do what businesses do--create value--more intensively than almost any other part of the economy. How? What are the secrets that make successful startups so insanely productive? Read this book, and let the founders themselves tell you.
      [Descriptions shamelessly adapted from Amazon.com)

Blank's book in particular would be valuable for the many WF members who seem to be looking for push-button methods to instant riches. You certainly won't get that sort of thing from his book -- but you will get a new way of thinking about what it means to start a business. In short, instead of execution, the focus is on experimentation and hypothesis testing. It's hard to overstate how important this change in mindset is.

Livingston's work is less transformative, but still very informative. And it's a really fun read!

You can go to Youtube and find alot of great videos, and even seminars of people who are making a killing. I know an offline book that you should read to. It still applies to internet marketing 100% even though it's for offline small business owners. It's called "The Ultimate Marketing Plan" by Dan Kennedy. You should pick it up on Amazon or at your local bookstore.

And study material by a guy by the name of "Yanik Silver".

Whilst someone said everything changes so fast... I think the most power tool you need to market anything anywhere, requires a proper mindset.

As far as strategies, tools, and resources go... Make sure you know what your definite online purpose means to you?

Everything else can be obtained here on the forum through research.

I'm a binge reader, I generally cannot get through thick training books, but bite size chunks add up as you get the highlights of multiple experts, and can isolate the mathematical probability of having success through assimilating other peoples proven success. Especially, when 4-5 top sellers all use the same or similar strategies.

A book written by someone who understands that you cannot just go around and market the same way as your competitors, and expect decent results.

On the same page is also Seth Godin's Purple Cow.

Marketing as far as making money online. You won't find on shelves. However a great guy is Frank Kern. That guy is a bad ass. Find reputable marketers in the WSO section. Read the reviews, search for reviews etc... As far as professional books go

    - Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy
    - Growth Hacker Marketing: A Primer on the Future of PR, Marketing, and Advertising
    - The Buying Brain: Secrets for Selling to the Subconscious Mind
    - Economics DeMYSTiFieD
    - Secret Language of Color aka color theory
    - Predictably Irrational
    - Lynda: Marketing Research Fundamentals
    - Lynda: Marketing Fundamentals
    - Explorations in the Sociology of Consumption
    - Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior

lol You'll find that in the end, much like life, everything is based on ideology. These books will just make you really intelligent on the broad spectrum on the world in marketing, life and society and will not really give you a system to making money online. You gotta shop for those courses.

    - Screw 9-5 aka Lazy Ass Stoner. He has a youtube channel
    - Wealthy Affiliate
    - Most importantly if you are looking to make money in SEO and websites. Search for SEO case studies.

If you wanna go hardcore. Academic's are the way to go because they cover everything
    - Theory
    - Principles
    - Essentials
    - etcc

These books are hella expensive though.

Be weary, it is action that makes money not theory. Ultimately you'll find yourself reading one of those books while taking an MMO course at the same time. Treat this like your in college. If you haven't already, take a quick course on money management, time management and goal setting to set yourself up and then get into all the marketing stuff. It should only take you like a week to learn all the self management stuff.

Some aspects of sales and marketing change fast e.g. Facebook marketing books are out of date almost as soon as they are printed. But others don't because the way people think and behave doesn't change all that much. So I recommend Influence by Robert Cialdini, Write to Sell by Andy Maslen and Cashvertising by Eric Drew Whitman. The last two are copywriting books, but they made me look at what, how and why people buy, in a new way.
