The Million Dollar Myth
We saw a highly competitive industry with major earnings potential, and we wanted to launch an online business that sold services within that industry.
We didn't want to be the ones fulfilling the service we were selling, so the idea was that we would sell the services and then contract the work to professionals for delivery.
This was our online business.
We both had full time jobs, I was financially destitute at the time, and there was a zero dollar marketing budget to start. But we went after it anyway.
Now 35 months later our accountant has just got done recalculating our total revenue, and we've crossed one million dollars in gross online sales.
Here's what our balance sheet looks like to date:
This is something I've read that less than 1% of businesses ever accomplish- hitting a million in sales.
That's crazy to me. Because here's the myth I want to debunk...
Earning a million dollars in online sales was NOT hard.
And I think this is very relevant to share as motivation, inspiration, support, guidance, whatever you want to call it, for everyone out there building their business.
Because I started with NOTHING- no budget, no authority, no credibility, no reviews, no name or connections to fall back on. Just another website that popped up outta nowhere that no one had ever heard of.
And now that I have all those things we didn't start with, I look back on the journey here, and it was so much easier than I would have ever thought.
You are so much closer to earning a million dollars with your website than you may even realize, even if you haven't launched it yet.
Now I'm not saying it didn't take sacrifice and discipline, and staying in and losing friends, and fighting through obstacles and setbacks, and living poor for the first year...
But if you were to strip it all away and tell me that all I had to do is go through that again to get HERE, then I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
This is not rocket science, it's not splitting the atom or finding a cure for cancer. Those things are hard.
This is just building a website, mastering online marketing and salesmanship, learning how to be a leader, and building a brand. And having the basic human discipline to stay focused on what you want until you get it.
That's all information you can find for mostly free on the internet.
But there are also 3 crucial concepts I want to give you that I don't see being talked about enough...
1. Making $50 a day is a good place to start, but it shouldn't be your goal.
Far too many people are talking like they're "experts" at online marketing because they made $50 in a day or $100 in day or something. And they want to sell their system to earn $136.71 each day with only 20 minutes of work...
Ah, okay I guess. That's $36,000 a year. That's a full time income, but it's not a comfortable one. And it doesn't come with benefits. And it's not really all that secure. So really it's less than the average job
Don't get me wrong, we all need to start somewhere. But far too many people are looking for a "quick system" instead of learning how to build a real online business that will provide you a real living for years to come.
Focusing on $50 a day will very rarely lead you to a million dollar business. Just being real with you. Because the people building million dollar empires are focused on big ideas, and creating strategies to get there. Long term payoff vs short term mentality.
2. You can choose whatever industry you want to be in, so choose one where you can actually sell something that will make you enough to get to a million dollars.
It's going to be really difficult to get to a million in sales with a $10 product, unless you have an amazing back end and are selling thousand dollar coaching programs.
I was able to generate $1M in sales because our price point was over $200 minimum on the front end.
You can choose to sell anything online. I went into an industry I knew nothing about, strictly based on the opportunity I saw available. Opportunity is abundant online, so stop fighting with the small fish. Choose to sell something that can get you to big goals.
3. Create something of value. I know this one should be obvious, but judging by the state of the internet today, it's anything but.
If you want to sell for a higher price point and make a lot of money, you need to get really serious about your value proposition.
In other words...what do you promise in exchange for your prospect's hard-earned money, and why should they buy from you instead of someone else?
And above all, understand that if you are serious about building an online business, then you need to start thinking of yourself as the CEO of your own enterprise.
I see so many people in this online marketing world who have a hobbyist attitude about making money online, but think they're going to make a lot of money. The disconnect is they don't think of themselves as a real business.
All "making money online" means is that you are leveraging the internet to sell something. It can be absolutely anything you want, but it most certainly needs to be treated as a real business if you ever hope to have any real success.
Earning $1M is not hard. If I can do it coming from nothing, then so can you. And I hope this encourages you on that path.
Next stop, earning $1M in profits
Wishing you success,
Nick Peroni
