How Do You Explain "Online Stuff" To Your Family Members?

Honestly, this question has probably been asked a dozen times this year alone...
What does it matter anyway, unless you're still living with your parents and earning nada online then obviously they would think you're wasting your time...

I remember the time when I bumped into an acquaintance at a bank. She asked me where I worked. I told her that I work from home. She said, "Oh, that's good. Your mom could use some help with the household chores." I replied, "No, I earn a full-time income from the internet. I write articles. I don't have to go to an office." Thinking that I was kidding, she laughed and went on her way.

Another story: When I tried to convince a friend to try working from home, her mother reacted quite negatively. She thought that I was trying to pull off a scam. Today, the mom is grateful because her daughter, who is a college dropout, earns five times her salary as a public school teacher. My friend works online as a chat and email support specialist.

This is a well known "problem". It seems that I am the only one that loves and understands the power of internet marketing, so my wife will never understand it. That doesn't matter though, as long as I bring in some money she's happy.
Other family has zero interest and understanding of it at all, so I just don't talk about it when they are around....it's actually frustrating trying to explain affiliate marketing and all that to people that don't have a clue!

I explain to people that online marketing is very similar to offline marketing - just the scale and potential are a lot better. Online, a marketer can make hundreds or thousands of sales without getting out of his chair. Offline, you'd need to have a store front, etc.

There are obvious differences, of course, but the essential ideas are the same.

In affiliate marketing, I tell people: There are all of these companies or vendors who need sales for their products and will pay people to help them get sales. That's it.

That's a perhaps, simplistic view, but that's one way to describe it.

I had the same problem as well. After I started getting checks in the mail and after I sold one of the first websites I created for $500, the questions stopped.

Still, from time to time, depending if I actually care if a particular person "understands" or not, I would explain it by asking them a couple of questions to activate their brain cells, such as :

"Do you watch T.V. ? Do you see commercials on T.V. ? - Why do you think there are commercials on television ?"

"Have you ever seen ads in magazines or newspapers ? - Why do you think there are advertisements in magazines and newspapers ?"

"Have you ever heard of people selling things like Avon products, Tupperware, etc. and making a commission on every product they sell ? "

This usually begins their awakening that selling things online is not really all that much different, just a more recent way of promoting and selling things.

I actually thought my mother how to make a Udemy course. She already made like $200 and got her very excited. That seemed to do it.

But normally I just explain with offline examples. The door to door salesman is a perfect example of affiliate marketing, except you do not work for the company and only get the commission out of sales (and not a base salary as well).

When I am with friends and family we do not talk about IM. I do not give a crap about their jobs and they really do not care about mine.

If the subject does come up I just say I do well with ebay. I buy low and sell high. I don't actually sell on ebay but it puts and end to something I don;t want to talk about

I tell them I sell software online and have affiliates that sell for me as well. My software creates landing pages for affiliates and business owerns, anyone who wants to create leads

I basically confuse the hell out of them to the point they give up asking.

I don't tell them anything. My wife and mom are the only one's who know what I do. Everyone else is just a 'civilian' and doesn't need to know.

Even when I was new and didn't have any results to show for my effort and time, no one in my family could ever talk me out of what I wanted to do.

You have got to make up your own mind and forget about trying to convince your father or anyone else. Yes I love my Dad but wouldn't need his 'blessing' in order to succeed online.

If you're serous and believe in your own vision, then that's the only person you need to convince.

Do what Robert said above...

Tell them it's porn (just to get him off your back).

One more thing...

Even if your father sees you make a lot of income in the future, this still doesn't mean that he'll agree with how you make it.
