Public domain or not ?

Hi,

I am looking for US public domain books to publish
them in my country (after translation).

But it's not easy to know if a book is in the domain public
or not.

Can you tell me a paid service where I can ask the question
and have a reply 100% accurate ?

Thanks in advance.

Have a good day,
Yarvua

    Yarvua,

You should go to this link: U. S. Copyright Office

The U. S. Copyright Office is an office of public record for copyright registrations and related documentation in the United States. They have made access to their registrations open to the public either in person or over the Internet. Be aware that they are still documenting copyrights so you need to be sure that what you are looking for is already in their database.

If you need to be sure that a particular work is in the public domain, it is probably best to hire a professional (that knows what he/she is doing) to conduct a copyright search for you. You can find these professionals online. Often they will be attorney firms that specialize in copyright. Find a firm in Washington D.C. which has local access to the government offices.

You can also hire employees at the copyright office to do a search for you. From their website:
"The U.S. Copyright Office offers a search service for persons interested in investigating whether a work is under copyright protection and, if so, the facts of the copyright. For a fee of $200 per hour or fraction thereof (2 hour minimum), the office will search its public records and provide a report of its findings."
So if you need to be 100% accurate (or as accurate as possible) it would be best to hire a professional to do the search for you.

Be aware that if the work was first published in the U.S. prior to 1923, it is very likely that there is no copyright coverage of that volume.

    Good luck to you,

    Steve
