Can you guess? The most popular Internet topics

I was recently doing some research online for a new domain name and I wanted to know which terms were most popular and competitive among the following words: Internet, net, network, digital, online, or web. I planned to use one of these in the domain name itself. Any guesses?

So in my searching I found a list of the top 10,000 most popular topics by domain count. Yes, there are some caveats so this list is not entirely scientific. The list is only for dot coms. There are no single letters as topics like "i" and no numbers like "1" or "10" or "360." Also, the list is from 2012 so there are bound to be some changes since then.

As it turns out, the word "web" is #1, "net" is #2, "online" is #18, "digital" is #43, "network" is #68, and "Internet" is last at #147.

Here are some other topics that you might find interesting: "art" is #3, "home" is #7, "mobile" is #12, "blog" is #16, "travel" is #17, "info" is #22, "book" is #25, "video" is #26, "music" is #27, "game" is #28, "news" is #32, and "marketing" is #81.

Here's the source (which you can freely download in a text file) or view online:

Maybe this list will be helpful for others.

I appreciate your post. However, I'm afraid that those topics might be so broad that their usefulness might be limited

After all, most marketers understand that effective marketing is all about intent and 'mindscape' targeting (ie., the range of probable intent regarding a particular topic choice)

Perhaps a better approach would be to use social media signals and crowdsourced topic analysis/theme categorization for domain / site ideas.

Brian Dean of Backlinko spells out how to do this using wikipedia and reddit.

It is fun to see what people prefer to use in their domain names. However, these are general terms who don't say nothing about topic popularity.

I still like to count topic popularity by number of searches in search engines.

Yes, certainly these are very broad topics and not really helpful by themselves. They are merely suggesting subjects that have high domain name counts with that word in the domain itself. Of course, I would love to own the dot com for any of these general broad one-word domain names - just think of owning "news.com" or "music.com" - selling such a name would set you up for life!

My interest, as stated in the first post, was to see the domain popularity differences between the six terms I was interested in. So I found out that the word "web," for example, is comparatively more popular for domain names than the word "Internet."

        Hi Steve!

My personal favorite has always been 'How-To'.
        About 7,690,000,000 results

The term is also at the top of the power words list, right up there with Free.

Doesn't matter where they appear in the domain name, the long tail (first or last), and/or the meta description & title, just so long as they're there. Cyber-psychology, ya' know.

I'm amazed that "tech" or "information" isn't ranked higher amongst these topics.

      Randall,

Actually, "tech" is #4, but "information" is down at #872.

I was surprised that "sex" wasn't higher (#66) and I thought "income" would be up there too, but it was #1418.

    Number 7777 is "cbd."

I thought sevens were supposed to be lucky. This word wasn't even lucky enough to get a vowel.
