I'm doing the whole course in screencasts to help keep the info accessible and actionable. Feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks, Warriors.

  • I think that introductory video is way too long. You have it chunked out on the right - maybe should have done cuts at those points.

  • 2 hours!!!!

Break up the video into smaller videos would be my tip. The video graphics looks pretty crappy too.

    • Thank you.

I was wondering if I just had too short of an attention span.

The content of what you are discussing sounds good.

I began to drift off and wonder what kind of laptop battery the guy in the park had. I was waiting to see him get up and go over for a hot dog from the local vendor.

    • I agree on this the standard length for a youtube video is about 10 - 20 mins max for higher end content creation. unless the content is really good then you can do an hr or more. case point, adobe photoshop instructional videos and game cutscenes. Remember know your audience in relation to your content. look for similar channels find out how well they are doing and how they are producing their content. see what you can do better or different. Tailor to gaps but keep in touch with trends. IE "ice bucket challenge." If you see a trend like that capitalize on that. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the production was all on me, so graphics aren't that great. But everything is in HD, which helps a bit.

The course is sort of lecture style, and I worry cutting it up would cause the lessons to lose a bit of momentum. The topics are difficult to explain in less than an hour.

    • Look up jenna marbles. She jumpcuts the hell out of her videos. be creative on cuts people will understand if it makes sense.

  • When I first saw it I thought it was great, like farmville, easy to understand, but then but I felt it was too wordy and long winded I got frustrated thinking "just get to the point" when I was listening to it. Lots of "Ummmmms...." and "you know" and pauses made me lose my confidence in the course and the instructor.
I could only last a few minutes before I got frustrated and bored and mentally checked out and clicked away from it.

I then fast forwarded to the 32min mark and saw that spread sheet and I was like No Way! It looked like a chapter from a Civil Engineering book and way too complex for me. sorry
    good luck though.

    • My attention span on a you tube video is 3:00-4:00 minutes. I thin tjat is true for the majority of people.

Do that and then include a link in the description where people can go to get the longer version if they want. Upload it to your blog or web page for them to watch. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the honest feedback, guys. Much appreciated. It's so hard to break up a subject like creating a niche feasibility study. To explain it (properly) in five minutes just isn't possible and splitting the lecture up into chunks would be (I think) even more irritating for someone serious about the course. Thank you all the same for the feedback. I'll keep thinking about the approach and take your comments into deep consideration.

Jeff, the idea of having linkable longer versions beneath shorter lesson versions is excellent. I'm definitely going to think about that. Thanks for the idea!
  • Hey I didn't see anyone else mention this - but I would edit your audio. I feel like it's just a little bit too loud, so you're probably getting "clipped" (distorted). I'd go back and reduce the decibels.

    Of course...

I have a headache today so I'm probably over sensitive.

But I can still hear it clipping - sometimes pretty clearly.

    Maybe it's just me?

  • By the way, if you want to - you can export your audio to Audacity. It'll show you where your audio goes from green to yellow to red so you can edit it accordingly.

  • Thanks for the feedback, guys. Like I was saying, I hesitate cutting it up Jenna Marbles' style simply because it would make the content unwatchable - I'm picturing a screencast jumping all over the place. Maybe I could refilm as a head-on shot of me explaining the concepts, but the whole point of the series is to be actionable and accessible to people through demonstration. I think I'm just going to create little video 'previews' of each lesson and encourage people to click through for the longer version.
  • I thought it was quite good.
I would prefer a little zooming on the spreadsheet though so I could see the numbers better.

    • Thanks, Troy. I think you may be the only one that watched it that far. Thanks for the feedback.
