Need advice on starting an online business

Hi Everyone. I'm looking to start my first online business and want to really do my research. I'm hoping to gather enough information to be able to start a profitable online business in a relatively short time period.

I currently work in SEO for a B2B SaaS startup. Previously, I started my own ecommerce dropship site with Shopify and a couple of content sites with wordpress. Additionally, I currently run an Amazon arbitrage business with my wife and am dabbling in private label with a business partner. These fizzled out quickly. I'm reaching out because I would love some help because up to this point I haven't been able to figure out the formula for sustainable and consistent growth.

If you have started a successful internet business I'd love to hear what you have to say about the following questions.

1. Which industries are seeing the highest growth rate with the least amount of time and resources involved? (ecommerce, mobile marketing, lead gen, content sites, SaaS, services, etc.)
2. Where is a good place to find a mentor and how should I approach a potential mentor?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd say mobile app product sales, and even inbound telesales services, though this isn't something that you can do with limited resources, unles you contract this to an existing call center network for a revenue share arrangement ...

Why? Here are a few interesting things:

** Forbes Welcome -- "The mobile universe and the app economy are growing so fast and evolving so rapidly, sometimes it's hard to make sense of it all, much less sniff out opportunity" ...

I don't know about a "mentor" in the sense that's mainly used here in the Warrior Forum, though in my experience, I partner up with people (mostly C-level executives, company leaders, business owners, start-ups, non-profit advocates, local and national government officials) who mutually benefit with me from our shared expertise, networks and resources ...

I appreciate the response and agree that mobile marketing is a huge opportunity. How do you start a mobile marketing site though? Also, what is a tactic you use to partner up with people?

Since I'm sure you know this can't be answered in a forum post - Here are some basic things that can help you start:

Pinpoint significant demand for certain mobile apps. Determine current supply. Study your currently available resources. Select an app category and a niche market. Formulate value-added benefits for your niche market; and

Create your mobile app's free version in a way that provides you with back end sales opportunities (like getting names, emails and / or mobile phone numbers of users during installation), front end income opportunities (like displaying unobtrusive CPI / CPC / CPM ads in certain sections of your app) and / or direct front end sales opportunities (like ad-free premium version with special functions). Then:

Learn all about digital media buying for mobile apps. Design your advertising and marketing campaigns. Track your results. Improve on the things that are working, and stop doing what isn't ...

Listen, the best thing you can do to build an online business right now are one of two ways:

    1. Sell Informational products
    2. Sell physical products.

Informational products are just "how to" tips and products. So basically selling your own online courses. And these type of products offer 100% commissions because they cost nothing to create and deliver.

    -PDF
    -Videos
    -Webinars

Are all examples of types of products. Your other option would be to sell your own physical products.

Sites like Amazon allow you to use their platforms and target their millions of buyer members. The easiest way to do is is by dropshipping products or sourcing them yourself and having your own private labels.

Find out what's selling on Amazon and then go to Alibaba.com and source a similar product with your own branding.

There is a lot of technique to both these strategies, but this should give you some direction as to where to go next..

    I wish you much success,

Direct importing can generate massive profits, but the first part of my sourcing technique is to avoid Alibaba like the plague. There are a lot of reasons but here are a few:
      • It is difficult to know if you are dealing with genuine manufacturers or opportunist traders. Most suppliers listed on Alibaba claim to be manufacturers but are not. .
      • Scammers love Alibaba. Check them out on ripoffreport.com.
      • Alibaba's verification system is a joke. Verified suppliers are businesses that when visited by Alibaba were found to actually exist. They were there when the visit took place, even if the office was only rented by the day.
      • Almost every importing "expert" will tell you to only use Gold Suppliers for safety, but the only difference between Gold Suppliers and those plain verified ones is that they paid some money to buy the Gold badge.
If you want to learn more about safe sourcing and easy importing, you might like to check out my thread:Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

I think Max raises a good point, mobile marketing is exploding. I bought an app creator a few months back, and while I haven't committed to selling offline mobile services as of yet, there is some great info, training, and poduct packages being offered by Kevin Z of Start a Mobile Marketing Business With brick&mobile

What amazes me is the technology being offered in the form of rewards programs, iBeacon technology, and mobile apps including; e-wallets, instant discounts, and opportunities that are being born everyday both online and off.

Currently, I am content earning some affiliate commissions promoting a few quality 3rd party affiliate products/services, while forging a path towards creating info products, and niche related materials.

Ultimately, I just want to write beneficial and informative materials that will serve others well, and after a few years of personal studies, some offline gigs, I am finally gearing up to take this business from a hobby to a full-time income.

With your current knowledge of saas, e-commerce, it sounds to me you simply need to focus on traffic strategies and pre-selling, as the tech stuff for me was a major learning curve. If you've got that part down, setting up a tight sales funnel, list building, and email marketing should be easy for you to adapt into your future business model.

    Good luck,

Art, you are amazing! This helped a ton. I'm going to take a look at brick and mobile. Also, you're advice on learning pre-selling and traffic strategies is exactly what I need to learn. I will be applying everything you just told me. Thank you SO much!

If you need a mentor, simply reach out to them. Most people have a contact page on their website and a lot of successful entrepreneurs offer paid mentorship services.

Another great method for finding a mentor is to ask authoritative figures if they could suggest a mentor for you. Influencers who no longer have time to conduct full-time mentorship often know a few other people who would be happy to help.

    Hey digitalnomadboy,

Here are some questions I would ask you to get a better idea on how to help you. Are you looking to run this business yourself or looking to outsource? What are you strengths, interests?

As JohnMatos mentioned, information products are good, but if you want to stand out from the competition, you will need to differentiate yourself in someway.

A service business is good to start, cause you can outsource or do it yourself, but in order to start in a short time you will need to have a network of connections, and have some sort of reputation for people to take a chance on you. You said you work for a startup, so that could be a good place to start getting referrals to start a service business ASAP.

If you need more information, reach out through PM.

Hope I helped in some way :-)

if you are interested in selling physical products then selling products via Amazon FBA is the best option in my opinion. I know there are courses for this which are so expensive..But I know a friend who did this business and is earning a good income through this. He is now committed in helping others to start their own physical product business on Amazon.
but if you want to get into an Affiliate business then I know someone who is an expert in this business.. I personally think he can help you to get started with this business.. Just recently also he promoted products related diabetes Mellitus using one of his affiliate funnel and it worked really well for him.. I can say he is an Expert I recommend to anyone who is looking to get started with an online business in their own!

I can help you to get contact with him if you like..

I've been doing lead generation for 15+ years.

With lead generation / PPL (pay per lead) there is no credit card required to complete an offer. All a user has to do is fill out a form and I make money. So conversion rates are typically much higher than offers that require a sale. It has worked out extremely well for me.

I get the bulk of my offers from different CPA networks, I also work directly with advertisers and create my own offers that that I sell the leads directly to end buyers.

I would recommend to anyone to look into it.

    Hello

We would have one of the largest IM Business's out of anyone here on the Warrior Forum, around US$14 million a year turnover an 60 full time employees. In 12 years we have been involved in most types of IM, including private mentoring, but we now concentrate on Affiliate Marketing an Online Services to small and medium size Business's. The Online Services is now the largest part of our Business.

I would suggest as some others have done, the Offline Services to SMB Business's. You already have experience in SEO so have some knowledge in this area. We offer over 20 different services to this market an it is one that you can build vertically (providing more an more services to your established customer base) It is also one that has many opportunities for monthly residual income.

It is a huge an continually growing market, approx 100,000 new Business's open each month in the US alone, an you are not limited even by country. We are based in the UK but currently operate in 4 countries, UK, US, Canada an Australia.

Re Services to offer, the two services I would start with are Mobile conversions of websites that are not mobile responsive, an Lead Generation. Brick & Mobile would be a good platform for you for the Mobile. Lead Generation is where you can use your existing SEO skills.

    Cheers

    Lindy

Ebay and Fiverr. You'd make alot of money with these 2 sites - especially since you're new to internet marketing and online business. They will help you learn the mechanics of running a business in general.

    Hey digitalnomadboy,
When I started out here years ago there were a few Warriors who indirectly mentored me. They really didn't even know they were LOL
But I basically just took in all they said and studied them and then on occasion PMed them in a respectful and non intrusive way.

It can serve you well just by doing this
