Do you make your own internet marketing-related discoveries?

I know us marketers know a handful of marketing tips and tactics to grow our business. By reading some of those, we get to learn. But with so much information already available to us, do you still try to make your own discoveries or do you simply rely on what's already known and available out there?

Case in point. For example, let's say you want to generate traffic to your new site/blog. So you write guest posts, pay for traffic, etc. But do you still try to experiment with new things and make new discoveries that probably nobody has done before?

The reason why I'm asking is because our time on a daily basis is certainly limited. But we all want to expand our business and make it grow as much as possible. But with so many tactics out there, and with limited time, I wonder if successful marketers still have the time to try new things on their own.

As the world is growing and new things are being discovered day by day..... people want to have money and have it in short time.. in my opinion,,, i think that people don't have time for discovering new things instead they want to have which can be solved easily and these things provide them beneift. for discovering new tactics and things one should have enough money that he won't need money on urgent basis.......

I still come to the Warrior Forum every week and have for over 13 years. I do this more to read and learn then I do to actually post. As an industry Internet marketing has always interested me, so coming here, as well as a few other sources comes natural to me.

For the most part I agree. But there is definitely things I have done, like with Email Copy, that no one is doing or at least that I have seen.

Thinking outside the box on a constant basis can result in finding new profitable things that are truly a "discovery"

I'm constantly looking for new ways that work or methods that I've overlooked that can be profitable. If you're not always looking to get better in pretty much anything you will be left behind

    That is a great question and one of the things that came to mind first are the fallacies and Myths that surround Successful Internet Marketing;

One of the things that I see almost every day is this idea that the best way to succeed in online marketing is to copy, what others are doing...

It sort of makes you wonder why do people do that?

I saw a product being marketed in the WSO section recently, the main sales premise was that

"Professionals" were paying more than $100 bucks a click for leads.

At first I thought hey that sounds interesting, but the more I continued to think about it, the more I realized that there may indeed be some that are paying for clicks at a higher than normal rate, but are there so many of them out there that I could as the sales page seems to promise, make money selling services to those people who were paying big bucks for clicks?

The answer is NO you can't, now of course there are always exceptions, but on the whole, the answer is going to be no 400 times and yes once.

Are you really going to go out and send out 400 emails, or call 400 people to get one lead?

Probably not, its just common sense because most people are not going to invest that much labor to get what might or might not be a paying lead.

So, yes, if you want to really be productive and successful you have to think "Outside the Box"

If your not doing that then you might be spending a lot more time Not being productive.

    Yes totally.

Usually I just stumble across them by accident, and lots of others do the same.

The most important thing however, is CHOOSING TO ACT UPON YOUR DISCOVERIES.

I think that for the first 1-2 years in IM you are learning.

Once you reach a level of mastery and have sucked up all the basics can you move onto discovering you own stuff. E.g. I have only just started learning new original tricks and have been in the game for 2.5 years.

And agree with Luke, there's a difference between finding a new trick and acting upon it...

    So what's the alternative?

Just blindly keep using the same "tips and tactics" whether or not they're working for you because (a) they worked once in the past (b) you either read about them in some so-called guru's "information product" or (c) because some random person told you to do it on an internet forum?

Everything about business -- especially new businesses -- comes down to experimentation, learning and adjustment. You almost never get it right the first time.

But your "discoveries" don't have to be big, wide-reaching or even new. Sometimes it's the smallest things that can make the biggest impact: things like changing the aspect-ratios of images, tweaking the look of your sales pages to make it easier for your customers to find the information they're looking for, figuring out what sort of subject lines your email subscribers respond to. These are often things that either nobody thinks are worth writing about or the things nobody can write about because they're things that change quickly and really depend on the niche you're operating in and the types of customers you have.

You learn as you go along. You always discover new things.

For example, when you get into the marketing aspect, you learn pretty fast what is working for you and what isn't. This happens all the time.

If you're not studying, experimenting, learning and trying new things your business is going to stagnate and suffer.

Online marketing is an ever-changing industry and you can't just "set and forget" your business system.

What you're not considering is this:

It doesn't matter if what you discover is brand-new or not. If you haven't done that thing before, it's brand new to you!

Every business owner worth his salt is constantly on the look-out for new ideas, selling systems, new prospects, markets, and things to sell.

It's beneficial to discover new ways to get traffic but it's best to find something that actually works and stick with it.

I make new discoveries constantly - new ways to build links, new "vision" that allows me to see through bullshit, and new ways to promote more people, tweak my site, etc. And I've been at it for almost 2 years now, and have experience writing sales copy and tweaking websites.

The last part of the puzzle for me was SEO and I've gotten it down pretty good the last year or so. Money? It's steadily building and I've got my own secret sauces of how to build up new and better sites to make more. I'm making a close to full time income.

I wouldn't dream of selling my methods as a WSO for everyone to copy, but perhaps my mindset may change in the future.
