The Million Dollar Myth

Just shy of 3 years ago my business partner and I sat in an office and talked about an idea...

We saw a highly competitive industry with major earnings potential, and we wanted to launch an online business that sold services within that industry.

We didn't want to be the ones fulfilling the service we were selling, so the idea was that we would sell the services and then contract the work to professionals for delivery.

This was our online business.

We both had full time jobs, I was financially destitute at the time, and there was a zero dollar marketing budget to start. But we went after it anyway.

Now 35 months later our accountant has just got done recalculating our total revenue, and we've crossed one million dollars in gross online sales.

Here's what our balance sheet looks like to date:

This is something I've read that less than 1% of businesses ever accomplish- hitting a million in sales.

That's crazy to me. Because here's the myth I want to debunk...

Earning a million dollars in online sales was NOT hard.

And I think this is very relevant to share as motivation, inspiration, support, guidance, whatever you want to call it, for everyone out there building their business.

Because I started with NOTHING- no budget, no authority, no credibility, no reviews, no name or connections to fall back on. Just another website that popped up outta nowhere that no one had ever heard of.

And now that I have all those things we didn't start with, I look back on the journey here, and it was so much easier than I would have ever thought.

You are so much closer to earning a million dollars with your website than you may even realize, even if you haven't launched it yet.

Now I'm not saying it didn't take sacrifice and discipline, and staying in and losing friends, and fighting through obstacles and setbacks, and living poor for the first year...

But if you were to strip it all away and tell me that all I had to do is go through that again to get HERE, then I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

This is not rocket science, it's not splitting the atom or finding a cure for cancer. Those things are hard.

This is just building a website, mastering online marketing and salesmanship, learning how to be a leader, and building a brand. And having the basic human discipline to stay focused on what you want until you get it.

That's all information you can find for mostly free on the internet.

But there are also 3 crucial concepts I want to give you that I don't see being talked about enough...

1. Making $50 a day is a good place to start, but it shouldn't be your goal.

Far too many people are talking like they're "experts" at online marketing because they made $50 in a day or $100 in day or something. And they want to sell their system to earn $136.71 each day with only 20 minutes of work...

Ah, okay I guess. That's $36,000 a year. That's a full time income, but it's not a comfortable one. And it doesn't come with benefits. And it's not really all that secure. So really it's less than the average job

Don't get me wrong, we all need to start somewhere. But far too many people are looking for a "quick system" instead of learning how to build a real online business that will provide you a real living for years to come.

Focusing on $50 a day will very rarely lead you to a million dollar business. Just being real with you. Because the people building million dollar empires are focused on big ideas, and creating strategies to get there. Long term payoff vs short term mentality.

2. You can choose whatever industry you want to be in, so choose one where you can actually sell something that will make you enough to get to a million dollars.

It's going to be really difficult to get to a million in sales with a $10 product, unless you have an amazing back end and are selling thousand dollar coaching programs.

I was able to generate $1M in sales because our price point was over $200 minimum on the front end.

You can choose to sell anything online. I went into an industry I knew nothing about, strictly based on the opportunity I saw available. Opportunity is abundant online, so stop fighting with the small fish. Choose to sell something that can get you to big goals.

3. Create something of value. I know this one should be obvious, but judging by the state of the internet today, it's anything but.

If you want to sell for a higher price point and make a lot of money, you need to get really serious about your value proposition.

In other words...what do you promise in exchange for your prospect's hard-earned money, and why should they buy from you instead of someone else?

And above all, understand that if you are serious about building an online business, then you need to start thinking of yourself as the CEO of your own enterprise.

I see so many people in this online marketing world who have a hobbyist attitude about making money online, but think they're going to make a lot of money. The disconnect is they don't think of themselves as a real business.

All "making money online" means is that you are leveraging the internet to sell something. It can be absolutely anything you want, but it most certainly needs to be treated as a real business if you ever hope to have any real success.

Earning $1M is not hard. If I can do it coming from nothing, then so can you. And I hope this encourages you on that path.

Next stop, earning $1M in profits

Wishing you success,

Nick Peroni

Congrats to you guys for forging out a path to success!

More importantly, thank-you for confirming something I argue all time. People here often suggest starting in a niche market you are passionate about, but learning to become passionate about providing solutions in any market seems more appropriate to me.

Don't get me wrong, I think those fortunate enough to build a business around their passion is great, as is so with musicians, artists, writers, etc... But, all to often, it is usually the rare few who are talented enough to acheive maximum success.

Also, you obviously put a ton of emphasis on delivering solutions (be it through a service or products) as your primary focus, and all else was secondary.

I've been guilty of (2) things as I did see this as a hobby at the beginning of my online journey, and the other was setting my goals so high, it required obtaining a great deal of study, sacrifice, time, energy, and some money... Of which, I am just now gaining confidence to treat this like I have my prior offline business explorations.

Hopefully, this thread helps people to stop searching for a magic solution or the all-too-common misconception building an online business doesn't require work, discipline, time, energy, and some money. As it remains my belief the rewards can be well worth the wait, as you've shared above.

One of the main reasons I wanted to make this post is because I wanted people to see a different opinion about online marketing from everything I see today...

I probably could have saved myself thousands of dollars and thousands of hours on things that didn't work if I had read something like this 5 years ago. Because I didn't just start out successful with this business, there was about 2 years of failure into the world of online marketing before that first 6-figure year.

And even then, it didn't get easier. More money equals bigger challenges.

But because I did try so many things and did spend so much money and time on all the different products and solutions out there, that's why I've been able to see the real value in creating a strategy that's based on opportunity and long term rewards.

I absolutely agree with you- "learning to become passionate about providing solutions in any market". That's what online marketing as a skill set is really all about- once you learn it, you can apply it to anything you want.

I fell in love with online marketing and learning how to build a business from nothing, that's what became my passion.

      Best wishes to your success!

Haha that's a fair point, but they were not.

Since we're based on selling a service instead of something like an information product, our margin is not quite as high what many Warriors may be used to, because we contract out the services we sell.

But our profit margin is still around 50% on average from month to month.

Of course there's still some overheard and taxes to consider of that 50% profit, but that's the cost of growth and business.

    Thanks for the great share!

Being able to reach that point with no start-up capital and even no mentor was definitely impressive. But on the other hands, I could also see something as powerful that wasn't missing: "Teamwork".

When two or more people trust each other and embark on an adventure, they can definitely accomplish great things. This is one of those key advice I don't hear very often in the IM world, but I consider it as effective as having a great mentor you can rely on.

      Definitely a great point.

I mean don't get me wrong, I learned a lot by reading and investing in self-education from more successful people along the way. But you're right, teamwork is definitely an irreplaceable part of success.

It gives you someone to hold you accountable, that way you're both constantly pushing each other to achieve bigger and better things.

Absolutely! The biggest factor that took us from an okay first year to quadrupling our revenue in the 2nd year was sitting down for a solid couple days with no distractions and forming a strategy.

And that strategy evolved as we moved, but it was the starting point for all our biggest accomplishments.

You know, seeing threads like these on the warrior forum are very encouraging. It makes me want to delve into past methods that I have tried to research in its entirety before taking any action (i.e. Article arbitrage).

The scariest part of doing so (for me) is just thinking or believeing that the money I could invest into said business could go to waste.

Reading threads like these help me to believe that making an online business (whether service or not) is still possible. Thanks for the good information.

Thank you for the comment, I'm glad you found it encouraging.

I believe that fear of investing is something most of us have, and I think it can also be a very beneficial tool to keep us on the right path. Starting with no money is almost a blessing because it makes you that much smarter and more careful about what you do, so when you finally start making money to grow, you won't waste it.

It's definitely possible, no matter what you're selling. Just need to form a strategy based around a proven business model, no matter how long it takes, and then follow through with it tenaciously.

I appreciate you giving me the benefit of the doubt.

I actually think this comment only reinforces my last point in the thread. Clearly the state of the internet is in poor condition if your first reaction is to think I wasted hours of my time creating a false spreadsheet to show a million dollars in sales for a thread that gives a ton of value and doesn't try to sell anything...

The truth is that the insight I offer in this thread would not come from anything but experience, and I would think an experienced marketer such as yourself would recognize that.

While most hobbyist online entrepreneurs love to post screenshots of the their Paypal account or JVZoo account, real businesses do not take screenshot proof to their quarterly meetings. They have a balance sheet that keeps track of all numbers figured by their accountant.

This sheet is our income report for each month, showing profit gains over the same month last year, for the last 3 years since we started. We have too many sources of revenue and traffic to be concerned with taking a bunch of screenshot pictures and putting them all into one file- that's for the $10 info products.

And our YTD is like that because that's how we like to keep track of our numbers

I didn't say we made $1M a year, or that we banked a $1M in profits- in fact, that's the next goal. I just said we accomplished something that 99% of businesses never do- $1M in total sales revenue through nothing more than a website working from home.

It is different than what most people share, and that's exactly why I thought it so fitting to make this thread. Because people need to realize that "online business" is not confined to Paypal screenshots and $50 a day systems...

That you can still build a real business through the internet and make enough money that you don't need to worry about selling your "recipe" as the next $10 info product.

Quick update here to anyone who may have been wondering about the authenticity of this post, which would in turn of course de-value the advice I give...

Here's a screenshot of just one of our main accounts for online sales we took in this year alone. Like I mentioned to the guy above, there's too many different accounts to concern myself with screenshots on all of them.

But I think over $500,000 in one year in just one account validates my originally posted spreadsheet...

I wish it was all profits! But no, just total revenue right now. Our profit margin is about 50%

There are still 2 big goals to hit...

Interestingly enough, I have actually considered setting up an affiliate program for this because the sale point is high enough and diverse enough for people to make good commissions from.

However, while this is an online business that can benefit from multiple forms of online marketing and traffic; what I sell is somewhat unique compared to most online marketers.

But at the end of the day, it's online marketing 101- target market to a sales funnel. If you're really interested in this, send me a pm. Setting up an affiliate program is something I'm looking at for 2016.

    Nick Peroni

An inspiring post. We need more of that here on the WF, especially now that many of the main gang have, like Elvis, left the building.

You're not trying to sell anything, and you have no obligation to prove anything with screenshots. Some people here are just crabby, and some may try to get you to make a mistake and reveal something in a screenshot they can investigate.

    Congrats!
Recently I've read a book by Brian Tracy, 21 secrets of self-made millionaires, and I'm very inspired.
The only question I would like to ask is did you write down goals for every day?

I think everyone has a different approach when it comes to goals. The most important thing I've learned is that you have to find what approach works best for you.

And I'm going to share my approach, but stay with me here a second...

I remember when I first got started as an entrepreneur I'd read so many things from other people about the Law of Attraction and Manifesting Your Destiny, and Success Boards and Vision Guides, and Affirmations, and anything you can think of...

I tried so many of them, never had much luck with those types of goal setting strategies.

So yes, I do write down my goals and take time often to write out my ideas and my big vision for where I want to be with my life. But for me, what has always worked is just taking the time to understand what I want.

I used to get frustrated in the past when other people would swear by certain techniques for achieving success, and it wouldn't work for me. But in the meantime, through trying multiple different techniques I came to understand what I wanted. That was the most important part.

And it became something that burned in my mind night and day, that I wanted to live a free life and build my own income through an online business. And everyday I got up and worked at it until it happened.

So that's my long-winded answer Hope it helped!
