Question On Flippa - I Am Worried

Hi all, I have a site for sale on flippa. It is a Google news site making $1,600 per month. I listed it for 7 days, it is 1 day 20 hours to go and I only have 6 bids, the highest is $1000. Anyone know what I need to do to increase bids?

I hate selling the site, I am forced to because of my mom who needs help. I am now worried it may not sell or why are the bids not coming in yet?

From my experience, you should see an increase in bids towards the end date as bidders wouldn't want to inflate the price unnecessarily

Why even sell it then. if it is making $1,600.00 a month, you only need to spend a few hours a week keeping it updated. And those few hours could increase the income.

I cried the day I listed it. It is not just about the money, I have emotional attachment to the site it self. I would rather keep it but I have 2 choices 1. Keep it and lose mom 2. Sell it, have mom and start all over again.

      I agree with this!

You can easily re-invest some of that profit - into expanding and growing that income faster.

Most bidding activity takes place when your auction reaches the final few hours. It sounds like you'll probably get several more bids. No guarantees, but with 6 bids and $1000 on it now, you might have a good ending unless your reserve is just too high.

The reserve price is not too high. It is about x8 of the monthly earning.

I think you should understand that a site is only worth what a ready, willing, and able buyer is willing to spend to purchase it.

If you aren't getting what you want out of it, you should find a buyer that sees the value in it like you see it.

You should understand, also, that because you are apparently trying to sell your site fast, that you may not have attracted the best buyers to your site just yet.

If I were selling a Google news site I would approach other GN site owners, especially in your same niche, and offer the site to them. They are the ones who would stand to see the value in what you have created.

I get what you are saying and I am not unsympathetic. But, if the site is making $1,600 a month then you really do not have to do anything and it will continue to make money for a while. And like I said you only need a few hours a week to keep it up and running.

And you have proven by taking time to list it on Flippa, Follow the progress on Flippa, searching and finding this forum, posting a thread and participating in that thread, you have time to put in a very small amount of time each week to your site.

You cried the day you listed the site? you will lose your mom if you keep it. Are you kidding us? I wish people would just ask the questions and keep the drama out if it.

Please go for selling the site and save your mom first. You can start afresh with a new site and take the site to that level by putting in hard work again.

You still got some time on it. I would wait it out or set a BIN price if you are set on a fixed amount of money coming in.

Based off of what I learned, if it is really earning that much per month, you should be looking at $16k+ minimum coming in from the sale of this site(in theory).

I don't know why it's not up to $8k already though, maybe give it some time or feature your listing.

If you do get anywhere near those figures for that site, that would be very good. If I were you I would just repeat what I did to get more cash.

I just paid $80 about 1 hour to put it on the home page.

I have 29 watchers and 6 questions so far. 1 day 19 hours to go.

The last two days are the bidding days ... you need to buy enhanced listing and you will get a lot of additional views that way and probably a lot more bids. A GNews site should go for quite a bit of money, particularly one that is making that kind of cash, if that is all profit and verifiable and transferable to new owners. I've seen GNews sites go for around $12K not making a dime, just because they were already included in Google News.

I'm more interested in your back story. How would you lose your mom? Is her house foreclosing or something? Medical bills?

If you're making $1600 per month with the site, it would be wise to keep the site rather than sell it for a quick $3K or less which probably all you're going to get.

If your mom needs money, depending on her needs, contact Social Services or you can take on a second job.

His back story is none of your business and it's pretty rude to ask. In addition, you obviously know nothing about selling websites that generate income or Google News sites in particular.

Google News sites without income have gone for $12-$18 K in the past and nothing has changed. They are quite valuable, as it is not that easy to get into Google News.

Took the words out of my mouth. There's a better pool of investors at EmpireFlippers with a lot less chance of being ripped off.

With 29 watchers you'll get a spike in bids later. People know the value, and like it was already mentioned, $16k is the least you should take for it. EmpireFlippers could get you 20-24x depending, so it's definitely worth checking out.

Well, even Empire Flippers writes about Thomas Smale on their blog:

Being website brokers in the buying and selling website space, we’ve got tons of connections and relationships with others doing the same. In episode 27, we had the pleasure of interviewing Thomas Smale from Flipping Enterprises, the #1 website broker on Flippa in 2011. In only a few years, he’s been able to climb through the ranks and make connections with buyers and sellers that has put his brokerage on top.

Thomas at FE runs a quality brokerage, no question. I finally got the chance to meet him a couple months back at a conference in Bangkok. :-)

Still, I think a site making $200 - $10K a month is better suited with us over at Empire Flippers. $10K - $50K+ per month and it's probably a toss-up between them and us. Over that amount and you'd want to start looking at Quiet Light as well.

In any event, we'd need to vet this site before listing to make sure it's a good fit for our audience. With most of the traffic from Kenya, we'd want to dig into both the earnings and traffic first in vetting.

Last note: I've seen plenty of Google News sites sell on Flippa and, a few months later, find themselves mysteriously removed from the Google News feed. Not great for buyers...

This is why I stopping doing web sites completely. Not just Google News, but really any thing to do with Google at all is completely at risk of going directly to zero at the whim of any one of thousands of Google people, with no warning, no explanation, no recourse, and no rule of law or venue to seek compensation for damages.

I do only real estate now. Buy, renovate, rent. I'm making 10 times more than I ever made online, and the money comes in like clockwork. Wake up wake up it's da first of da month. I just don't take on debt so I don't have to worry about market blowouts. Someone will always rent any piece of real estate, you just have to lower the price until you get a taker. Worst I can do is lose profits, ie just make less money. Never actually "lose" investment money.

Yes, there are risks, but there are also laws and precedents and there is legal liability to someone who would unilaterally debase the value of my real property, so it's not like someone can just wreck me at a whim in a way that wouldn't be covered by property insurance or lawsuits.

Google is evil, pure evil, and I just 100% stopped doing business with them across the board.

Any aspect of my investments / business that was at all dependent on traffic got sold off or shut down or at least cut off from additional investment or effort. Permanently. I will invest neither a nickel nor a minute in that direction ever again.

Well, there's two days left so he won't be paying yet. I would not commit to him. You'd be surprised what a difference having the reserve price met can make. This will be on the most active and then on ending soon tabs as well so it will get a lot of exposure and may get bids from people with a track record.

A G News site should never be listed publicly. Should always be listed with a private listing and people have to ask to see the listing. Google doesn't like to see the sites they accept change owners after being accepted, and there's good reason for that.

I too wondered about all that traffic from Kenya. Not sure why that would happen with a news site.

This is because it is also listed on another news aggregator and we have a facebook page with tons of Africans in it. It was a page I bought alongside another football/soccer site I used to own.

Update, I now have 8 bids ( 2 more after the last time ). $1200 is the highest so far. 38 people watching the auction with just 1 day, 3 hours to go.

      I am nervous.
Did you buy an enhanced listing to get it on the front page? If not, you really should.

I did yesterday. I checked your posts and saw where you advised about 3 people to buy the featured listing in the last 2 days. Unfortunately I had to pay $80. Seems they hiked their price.

        The auction URL https://flippa.com/5794085-google-ne...aking-1-500-mo

Yes, they hiked it and it's a steep price to pay, but this site is too important not to pay it, unfortunately.

I hope you have a good reserve on it. I'll take a look.

Are you still convinced I will get bids on it? I am getting worried. I stayed awake refreshing the page hoping for bids. I am desperate.

What's with the traffic numbers not going back before September? Same with Adsense revenue. That looks fishy. Why doesn't it go back if the site is 7 years old? Or is it a new GNews site but the domain is old?

I bought the site from someone else in a private deal who had also bought from flippa. I only bought it in October.

Yeah, I see that now. At least it's a good reason for not having the data prior to September. Shame you couldn't hold onto this longer.

With a reserve on it, I would have made the auction at least 15 days, maybe a month. When a site has no reserve, it starts a feeding frenzy of bidding, but you run the grave risk of letting the site go way under value.

If this ends without meeting the reserve, I think you still get a new listing at half price. Relist it for a month and buy the front page on the last two days.

It's also recommended to write daily for a news site. A couple of articles per month is way low and you run the risk of being delisted by Google News. They like to see fresh news daily. That would also bump up your daily Adsense and you could post the screenshots of increased daily Adsense revenue and traffic as well.

That would also help to get people commenting, which puts you on the Most Active tab on Flippa to get extra views.

Ok ... so how long have you owned it? I read the description now and see that you purchased it on Flippa.

Yes, I'm fairly convinced that it will go higher as long as you can satisfy bidders who want income and traffic proof.

Traffic is really a no brainer with a news site. Google provides the traffic.

The site got over 900,000 views last month ( November ), over $1900 in revenue.

It's not a matter of it selling. I've never seen a Google News site that didn't sell. On Flippa, I've seen sites go for way under value. A broker can normally get you a higher multiple of income for the site. Flippa often averages maybe 6 times monthly income rather than 15 times monthly income ... not sure about that higher multiple, but you get the idea.

Thomas Smale is a broker who has an account on WF and would be able to get you the maximum for this site. A broker's fees are higher than Flippa, but the selling price is way higher, so it's worth it.

Thanks for your help. I have done alot of researches. I have put bidders who have at least $1,000 in transaction ( 13k, 7k, 7k, 9k ) on auto approved while the other two with just $105 and $0.00 transaction on manual approval.

          Is this right?

Yeah, that's probably the best way to vet bidders ... by their previous transactions. I'm always suspicious of brand new members who are bidding on my sites.

22 hours to go. The site now has 10 bids. Highest is 1500 so far. The highest bid seems to be an auto bid from someone who had asked me questions before. She bought a gambling site which we both agreed will be good for my site.

Maybe it will sell after all.

Well, you've doubled that now with 14 hrs to go and it's likely the auction will get automatically extended when people bid in the last hour. That's when it gets tense and exciting to watch. I'm keeping my eye on it and wish you luck with it. I want to see the serious bidders start putting their money where their mouth is, so to speak.

I bought the site for $6000. It was an abandoned site with no revenue.

It now has 21 bids. Almost X4 the initial 6 bids. It is now in the most active section. I hope you are right and people start bidding on the site in the last few hours.

Someone wrote me privately. He seems keen on the site. But he is a new user.

He can't continue bidding because according to him paypal needs to verify his card which is taking some time.

He said he can't bid above $4900. The other person is also very keen but I am afraid she will simply stop bidding if there is no competition.

I have not slept for the last 4 days watching this auction. I hope it is worth it in the end.

Don't take those private deals. You shouldn't deal with a Paypal user with unverified account. The person who is qualified to buy this site, will and should put their bid in and bid to win.

You shouldn't take less than $16K for this site and if you ignore this advice and go with a private offer, please do not do it via Paypal. Tell them it is escrow or get lost.

Before you commit to a private deal, at least pm Thomas Smale and get his advice. You shouldn't give this site away and that could happen with some of these con artists on Flippa who try to rip you off.

No ... the no bids wouldn't discourage anyone really. Google Adsense sites are hot on Flippa and the News sites are even hotter. Your highest bidder is listed as NEW. That's a red flag to me.

Your most qualified bidder has done $9.68K in business on Flippa but has stopped bidding at this time.

Talk to Thomas and see what he thinks about the person offering a private deal and about the site and auction in general, but whatever you do, don't sell this site outside of Escrow.

Everything is possible and I've had a lot of bidding in the last hour. Once the site is on the Most Active and Ending Soon tabs, you get a whole lot of exposure. It would be great if a serious buyer, and by serious I mean, one that is not New and one that knows the value of this site, started bidding. Fortunately, the "New" high bidder hasn't broken through the reserve price so you are under no obligation to sell it to him.

3 people seem serious. One has a gambling site and this my site goes well with it. The other a fantasy football site which goes with it as well.

The other is a gambler himself ( I am not mind ). I think it will sell outside flippa.

I wonder why, if they are serious that they aren't bidding up to the amount they say they are willing to pay. That's what I meant by serious bidder. Scammers often sound genuine and have all kinds of reasons why they can't use escrow, why they don't want to bid, etc. Be careful.

I wrote Thomas, no reply. Like you rightly said, the people who were interested are scammers.

I am happy I was able to avoid been scammed. I relisted the site. Lots of bids this time but still wait below reserve price.

Someone who is also new is very interested but like before, he could be a scam.

Someone who is also new is very interested but like before, he could be a scam.
Glad you avoided the scammers. Keep that up. A totally new account with no feedback is suspect. I've been watching the auction, so I was notified when it was relisted.

96 people watching the auction. 53 from the first listing. Thats 43 new people watching the auction. Do you think I may have a better chance especially with so many bids.

Sadly from new accounts too but one a Philipo has been asking lots of questions and seems interested but trying to avoid a scam which I understand.

I wonder why my own site is not selling, I see sites making way less money selling for more, many Google news sites making zero money sold for at least $4,500. How come mine is different?

That's a good question because I've seen numerous Google News sites that didn't make a dime, or very little, sell for around $8K. I don't know the answer ... but above all else, do not agree to any transaction outside of escrow, or you could end up with no site and no money.

Since you have so many new watchers and bids, maybe this time, the right person is watching. Nothing will happen until the last day either way.

Don't do private deals, especially with unverified PayPal accounts. That's why Flippa sucks so bad -- so sketchy there sometimes.

There's more than enough buyers to not deal with shadiness. Buyers that have cash (or credit) ready and want as smooth a sale as you do.

People will bid up a profitable site. If it doesn't cross 10k I'll be shocked.

Didn't see you mention that dude earlier Suzanne, apologies. ;D I'd stop the auction and hit him up, if I was the OP

I would recommend using EmpireFlippers. Have sold a couple of websites for 20x monthly profit this year and really like the way they work. of course %15 is a very high commission, however, they managed to find a buyer for my project in less than a week. With Flippa, I managed to sell only for 14-15x monthly profit =(

I have 2 offers. One for $13999 another for $12999. If they agree to do best via escrow, I may go with them if the auction doesn't end well.

The site made over $1900 this month.

Just wanted to add that if you sell this privately, Flippa will still charge you for the success fee, if the domain changes hands within a month I believe it is. They assume that the sale was due to the exposure from the auction and they automatically bill you for it.

Talk to Thomas before you commit to anyone.

I've seen alot of low quality no-traffic no-sales pages on Flippa recently. Are they actually worth the investment?

The owners usually promise a whole lot, but if they never had any traffic or sales it's impossible to know if what they say is true.

Well, that isn't really relevant to a Google News Site that made $1800 last month and gets tons of traffic from Google News.

Someone bid $7500 on the auction just now. He bid $4000 earlier and has been asking tons of questions as well. He wants to buy it at $11999.

You need to make him make it official with a bid. I've had lots of people pm me and make private offers. I always told them to make it official with a bid. Once that is done, you may even get higher bids. Don't make a commitment to him. If he wants the site and isn't a scammer, he should have no problem going the official route.

If the reserve is higher than the amount he wants to pay, you can offer to lower the reserve to meet that bid just before the end of the auction. I've done that before, so he could officially win it at the auction's end.

I've even reduced the time of the auction and lowered the reserve so someone with a reasonable offer could buy it, but always through Flippa. If you do private, Flippa won't back you up if things go wrong.

I see the auction is being "not met reserve".

Honestly, if you're making almost 2k/mo and the offers are in the 7-10k range, don't sell the site.

You never said why the money is needed fast, but in the real world, very few people who need 10k for emergency services are unwilling to take it 2k at a time.... and everything else is not really an emergency and can wait a few months.

What do you mean you agreed to a deal? A second bidder with some feedback has now bid the highest bid. That's a good thing. With 11 hours to go and reserve met, it's likely you will get more bids as it gets closer to closing.

Thanks. But he is yet to write me. Good a thing the other buyer is willing to buy it and wants it done via escrow which protects the two of us.

He has 3 days. If you sell the site to someone else before that time is up, you will be banned from ever using Flippa again. It's not unusual when people make a large purchase to be arranging the money.

It's barely been 24 hrs. Give him the time he needs to get his money together. After 3 days, you are no longer obligated to sell it to him.

He was a fraud. I have hit depressed ever since. I am discussing the sale with someone else, if it doesn't succeed, I will relist. Any thought on if it is okay if I list next week? Two days after Christmas.

Will the festivity affect the auction?

That's two in a row now. Unbelievable. The holidays are never good for selling much except Christmas stuff. Personally, I would wait until after New Year, but at least until after Christmas.
