Mobile Phone Development and IM Opportunities

I just read, with great interest, this article on the BBC News Site:

BBC NEWS | Technology | Mobile phones get cyborg vision

Via the video function of a mobile phone's camera it is now possible to combine a regular pictorial view with added data from the internet...
I primarily serve the offline, local business market with Internet Ads and promotional business material for home based and small businesses. I have purchased some .mobi domains with the intent of creating a new directory site especially geared for the mobile phone.

A few weeks ago I was shopping for some additional .mobi domains and just about everything I typed in was available. Over the weekend I spent a lot of time looking for some good .mobi domains and everything I checked was taken. (I was specifically looking for short names, as they are easier to type on the small keypads.) I didn't find one domain I could use.

I'm wondering how this new mobile phone development will open, or 'expand' IM opportunities?

I think the real opportunities that lie mobile technology and media is that of developing complementary supplementary applications to supplement or complement your online presence.

This applies whether you have an online store front, membership site or just a blog.

"Smart phones" owners, for example, can now access such sites as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and a lot more on their cellphones.

For an Internet Marketer, one great way of harnessing the power of the mobile phone is by creating applications for your membership sites that will allow your subscribers to login and access their paid content which will be "streamed" to their mobile phones in much the same way as we can login to and access the New York Times on our cellphones.

You may also use the SMS marketing strategies. There are companies both online and offline that help to setup and offer this service for you. I don't have the official statistics, but I am pretty sure a lot of people have SMS plans as part of their monthly mobile phone package. I know that most youth (the "Mobile Generation") have unlimited texting as part of their monthly plans.

So, I think there are a lot of available opportunities out there for IMers to both expand and dramatically revolutionize their business using mobile technology. And, I am hoping that a lot more fruits will ripen as time goes on (and as "smarter" phones are developed and released.)

    All the best,
    Muhammad

The only thing I would say Val is I dont see the significance of the .mobi suffix. Many existing sites use javascript to detect the browser/device so in effect they show normally on a PC and scale/adjust detail when viewed on a mobile device. I think .com is so ubiquitous and that .mobi is surplus to requirements, all in my humble opinion of course!
