Traffic Generation or Good Copy - which one first?

Hi there,

I have been trying to get traffic to my site for about a month now and see a steady stream of maybe 15 - 20 visitors per day - no sales or signups (its a free offer).

What I am not sure about is do I concentrate on getting more traffic because the numbers I am getting are too low to see if my copy will convert OR

Do I tweak the copy again (done it twice already) and see if that results in any conversions at all with the small amount of traffic I am getting

I am using article marketing, blogs, forum and blog posting and free traffic (free ad sites and opt in email lists) but most of the visitors I have had have come from my sig line here

So feeling like this is a bit like the chicken and egg theory can anyone set me straight on what is the best course of action now?

    More traffic. Fair salescopy.

    As the traffic builds, start tweaking your salespage.

      Yeah I agree. You dont really have enough traffic history to determine if you need to change your copy. What do the analytics tell about the visitors coming to your site. Are they spending enough time on your site to read your copy or are they leaving right away?

        The offer has to be of really great value! That is the first rule!

        The site needs to look decent, clean, not confusing and so forth.

        opt in, above the fold, really great headline.
        Use 3 squeeze page templates to split test. Send traffic to 1 first, than second, than 3rd, In 5 days you will know which squeeze converts the best, send more traffic to that one.

        For this you need to have 3 different aweber forms created. That is of course doing it manually.

          Ivana is perfectly right here!

          I recently helped a guy with his adsense site because he was getting traffic and trying to improve his google rankings so that he could get more traffic and then make more money.

          But before he did i asked him why he only had one adsense ad on his site!

          His response was 'urrrm i don't know'!

          So i showed him the benefit he would have of adding two more and which two ads formats to use and where.

          So now before he does any seo he added those in and increased his earnings from his current visitors before he went mad on traffic generation to earn even more.

          Edditting what you already have is much easier than generating something new so i would really suggest you try and get some conversions right now. You could also look at an exit popup which could help!

          Okay yours is a little bit different but before you waste time getting more traffic you need to know that the traffic you are already getting is going to help you and in the end make you money. Which yours seems to not do currently!

          So yeah work on your copy conversions now and then work on traffic!

    Hi and thanks for the replies

    Textbox - the traffic does not seem to be spending a lot of time on the site - 95% of them under a minute at most, which is why I thought copy, but with traffic figures so low I am just not sure

    The page loads quickly in IE (have not tested it on other browsers), the copy is straight forward - no side boxes, ads or anything else to distract reader - just straight read through down to sign in box and explanation of what happens next - is it possible it is too simple and so is not taken seriously?

      I would personally work on your sales copy so your conversions are good. You don't have to have a ton of traffic to see how well your copy converts. I remember when I first started out, I was getting at least 1-2 sales a day from just 30-40 visitors.

      Think of it this way...if your sales copy isn't converting now, it still won't convert with more traffic. But if you tweak your sales copy now so it converts, when you do get more traffic, your sales are going to be great.

    It seems to me to be a bit of a vicious circle. Until you get more visitors you don't truly know if your presentation is working but at least you are getting some visitors so maybe concentrating on a page that gets them to stay longer on your site is the first thing to do. After all, no point getting more people if they are going to click away again immediately. Good luck.

    Asking which is more important is a bit like asking whether you prefer your left or your right eye.

    Unless you're a pirate, BOTH should be important to you!

    However, what you really should be doing is split testing. Yes, you can do that even with just 10 visitors a day - I wrote a free report on it (NO opt-in required).

    The thing I would test is your OFFER. What do you offer in return for their email address? Do you offer a powerful report that will help your reader? Do you explain exactly why they will benefit by subscribing? Split test your subscriptions.

    Traffic Generation always.

    You can't tell how good your copy is (or tweak it) until you test it. Hence, you need traffic to determine this.
