Add background music to VSL or not?

Hi there,

I was thinking of adding some background music to my VSL or do you think it would be too distracting?

Thanks,

Once the music is not distracting it would work just fine. There is a reason
why movies use sound tracks. Your challenge will be to get the music to
match the mood of the copy.

  • I think it depends on the music you use

Here's one example where it can be quite effective:

Look at the most commercially successful websites. Does Amazon play music automatically? Does Facebook? Does Ebay? Does Google? What about Yahoo, or IMDB? The answer in all cases is no. Why? Because they’ve done their research (they can afford to, after all). And their research told them it was a bad idea. Isn’t it great that you can benefit from this research without paying for it? Moreover, There is no music that all of your visitors will like. Not everyone likes Mozart, not everyone likes Metallica, and relatively few people like elevator ambient background music. For every visitor that comes to your site and thinks “cool” there will be at least one who will think “ick!” and never return.

There's many facts why you shouldn't put music on your website, I could write here for hours!

    So, the answer is NO!

I don't think the question was about putting music on a website? That would be distracting and an annoyance, an intrusion.

I think music in a VSL should work fine and i've seen many that do use it effectively but I think it really does need to enhance what you are saying on screen. As soon as it becomes a focus, its not doing its job. Most i've witnessed are gentle uplifting background pieces just enchanting what is said.

Its also good because most people are used to hearing music over that kind of video and in some circumstances not having it would draw attention to the fact that its not there.

I guess one aspect of putting an effective video together is not going to magically make videos look good. Everything has to work together and decisions need to be made as to what is suitable for the project and message of the video.

Actually more than 60% people will choose the background Music. But you must use the good & relative background music. So you need to careful to choose the music. Thanks for your advance.

Having music in a VSL could be bad or good it really depends on how it is edited and how it meshes with the topic/video. You obviously want to have the sound quality as good as it can be and to go along with that a HD video or something similar.

    C'mon guys, be wise.

A visitor might be listening to a quiet classical CD using their PC with headphones. They click to your site, which then adds a hip-hop beat to the mix at four times the volume, making their ears bleed. Hitting the back button and remembering your site name takes less time than finding your wierd-looking "stop" or "pause" button. You'll never see that visitor again.

    Or.

Someone may be using their laptop in an open-plan office without headphones, and may have forgotten to mute the sound. Your site may be relevant to their needs, but if the music that suddenly blares out embarrasses them or annoys their colleagues (or worse still their boss), you can bet they won't visit again or recommend you to others.

    Or.

With tabbed browsing, it's often convenient to middle-click several search engine results and then flick through them. If your site is one of those results, and it starts playing music, and your visitor doesn't want that music, they have to flick through the tabs until they work out which site is offending them. You can bet they'll close that tab. And imagine what happens if two of the websites they clicked start playing music - a horrible cacophany that will have your visitor reaching for their browser's "Exit" button.

Very good advice and I completely agree!

But am I missing something? This was not the question. The question was about placing music in a promotional video, video sales letter etc.

My opinion is that these should be triggered by the user and not play automatically which could be very annoying.

Having music or someone talk automatically upon entering a website is in my opinion an intrusion and I hate those pop up adverts which start a vid automatically with some cheesy music with some tanned looking fat guy in front of a green screen with an obviously placed background of a city view saying "Lucky You! You have just found the 100% done for you free money system, an exclusive club of new millionaires"

Suffice to say, those get closed off fast!
