Is August A Bad Month For Sales?

Hi everyone,

My sales have dropped to an unbelievable amount this month. This is my first year so I am not sure if this is to be expected in August?

Do many of you guys see a big drop in August?

Thanks
Rob

Generally, I've always found the summer to be slower in terms of sales if you're in the IM/MMO niche. But there are some niches out there that do better in summer vs. winter...

Rob, I personally think that way of thinking is a myth... you know, in the Summer sales are low and what not.

Are you sure you haven't made some change in your business that could be creating the huge drop in sales?

      Hi,

I don't think this is bad month for IM. Even in December is good for sales.

      bye

Summer is bad because people are on vacation. Vacation spots are making bank while online sales are suffering - after all, who has time to go online when you are out having fun?

I have been selling online for 7 years and the summer has always been slow over a wide range of businesses and websites I have owned.

I have not noticed a significant drop in sales , but they do tend to droop a little around this time of year.

Totally agree, plus let's say you are selling "summer goods" you will see increase

Let's say you are selling the winter goods, probably not sales at all until September

But don't let that stop you, work on setting up campaigns and September is around the corner!

I notice that body building / weight loss product sales go through the roof around summer time.

Over my 8+ years experience, I have routinely seen slowdowns in sales over the summer months. This even happens in the adult market. I worked for a major adult affiliate program with over 34,000 affiliates. This gave me a behind the scenes traffic stats for the paysites and hosted ad tools, etc.

During the summer months the kids are out of school and college kids are coming back home - this terribly hinders porn surfing...

My boy/girl twins go back to high school in a couple days (registration was yesterday)

Once the kids are back in school and the college kids are back in their dorms, sales will start to pick up again.

Also when the kids are back in school and mom has the home to herself, she will likely be looking for a way to generate some cash working online.

I would imagine most markets change very little, but certain markets might change a lot. Are you selling anything seasonal, or something that might be much more popular in non-summer months?

Between the economy and summer it has been a little slower than normal for me. Though my used games sales have climbed considerably this year for obvious reasons. Many retailers use these months to gear up for the holiday season.

I am in the gaming niche, so hopefully it will pick up when the summer months are behind us. :-)

It's ALL in HOW you promote your product.

Some of my products, "I was told", would NOT sell in December or "end of summer"...because people were "too busy thinking of other things".

      Hogwash!

If you have a GOOD product with lots of "Reasons Why" they should BUY, doesn't make any diff the "time" of the year.

However, I've found that if your product is "mediocre"....sales will go down in August and December.

So...answer is; Find products with STRONG reasons to buy.

I have always found that every product has its good and bad seasons but they are not all the same. Its best to try to sell a mixture so you don't relie on one sort of outlet. Then your trade is regular

I have also noticed that my sales have dropped this month. Nothing has changed on my part. I hope it's just a month where i am a little unlucky.

You can drive yourself crazing, with this question if you let yourself. I believe that promotion is the key for all niches, and your niches should be spread over several different areas. If you only have one niche, then I think it is putting all your eggs in 1 basket, and let's face it, if your basket is full of eggs and you trip you can lose it all and end up with egg all over! haha

Spread into several niches, and look at getting a good campaign going for each and your Sales should then be stable.

Don't forget we are in a GLOBAL market and every country has their 4 seasons, however with good promotion nothing should be seasonal if you are in the correct niches.

no market is consistent or the same. However most slow periods are predicable if you do a little competitor research...

Grab your top two or three competitors and enter their url into Quantcast.com

Under the traffic chart select "1year" and look to see when traffic dips. I'm sure you will notice a trend across websites in the same niche.

    cheers,

If you know that summer is traditionally quiet, ramp up your marketing or make a special pre-season offer to create a flood of cash before the quiet time, then go on holidays as well.

these questions and replies are obviously coming from people with no knowledge
Any true internet entrepreneur knows that August is the worst month of the year for both online sales and for google adsense
google adsense will double earnings in December and january
online stores will go dead in august because people are on holiday and they spend their money on the streets parks and beaches not on the internet
I have been doing web marketing since 2004 and am very good at seo
August is pointless doing marketing i found it out.. you bhave to market like hell just to get a few sales.. i do this just because its better than no sales.. apart from my websites dropping, i can see the data confirmed on facebook because any other month gets me about 20 thousand impressions for one link posted to my profile in about one day.. in august the same hot post can stay there for 3 days and get maybe 50 impressions.. so no one is there either.. if the statistics drop on facebook then you know everone is out playing on the beach.. just stay calm and ride through this month sirs.. its normal that it is quiet..
