AZON Finally pays me!

So years ago I had this terrible idea for an Azon site, I pretty much gave up on the idea instantly because it was turning out to be COMPLETE GARBAGE. This was like 7 pages of "content" and 1 link built to it. I never got paid and I couldn't figure out why, nor did I care because the idea was a complete waste of my time and I have no idea what I was thinking in the first place.
And apparently they're paying me for it?

6/2/2011 04/2011 Advertising Fees $0.84 $0.84
8/2/2011 06/2011 Advertising Fees $1.04 $1.88
9/2/2011 07/2011 Advertising Fees $2.32 $4.20
10/2/2011 08/2011 Advertising Fees $10.32 $14.52
11/2/2011 09/2011 Advertising Fees $0.83 $15.35
12/2/2011 10/2011 Advertising Fees $18.60 $33.95
1/2/2012 11/2011 Advertising Fees $14.96 $48.91
2/2/2012 12/2011 Advertising Fees $17.92 $66.83
4/2/2012 02/2012 Advertising Fees $31.20 $98.03
1/2/2013 11/2012 Advertising Fees $0.30 $98.33
3/2/2013 01/2013 Advertising Fees $11.96 $110.29
5/2/2013 03/2013 Advertising Fees $12.00 $122.29
6/2/2013 04/2013 Advertising Fees $12.80 $135.09
10/29/2015 Payment by Check -$135.09 $0.00

I hope this is an inspiration to somebody, even if your idea is borderline retarded like this one, it might work out. Had I actually given this some actual effort it might have made decent money, but I honestly just wanted to pretend it never happened.

Think about the money you could have made with a decent site, though...

Right, at the time I had (and still have) other sites that were good ideas, established, actually making money, and most importantly they weren't Azon. Don't get me wrong, it's a great program for people to get started with affiliate marketing. I got started a long time ago though and I don't really work with anything that pays 4% commissions. I was attracted to the idea that it was super easy and I could potentially own my own little Azon site farm.

I only put half a day into the project and I couldn't get the site to look right. It was a wordpress site and it took me a long time to have any success building a WP site that didn't look like an 6th grader project. (Lies: I just source designs now, never had any success at it period.)

I'm completely serious when I say this: If I presented that site as a project in a college level graphics design or web design course, the professor would have round-house kicked me out the class. It was that insultingly bad.

I have no problem working with 4%. On Ebay, I get 2.5%. And still worth it.

What's the profit? I presume this is gross.

That's after the processing fees, 35-50% of those numbers minus ads, spend is like 84$ for this month, the slower months it was 0. I'm not saying dump your current operation, I'm saying do both. I run a bunch of stuff, I love having a small eCommerce site because it forces you to move around, get out of the house, etc. I guess it's not for everybody, I can't suddenly decide not to process the orders one day. When I'm trying to launch new sites or products it does get in the way a bit. But I source most of the work so I kinda bounce around between packing orders, working on sites, and hiring all day.

you say you get up to 50% margins but that doesnt sound realistic to me. i'm guessing profit margins are generally between 10-25% and probably varies a lot on industry. i guess it also depends on how much you sell products for, because even pricing above competitors, you will still get sales.

Standard markup for a retail business is 100% of cost. (200ROI, 50% profit margin) Obviously online, you do have competition, but you also have a massive flood of people who have no patients or knowledge of prices (or a brain, sounds like you have one, but most people do not.) If I was in a situation where I needed to dump product because I couldn't sell it, I'd put it on Ebay and yeah 10-25% margins there. I don't try to "price compete." I just try to get the buy button in front of the prospect.

yeah just look at newegg, for example. their products are almost always more expensive and yet people flock there. so lower price is not what people always want, even if people find prices lower elsewhere, they will buy on newegg because they've grown accustomed to it and dont want the inconvenience of registering on new store, figuring out what return policy is, etc. that can be a good thing if you can get some recurring customers on your side.

i think the main obstacle that prevents me from getting into retail is finding reliable distributors and the whole process of getting those products to my customers on time with low shipping cost. sounds like a tedious job to actually find someone legit, i wouldnt want to do anything half assed

It's a massive pain, they always want you to prove that you're in business (selling the products they distribute) before you're in the business. That's how it goes and how it works, it's a massive chicken and the egg problem and it's always that way when working with distributors. Even if you threw 250k at a retail business, you still won't be able to have the connections you need upfront for it to be really successful. There seems to be this legitimate expectation that you have to somehow make it with-out them, before you can even work with legit distributors. And how you do that, I have no idea, (I guess you resell?) offline retail definitely can be hard.
