Need Help Becoming A Web Developer

Hello Everyone,

I want to understand the basics of webdesign, not necessarly being a full pledge web developer, at the time, it was the only way, I could think of pharsing my question. I reposted some more information below. I really want to learn and understand this industry, I have had some schooling, but not the true nuts and bolts on web design, for instance uploading your FTP files. Thanks to all of you that posted it is much appreciate, I have enough information to keep me busy for awhile. I am just tired of becoming an affiliate for this or an affiliate for that, I don't think, I can make money online as an affiliate.

Isn't the idea is to collect data from potential customers, otherwise the actual site owner is the one who gets the data.

Starting with some predesign templates and setting up a web page from the predesign templates are a good way for me to start. Add the SEO using meta tags, does meta tags still work today?

Start understanding what to charge customers for this service and understand how to give the potential customer exactly what they want.

Eventually add dreamweaver to my set of tools of webdesign, and start personalizing websites. Right now, I am just ready to go with something, otherwise, I will continue to suffer from information overload, and get caught doing nothing for the next year.

I thought that starting with some predesign stuff, will at least get me going, and from this point slowly progress. So once again, thank you all for thie information, and I am certain, I will have more questions to follow.

Thanks,
Cplayers.

I actually went to the Site Point kits, and after glancing through all the information. I am believing this program does give me the nuts and bolts. I believe, I will spend the price to make this happen.

This Kit will teach you the business aspect. How to get clients, how to approach them, how to followup, contracts, everything.

It will NOT teach you a programming language, photoshop or other technical skills. It's strictly to learn the business.

Once you're done with it, you'll be very, very confident in pursuing offline web development.

Does anyone on this thread understand what a web developer is ????

A Website Designer - Someone that can design page layout and images (some designers have the skill of knowing how to increase conversions, NOT ALL DO)

A Website Programmer - Someone that can code a website from scratch using many different technologies (normally programmers can not design worth a hoot). Many times programmers are also versed in software creation.

A Website Coder - Someone that takes pre-exsiting code and modify it or use open source code to build a site or scripts (a coder is not always someone that can build highly complex sites from scratch)

A Website Developer - Someone that has skills in page layout, website design, coding and programming.

All of the above is not something that is just learned by going to some website. Yes you can learn basics and such but many times there are skills that are required that takes years of work to master. There is a great deal more that goes into website building than what some of those websites such as w3school can teach you.

It takes a great deal of time and very long hours, it takes people skills, customer service, learning what user friendlyness is, learning how images can increase conversion, how a page layout can help or hurt your sales.. Many of these skills can not just be learned from some website or ebook.

I am a website developer and have been for over 15 years, I love what I do.. I have a passion to build something that is useful and helpful to others, I work many times 20 hours a day 7 days a week... As I said though I actually love what I do, I do not just do it for the money. If your heart is not in it then most the time this is not the type of job for you.

Not knocking the OP at all for wanting to do something, just want to make sure you understand what it really takes to be in this industry...

I have been teaching myself for almost a year, I can code from scratch a basic site with html, I can adapt already coded sites pretty easily and I am learning php.

I have been also learning all the graphics design programs, I have the adobe full master suite collection, I'm starting to going back to college on the 18th of this month at 41 to finish my graphic design skills degree ect...

I enjoy this type of work plus it will afford me the ability to stay home with my new baby boy!

All I can say is that if you are going to teach yourself there is alot to learn like posted above its not by osmosis thats for sure I sure wish it was. It can be done IF you have a strong desire to do it and enjoy it, thats really all you need, you will develope the abilities over time....

All the resources to learn are on the net, many of them here.......

Yes, James you are correct and I appreciate your spelling out the web developer. I just recently received my Visual Communication Certificate, and versus working for company, I want to work for myself. I understand that it will be challenging at first, but I need to give this try, no matter what.

    Hi Everyone again,

Maybe I posted the question wrong, because as of this point, I have received some awesome resources from your post, and it is much appreciated. I am looking to understand web design, and development better. I want to help local business get online get their website up and running using some predesign templates, not necessarily building from scratch. I just need to make sure, I understand how to help clients get their website built and optimized, and I want to manage their website. Once the site is up and running I can assist with optimization, hosting, and any new changes. Assist with managing a pay per click campaign. I hope this help, but once the information and resoures I have received is exactly what I am looking for to get my website business going.
