  If you are talking about people just starting out then there are lists or reasons why they fail,
  
  Firstly they do a small bit of research in google or other search engines trying to find out how to make money on-line, they get into the thinking its easy and think they are going to push a few buttons and produce sacks of cash whenever they want,
  
  Now is that there fault or the so called gurus marketers selling them there next product promising xyz with fake reviews and good sales copy also promoting unrealistic weekly earnings.
  
  Once they buy in the sale then takes them through the sales funnel where they start to spend $$$$$ on crap they don't even understand and if they did they need further investment to get it of the ground,
  
  They try and put the product they bought into use, but its not as easy as they first thought so they either give up or go after the next shiny object as there getting bombarded by sales e mails from other marketers on a daily basis promoting offers.
  
  The ones that give up got off lightly. as the ones that keep chasing keep spending and they end up spending a fortune on make money products without even making any money at all.
  
  Then they get sucked into the one on one mentoring, this the same mentor that has made a few sales in his so called marketing career and is now charging 5k plus for shitty information that you could find out yourself if you had just taken your time and researched a little before jumping in to the large pool with the other sharks,
  
  By this time they are flat broke still don't know there arse from there elbow as they are still looking through rose tinted glasses
  
  This is just one reason why people fail there are loads more out there, its all about research research and more research and the right mindset without this the sharks will eat you

You're asking questions that only have guesses as answers. No one tracks the numbers that you're asking about, at least to my knowledge. I've been here for over a decade and I've never seen any studies, surveys, or reports detailing the demographics of Internet Marketers. There is little, if any, barrier to this industry so anyone can claim to be an "IMer."

I personally believe that too many people enter this industry expecting too much too soon.

If you think of IM as a career worthy of a college degree in order to claim to be a professional, how many have gone to the effort of four years of study and considerable expense in order to graduate? Very, very few.

It's been my experience that most quit because they don't make the money that meets their expectation, whatever that may be.

The roadblocks, challenges, and obstacles to creating a profitable online business are numerous and ever changing. Profitability is a moving target and there are only a few that ever hit the mark. Products go stale over time, consumer demands are always evolving, and successful marketing strategies and methods come and go.

I have to admit my first impression of the industry was not accurate and even now I'm not really sure what the reality is.

In some cases it seems like people are looking for the quick and easy ways to drive traffic and make money. Which is a spammy image.

In other cases people seem to be creating really amazing content, which gives this intellectual author type image.

And just recently I discovered that some people have teams of other people working for them, giving a corporate type image.

Perhaps the right question would be "What did people think about affiliate marketing before they came to the industry".

Maybe misconception is a reason for giving up? Not finding what they expected?

I've since learned that the industry is full of hard working experts who know a lot across a broad range. Even my image of forums like this one is constantly changing, I'll probably come to regret all the stupid posts I've done including this one!

All a part of me trying to understand the online marketing world. Given that I don't if I should say internet marketer, affiliate marketer or online marketing I think there is some progress to be made!

quit probability = sqrt(expected results) / achieved results

expectation has a lot to do with it, but ultimately, the amount of achieved results is the bottom line for determining the probability of someone quitting

I believe most people quit because their expectations don't match up with their experience and results.

It only makes sense to be discouraged when you buy a ton of products that say you will make $100 a day and in reality you end up losing $100 a day.

I would also, add that most people quit because they don't have the proper guidance and/or support to help them stay positive throughout the process of learning and getting results from their online marketing efforts.

It is all of the Hype without the proper real explanation of HOW everything works in this Industry - that makes people get in and quit as soon as they see how much work it is necessary to make it happen.

The "bad gurus" are the ones who trick people into thinking that this is as easy as clicking a few buttons and automatically making the big bucks!

It is true that you can make huge amounts of money in this industry, but that is after you have built a solid foundation of Daily Targeted Traffic Flow, Daily Leads Flow, and Daily Sales Flow.

The concepts are really simple - but the action you need to take to build it all, the right way, are where the true challenge comes in.

Most people, today, are too used to getting everything "On Demand" - because of how fast technology is progressing - so, when the hear about an Online Income Stream, is like they automatically think it is another On Demand Gadget and that they can make money very easily right away! LOL

It is also true that you can make money very easy in this industry - but never ever right away!

You can only make big money and easy money, AFTER you have built a solid foundation.

Another big reason why most people quit - is their Mindset and their Beliefs.

Success is 80% Mindset/Belief and 20% Massive Consistent Action.

But most people do not even care to learn more about this simple concept.You also need to work on the belief you have of Exchanging your Time for Money.

That is an old concept and belief most people today have.
Most people have this belief that they should be exchanging their time for money - very deeply inserted in their Subconscious Mind.This is why you should really learn about working on your beliefs, and learn more about self-development. This is the reason why most people in this industry preach about Self-Development!!!

Find those outdated beliefs in your mind and shift them to the beliefs you actually want to have!

I would think that a lot end up quitting because of lack of funds and or they become discouraged when things don't go as planned. In the end, there is a learning curve to get to profitability and the only way it's going to happen is to have enough money and stay motivated.

It's not easy, that's why. Which is why I like it. Keeps the "free money hunters" away, or they get involved, figure out it's hard and quit. Also, most people who get involved with IM do not have enough money to invest. They don't understand that it's a business, but are just attracted to the concept that you are your own boss (which is BS, you still have to follow all the rules that the leading companies create; google, networks, processors and can get "fired.") If somehow I lost everything and had to start with nothing but a 100$ laptop and an internet connection, I could hit 5k a month within a month or two. Granted, it took years to figure out how and what to do. I still make stupid mistakes and I have no idea how the guys who pull a million a month do it. But from observation, I can see it's not easy and it usually isn't as legit or ethical as it appears to be.

Hey Coralbaylover,
I am a fellow aussie as well and I may not be able to give you the stat's but I can offer this.
I think people quit because they are in it for the wrong reasons.
You can't just be in IM only for making money.
You have to have an interest or passion.
Or you just need to be willing to be passionate enough about making money.-That one is a little harder to sustain, but achievable.
Not having the right training or support will hinder ones success in IM.
Lacking the drive required to work on one's own.-Those are just my views.-Jennifer

Lot of people are getting their labels wrong
I.M Is every things associated with marketing on the web for every business
MMO Is associated with the people who quit mostly as they think the magic button will bring them riches , they just don't see the hard work for the next 6 months just to make $50 a month ( I am generalizing on the $50 + or -)

its simple, if you quit then you were in the wrong business. you did not evaluate the business, you had a wrong approach, no well set plans and goals. you just entered into that business because someone else is making money through it. you never took your time to learn. so my opinion is, failures are as a result of lack of knowledge or even some people lack patience. remember, Rome was not built in a day. take your time, learn and strategize. thank you

I'd say a vast majority of people who start, quit. Most people are only open to push button software or stupid WSO's claiming to make people rich. Once they realize they have to build an actual business and that it won't happen overnight, people are back to their crappy day jobs and then bad mouth making money online as a scam.

I don't know about other people, but for me it was a combination of a lot of these reasons: ignorance about what everything meant, lack of time and energy, lack of education and not knowing where to get it, no funds, misguided expectations and definitely the "ooh shiny!" syndrome of money making ideas.

Even though I have been earning a living online for the past decade, I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do online to take my income to the next level. The same things are standing in the way... except my expectations are on point this time.

From my perspective, most people quit when they encounter the following situation. They receive a lack of results after putting a lot of hard work into it. And after trying their best to rectify the problem based on the limited pool of knowledge they have in IM, they still receive minimal results and eventually give up thinking it is not possible to earn a profit.

Unlike schooling where there is a fixed curriculum, learning how to succeed in IM is like teaching yourself how to survive in the jungle. Most people just don't make that breakthrough and grow to the path of success.

People quit because they expect Internet Marketing to be an easy method of making money. It takes a lot of work, learning, trying, and failing before you succeed. Not everyone is willing to pay their dues.

I think Steve B and a few others touched on it.

I know ,fortunately , I was not bombarded with the regular Mantra in when I first started in IM. i.e. "start making 10K a month next week in your pajamas with 1 hour work a day" LOL

I found it by accident nad it was a simple no nonsense process.

But I think the majority of people quit because the cases where someone is making 10K within a week or month is very rare.

It can take months if not years to get to that level.

People want it quick and want it "yesterday".
So their expectations are totally warped and they quit

Well its a big question with a ton of variables. Most people don't get what makes money online etc. It's the reason most quit - simple lack of what to do. The easy way is you have to be an expert in your field - whatever it may be. You have to charge serous money for value. Originally I was a naturopathic doctor and I started a simple site with the idea to help people. After repeated requests I made a simple course in herbal medicine. Charged $500 for it and was shocked to see that many many people had no problem signing up for it,. $7 dollar products are not going to work - figure what you know and expand on it...

I recently did a bit of research where I analyzed the blogroll of the Quick Start Challenge that was held in July. I've found that 89% of the people did quit within the first 3 months. Not included people who never submitted their blog in the blogroll or never even made a blog in the first place.
You can read the whole article on my blog.

I'd sum up the most common failure causes:
- wrong beliefs that IM is "quick and easy money with no knowledge and or effort"
- no action takers. Reading a lot but not implementing the read information
- not consistent - many quit after they don't get rich overnight

The main problem I think is the mindset that most of the new internet marketers have.
I for my part eliminated the option of quitting and/or failing altogether. I know I will succeed, therefore I will succeed.

I've had a bricks-and-mortar biz and an Internet biz. The only difference is the real estate.

CoralBayLover, if you want to know the stats, go to the US Chamber of Commerce and look up the bricks-and-mortar stats or simply Google "why most businesses fail', "number of businesses that fail in the first year", or read this: http://www.yoursuccessprogram.com/blog/17-biggest-excuses-people-never-become-successful/.

Peeps are peeps and very, very few have the tenacity, the grit, the willingness to read and study forever and apply what's learned that it takes to make a go of a business, regardless of its location. In fact, most have no clue what business is to begin with and really don't want to know.

I would say most marketers quit because they expect to make a full time living online extremely fast and expect to do next to zero work.

When they find out they have to actually work to build their business a bit, they get put off and decide they would rather focus their energy somewhere else.

A lot of people end up quitting for many reasons but here are just a few off the top of my head.

-They become overwhelmed.
With so many strategies out there many don't even know where to start.

-poor time management.
People spend so much time off topic and don't focus on the things that need to be done.

-shiny object syndrome.
