Hi guys,

3. drop shipper

I do not have much talents, except that i can write very well and fast. Writing is my second nature.

What are you passionate about? If you enjoy writing you could work on developing a blog and do affiliate marketing. Focus on areas where you can provide value and expertise.

I would expect there's a lot of money in that! Good writing skills in general will prove very useful. But as Alex said there is more to online business than affiliate links and AdSense - do some research into list-building and sales funnels. Ideally you'd want a way to earn some recurring passive income from your readers. Maybe a subscription based service for fans of your writing? Lots of brainstorming will help tremendously

    Hi Chia,

What you have listed there are examples of monetisation strategies and there is a lot more to business than simply providing content with a couple affiliate links.

All of the strategies you mentioned would be useful, yet first I recommend you build a strong foundation with your own blog dedicated to a profitable niche, which you can use to build a strong community and ultimately monetise by providing value as opposed to random affiliate links

You can get a Wordpress site set up, hosted and with a premium domain for under $20.

You can make it look awesome with a premium theme for under $100.

There's always a cheap way of doing things, you'll normally end up paying for it in time instead though. You could use a free theme or a blogging 'solution' for free, though the headaches are not worth it later on.

    Hello Chia!

Amazon Associates and other similar affiliate programs would be good for you to start your affiliate marketing business. Sooner or later you're going to learn to do other types of affiliate business. Goodluck to you!

do you feel that dropshipping is better than affiliate business?

The problem with drop shipping is that the margin is too thin to be competitive. any suggestions?

I cannot say definitively on either, because some people have made it good for themselves in the dropshipping business too! However, I can say this one for sure - there are a lot of people who have made significant earnings on affiliate marketing. In 2011 alone it was estimated that approximately $1.8 billion USD were paid to affiliates in the UK and USA, there are others who also got a slice of the pie elsewhere, but the numbers are sketchy due to no tax reports on their earnings. Still it is a significant amount, could be even bigger than what the affiliates in the US/UK got!

Also, you're right about the low margins on the dropshipping business, even though they are flexible and easy to setup, there are no guarantees that you'll get a good customer base for the products you're selling. In my opinion, if nothing works, I always go back to SEO and SMM to start my client base or I also buy email lists to scrape off clients from those. But I haven't tried dropshipping personally though.

My advice is, if you're passionate on both and can't decide yet, then try with what has been established to work which is affiliate marketing and once you start doing well, then try out the dropshipping business and see if it will work for you. At least that way you can let go or keep going anytime you want! It really depends on one thing - which will benefit you best. Go first to the thing that you're sure you will win, then the trivial things make them your second priority.

      I hope this helps.

if you like writing erotica why not write some erotica fiction?

Its all well and good setting up something to make money, BUT if you're not passionate about it or enjoy it, it will show in the stuff you set up, the content you write etc.

If you like writing, then write a book if you feel you have it in you...just a thought.

    As mentioned, there are some basic tools & resources needed to promote anything online. Such as;

    - Domain
    - Hosting
    - Filezilla (ftp client)
    - Landing Pages (squeeze)
    - Autoresponder (email marketing)
    - Tracking (analytics)
    - Targeted Traffic (ppc)
    - Free Traffic (article syndication/blogging/forums, etc...)

...But, most importantly is knowing beforehand there is a demand & a solution.

Clearly, dropshipping & adsense may not require the same marketing approach as say; publishing affiliate products, or selling digital solutions...

But, the key elements, tools, and resources are very similar... and to market ANYTHING requires research, testing, and hard numbers to determine your success (or failure.)

Point being, I too entered this forum with a passion for writing, and quickly realized; in order to really generate success from writing... requires investments of time, effort, and money to endure the 'learning curve' and acquire the fundamental tools, resources, and knowledge to actually write & market writings for (dare I say) profit!

However, once you assemble the proper tools & resources writing is 'the main' ingredient for creating online success IMHO.

Even the best selling VSL's ( video sales letters) are crafted by some masterful copy writers, and generate sales based on the written, spoken, and/or visual messages contained therein.

Ad copy, also requires an ability to craft attention grabbing and powerful calls to action to draw potential buyers into your sales funnel.

Once in the funnel... at the landing page stage, there too - writing powerful calls to action is needed to obtain subscribers or to capture & generate leads, and direct response sales.

Sales pages, also... all based on written content to ultimately ask for... and make the sale!

Email marketing and follow ups, newsletters, blogging, social media (such as Facebook, Twitter, Medium, Buffer, forum posting, article syndication, etc... All based on writing!

Ultimately, if you "understand the following" and can provide for their wants, desires, and or their needs by providing benefit, remedy, or quality solution(s)... You can 'unlimit your writing potential' as there 'IS' a 'HUGE' demand for affiliate publishers, web content, syndicated content, guest blogging, ad copy, copywriting, info product creation (ebooks, ecourses, Kindle books, training materials, etc...)

For me personally, the 'learning curve' was much steeper climb than I anticipated. To market ANY of the ideas you are considering above, any of the 3 can be profitable... 'IF' you mentally prepare yourself to research, learn, and apply the knowledge shared here on the warrior forum.

Lastly, you will need to do your own 'due dilligence' regarding the tools, resources, and training you invest your time, effort, and money into... as there is a ton of pre-planning, aforethought, and trial & error involved... and a lot of bs to sift through getting there.

In conclusion, you and only you can decide what, where, when, and how you build your success online.

Personally, I remain focused on the solution first and foremost. If you start with a mindset to provide solution... You can research, and map out your entire game plan without spending a dime!!!

Once you know; there's a demand, a hungry consumer base, and have the nourishing solution to feed that consumers hunger... the rest will fall into place.

    All the Best,

    Art

PS Erotica, romance novels, and saucy "Shades of Grey" writing can be profitable, as my Mom was a Danielle Steel fanatic, and though I can't read or write that style... there 'is' a market for it!

Looking at your signature, and the vague post above, I am assuming you mean...

Find affiliate products on JVzoo and write reviews, correct?

      If so, that can work.

However, your post reads like a newbie should create a product & launch it through jvzoo... But, most newbies would not have the wherewithal to start there.

  • Chia,

Let's see ... You love to write. You're in Singapore ...

Well, you could offer your English content writing services as a telecommuting subcontractor to Singaporean companies with recently launched products, specifically those that are targeting overseas English speaking markets via Web promotions ...

When you get more than enough contracts that you can handle, perhaps you can form a team and also help other Singaporeans who have significant English content writing skills to earn decent income as your homebased subcontractors -- You help them, they help you, you help these Singaporean companies, they pay you, you split those contract payments with your team ...

While you're doing these things, set up a blog and document your content writing business start-up adventures. Along the way, provide an opt-in material that can help other Singaporeans who would want to improve their English content writing skills so as to possibly earn income as telecommuting subcontractual writers. Give your subscribers some valuable pieces of advice that can help them do what they want, based on your experience ...

By doing this, you'll have a ready pool of English content writers that you can add to your team when needed. You can also promote books, software tools and other products that can help them improve their English content writing skills, their service sales skills and so on ...

When you become good at content marketing because of your experience in handling contracts with those Singaporean companies -- You can help other companies in your country by offering your content marketing consultancy services and content writing services. So, better to include helpful content marketing topics for businesses and companies in your blog and opt-in offers ...

        • Chia,

As a follow-up to my post above -- Think about this:

If some companies and their affiliates with content and products (physical and digital) aren't allowed or are very much restricted to advertise in large search & display networks like Google and Bing, in heavily trafficked social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, in popular content repositories like Youtube and so on ...

          ... THEN:

What do many of them do to promote their sites and products on the Web?

Well, there are those private ad placements; and

Yeah -- Many of them implement continuous content marketing campaigns, especially for SEO, link bait and offsite traffic funneling purposes ...

Perhaps they can be your ideal market, especially since you enjoy writing content about erotica-related stuff?

I would recommend setting up a website, which provides high-value content related to your niche for free. This could either be helping people write in that genre, or you could focus on publishing methods or profiting from books in the genre. The choice is yours.

From there, you can build an email list and ultimately ask them if this subscription service is something they would like.

Listen, if you are a writer...the best thing you can do is create a blog. Create lots of content and link out to affiliate products.

If you can publish a lot of content to your site, you'll get a FLOOD of traffic from the search engines.

You can then monetize that traffic with affiliate offers and promotions. Seems simple, but you can easily create a $2000, $3000, or$20,000 per month site doing this.

Get hosting, download wordpress, buy a domain name, and start creating content.

I am going to go out on a limb here, but have you tried thinking outside of the typical MMO box?

Most MMO ideas center on mailing lists, web publishing etc.

Why not focus on offering an online software service (SAAS)?

Why not focus on an interesting twist on B2B arbitrage?

In other words, why not come up with a business idea that is VENTURE CAPITAL-fundable?

It depends how fast you need to start earning. One of the quickest ways is affiliate marketing with email mareting, selecting products and services that come with a full marketing system with opt in pages, banners etc, So all you need to do is focus on sending traffic to your optin pages, then follow up in emails. I currently use this method as its quick, fast way of earning.

Yes, it could be, but the goal is to have a good quality traffic, and to have so, you need to make a good quality content. It's much better on the long-term.

That's not true. Traffic doesn't come to a website out of the blue, even if it has great content on it. It reminds me of people who think that sitting around their house will get them dates. It doesn't.

Yep, sometimes in the past you would find this happening. But definitely not much at all anymore.

The "build it and they will come" without doing anything else rarely works these days.

I can tell you from observation this has been a time kill and downfall for many people. I've seen people do this for years thinking their ship will sail in if they keep producing content day in and day out. And to
            no avail

I may be biased on this....well....I am.....I started learning Digital and Social Media Marketing in 2007 and in 2008, I started my own company handing Internet Marketing for Business Owners. That is all I have done the past 8 years. I have dabbled with some affiliate products during that time frame but my bread and butter is getting paid between $750.00 to $2,500.00 per client to manage or consult them with Digital and Social Media Marketing.
I wouldn't change a thing, I am very proud of my career choice and when I meet people at events, parties or bars, they all either need my services or want a career like me.

    Hello chia,
If you are a good writer and into the erotica genre I might suggest Amazon kdp primarily because of the low barrier to entry in combination with a large "potential" audience / customer base.

The amazon kdp game is going to be similar to a lot of the internet marketing businesses in that there are thousands of people doing it wrong and not making any money at it, and a few that do their homework, and make an amazing living at it.

The following two posts were found here on the warrior forum, which should give you a general idea of the actions required to do this successfully. I hope you find them helpful.

    #1 ---------------------------------

Originally Posted by lionpuncher View Post

Basically, my problem was a case of "shiny object syndrome," in that I would surf these forums for hours, get sucked by all the clever copywriting, and leave a few hours later mentally drained and overwhelmed from all the stuff I thought I had to do to make any money.

So I took some advice that I got in the thread, picked a strategy and for the past three months have been grinding it out at least a few hours per day. I'm making this post to "pay it forward," just in case there are some similar people out there who are in a situation like I was a few months ago and are looking for some inspiration.

My strategy: self publishing erotica to Amazon

I chose this because I'm a decent writer and a fast typist, and I personally consider this strategy to require very little thought. You write a book, put it up on Amazon, then you write the next book. Its pretty easy.

So here's a full breakdown of what I do:

    1) Pick a kink
    2) Write the story
    3) Buy a cover on fiverr
    4) Format the book using Calibre
    5) Enroll in KDP Select
    6) Promote for 5 days for free (to boost ranking)
    7) Buy $5 for promotion for extra visibility (+/- 500-1000 downloads)
    8) Once you have 3-4 books, bundle them together and create another book

    1) Pick a kink -

Erotica is basically porn for your mind. Actually, I think there are a lot of similarities between porn and erotica. People watch porn to get off, and the same is true for reading erotica.

As such, people are turned on by different things. Without getting into too much detail, let's just say that what gets me hot and bothered may not do the same for you - and vice versa.

The idea then, is that you really can't go wrong when you pick a kink. Just write about whatever turns you on. Sure, BDSM is a popular topic, but if it doesn't turn you on then there is no point in writing about it.

Assuming that you will be writing the stories yourself, you want to pick something that works for you. When I write, I try to shoot for 5000 words. That seems to be the minimum length that people will want to read, although now I'm realizing that in fact it should be longer than that, probably closer to 10-15 thousand words.

While you could probably knock out one 5k story in a day, the longer ones will take you a few days so its up to you how long you want to make them. If you're writing the shorter stories, its better to choose hot topics so they're easier to sell.

    2) Write the story

Like I said, 5k words should do it. If I'm writing in OpenOffice (or Word), then that usually amounts to 10 pages of written text. On an e-reader, it will be able 20 pages. On my word processor, I take the first few pages to set up the story, the next few to set up the sex, and then around page 6-7 I start the sex scene. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later.

Coming up with ideas is hard, so I like to steal them. Movies, TV, other books, it doesn't really matter because there are pretty much no more original ideas out there anymore. Steal a little from here, a little from there and before you know it, you've got your own story line. Just fill in the gaps, add a little sex and boom - instant story.

I also use a thesaurus, especially during the sex scenes, so it doesn't get repetitive. Using a thesaurus is like watching a different porn clip - it stimulates in new ways.

    3) Buy a cover on fiverr

There are plenty of designers who will make you a cover on fiverr. If you take a look at the erotica section of Amazon, you'll see that most of the covers are poorly designed shit. That means if yours is any good, it will stand out from the rest.

You can also design your own cover with photoshop or Gimp (free version of photoshop), and Amazon also has a cover creator tool that you can use. I've used the tool quite a bit and found it to be very helpful, although you are quite limited in what kind of designs you can make with it.

My advice is to just spend the $5 and buy a nice cover. You will easily make that back in the lifetime of your book.

    4) Format using Calibre

Formatting is easy with Calibre, as long as you know what you're doing. The biggest thing is to format your document when you're actually writing it. What I mean by this is that you need to set the indent for your paragraphs at .5, and the spacing between lines at .16.

This gives you nice looking paragraphs that are double spaced in between, much easier on the eyes.

The guts of your book need to be like this:

Table of contents (created in Calibre)
    Title page (title, copyright, etc)
    Story
    Email list

People say starting an email list is super useful, though I have to admit this is a weak area for me. I only recently started doing this, and have built a list of about 100 people so far. I basically tell them that if they sign up, I'll let them know when my books are free so they don't have to pay for them. I can't say that I've made any money from the list just yet, though I suppose its a good thing to have.

I also like to put a section called, "A note from the author" in the beginning - just me asking for an honest review of the book. I say that I'm a professional author, reviews are good, and that I need more of them. So if you like the book, please review it blah blah blah. The reviews trickle in, but people are reluctant to review erotica, probably for the same reason that people would be reluctant to review porn clips.

    5) Enroll in KDP Select

To KDP Select or not? That is the question. Some people have great success publishin through other distributors. Personally, I did not. When I first started, I published to as many places as I could. After a month, the only other place I had any sales was Barnes and Noble, with a few sales here and there on A1 Adult Ebooks.

This was right around the time that Amazon released Kindle Unlimited. You pay 10 bucks a month, and can download as many KDP Select titles for free as you want. Authors still get paid, somewhere between 1-2 dollars per "borrow."

So the choice was either make a little money on Amazon and a little money on BN, or just throw everything in with Amazon. I made my choice and have stuck with it, though I suppose the grass is always greener to some degree. While I can't say that I am a bazillionaire just yet, during my 2nd month of constant work, I made over 1200 bucks. Some people make more, but it just goes to show what the potential is if you put the work in.

The main benefit is that your books are available in KU, which means people can read it without paying. Everyone likes free shit, but you still get paid.

    6) 5 day free promo + boost on fiver

This is #7 as well, but I'll just explain them both right here. Anyway, another benefit of KDP Select is that every 3 months, Amazon will let you promote your book for free for 5 days. Now, people say that its better to space out the days, but personally I like things to be as easy for me as possible so I can focus on writing.

That means that I like to put all 5 days at once. Set it and forget it (another reason why I only like to publish to 1 retailer). Now, before I do this, I schedule a promotion with someone on fiverr with the username of Bknights. He has a website that promotes kindle books. You give him a link to your book and the dates of the promo, and he will add it to his site.

People go there to look for deals, and if they like the looks of your book, they might download it. While you don't make any money directly from doing this, you will probably get some email subscribers. Also, when your book is downloaded for free, it boosts your Amazon ranking, increasing the visibility of your book. You might also get some reviews.

The hope is that the residual boost in rank will add up to enough sales/borrows to at least cover the cost of the promotion. Most of the time, this is the case.

    8) Creating bundles

The idea behind this is pretty simple. Write 3-4 stories in a series (same characters), then bundle them together. I forgot to mention it, but you should price your books at 2.99. That will get you the higher royalty from Amazon - and it is also an acceptable price for erotic shorts.

You can of course price them at whatever you want, but 2.99 should be your starting point. When you create a bundle, depending on the length of your stories, you should set the price at 3.99. If they are long stories, then you can price it higher. Though 3.99 is a good general rule of thumb.

Bundles are great, because you can bundle whatever you want. If you have 12 stories (3 series of 4 stories each), then you can create 1 bundle per series (3 bundles), another bundle (the first story in each series), and then another bundle (all 12 stories together). The more stories you have, the more possibilities you have to create bundles.

Obviously, don't go overboard with this (its tempting!).

    9) Rinse and Repeat

That's the strategy right there. It requires a lot of work, but fortunately most of this work is just typing out words. My biggest problem with getting into making money online was seeing the big picture. Each individual step seemed clear enough, but tying it all together just boggled my mind. Some people out there can do it, but for some reason I just wasn't able to.

I like this strategy because its so simple. You write a short story, put a cover, publish and promote. If you have the time and inclination, you can do 1 a day. Within a few months, you should be making decent money.

When I started getting serious (September 2014), I already had a combined 13 short stories and bundles. I was not making very much money.

Almost 3 months later, I have a combined 83. To be honest, I thought I would be making more money with this system by now, but as people will tell you, this is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes time to build your catalogue and get your name out there. I mean, it takes 60 days to get paid on anything you sell anyway, so if you're going to get started, keep that in mind as well.

My first month, I made almost $400. My second month, $1200. My third month might be a little less than that, sad to say, because with the holidays here, people are saving money for gifts and whatnot.

The good news is that Amazon is now giving a 6 month subscription to KU with their new reading devices. So that's lowering the barriers even more. People will be buying lots of their devices for christmas, so that means that putting in the work now will make early 2015 very profitable for some of us!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my super long post. Just a reminder to people out there that if you're not having any success with what you're doing, keep trying!

You can still make a shitload of money writing erotica even after Amazon applied some "family-friendly" filters over a year ago. Is it harder to profit now? generally speaking, yes, but you can still publish books and earn with little to no promotion.

Fetishes and weird shit often sells:
Spend some time looking for weird little kinks, if you can. Here's an example:

Back in 2013 I noticed a book about "lactation sex," or men who enjoyed drinking a girl's breast milk while in the act. I found the fetish odd, so I checked out the book's ranking. I noticed it was selling pretty well, even without any reviews whatsoever (a number fewer than 20,000 is a good rank, in my eyes).

I checked another book on the same subject, and another................and another (x10). Most of them were successful. From different authors, mind you. So i jumped in and was pleasantly surprised with my results.

So again, look out for weird little fetishes here and there. The uncommon often sells.

    A word on bundles:
Also, this is the absolute best time to publish a mega bundle if you have lots of individual books available. I don't know if it has anything to do with this time of year, but every time I publish a big bundle around this time, the book tends to bring a few hundred bucks almost indefinitely (I have seen bundles whose momentum never dwindled that much, almost a full year later).

    Reviews:
Granted, positive reviews have helped keep those bundles selling, but you should still do great even with a handful of testimonials. So don't be afraid of encouraging reviews within the book's description and inside the book itself.

Unless your story is truly horrible or the reader is a picky *******, the majority of such reviews will be positive....... or neutral at worst.

    Experimental, but potentially worthwhile:
Here's something else you can try (admittedly, I haven't played much with this, so take it with a grain of salt)....

Dont always promote one of your own books inside (inside of a book someone just purchased from you). Instead, you may occasionally want to promote the works of a popular erotica author. Introduce your readers to a particular book and provide a hyperlink to it.

In turn, assuming many people buy that author's book through your link, this means that your book might eventually show up within that author's "Customers Also Bought" section. This is a handy section that appears on a book's main description page, and it usually gets lots of eyeballs.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you how great that would be...

In my opinion you gave the answer to yourself already: you could start a blog, become a copywriter, maybe even write your own Kindle eBook or even start a social media channel about writing and EVERYTHING related to it.

Start with what you can bring to the table, not what everyone is talking about right now.

but the real reason they failed is they try 7 things at once. Pick one, focus and do that, and make money that one.

Once you stop focusing on one thing, then you will start to chase your tail and make $0

do not be a JACK OF ALL TRADES as they say, and master of none.

You really should consider creating your own products - digital books on Kindle or packaging them into PDF's that you sell on your own site as well as other affiliate directories such as Clickbank or Ejunkie

In the end, the reputation you build and prospect/customer list you build through marketing your own products will far outweigh anything you do selling other people's products AND you have more skin in the game so generally speaking, you will work harder at it.

Over time, you can then leverage other people (affiliates/partners) to sell your products for you which allows you to move on to the next product/ebook/book - if you good at and find writing easy, then you have a big advantage already in this area.
