Who has set up a self hosted wordpres site in the last few days?

If you have can you do me a favour and check if they are nofollow links all over it?

I posted this in the web design section but realised it is happening on all my installs that are new (old sites unaffected)so thought I'd see if it was for anyone else. I install the wordpress via fantastico (using hostgator reseller package) and ALL links, on default theme and anything else I install, are nofollow. Even with no plgins (meta-robot doesnt help either).

I found it initially for one site, uninstalled everything (including all hosting) then reset it up and was still the same, have since tested on two domains I had laying around and having the same problems on newly installed wordpress.

Hostgator insist its not them and that if its happening then it is at wordpress end, them setting defaults.

Has this happened to anyone else in the last few days? How do I get around it?

(nofollow told by my SEObook plugin - one of the sites is Techix Engineering Recruitment if you want to check)

Did you check the privacy settings?

I just recently discovered that all my new installs have the privacy set to block search engines which I think makes everything nofollow. I never had to go in and do anything to this setting before, but now I need to set it to allow search engines.

Lee, hero - thanks for that! Never even knew that was there before - spent ages backing up, deleting and moving things, wish I'd asked here earlier!

Nail on the head, good stuff!

It's set to private by default now. You can't add your ping list until you change that setting.

Good for when your setting up - annoying if you forget

I'd make sure to check any blogs you update as well. Wouldn't be happy if my newly upgraded blog went to "private".

I thought maybe it was just me, because I can't believe that it would default to blocking search engines!

There I was happily making blogs and selling them to people and they all were set to block the search engines!

I might not have noticed either, but one of my customers emailed me and wanted to know when he should change the privacy settings to allow search engines! I went back and checked and all the blogs I made for the last 2 weeks were set to block them.

I had to go into each one (they had already been purchased!) and change the setting, then email all my customers about it - how embarrassing is that?

I spent quite a lot of time trying to get my new wp sites indexed, but nothing.
I got kind of frustrated, checking in google all the time, pinging at pingler.com (Which usually gets my sites indexed in a few hours), I even thought google had slapped me for some reason!

Then I randomly found out while creating a new site, so that's a good thing to know!

I cannot believe this. I spent the entire day going through my code and losing it, wondering why I couldn't get my site on the run and indexed. I even had hostgator online with me - 2 techs trying to figure out what the deal was!!! Whew, thank God I came across this post. Wall Major thanks for bringing this up!

And btw yeah, why in bloody hell would wordpress do that? Frikin ridiculous.

At least I'm breathing a sigh of relief now.

      WOW!

Thank you - I didn't even know that setting existed. Seems some of my sites have it to block search engines. I can't believe that is a default setting.

It IS a default setting - but according to the WordPress trac, it wasn't intentional. Standard behavior for the last 3 years has been to have the box checked automatically. Hopefully it will get changed back to original behavior in the next release.

Yes, I know, thanks. I didn't even have time to submit a patch after I opened the ticket. Westi beat me to it. Change is committed to 2.8.5 release.

It was a major flaw, it had to be corrected asap. Imagine how many people are hitting their head asking

"WHY? Why isn't my site indexed???????????"

This is precisely why I don't upgrade to the very latest Wordpress all the time. I don't want to be a continual BETA TESTER

I am with you on that one, Paul. I always give new releases and chance to work some of the kinks out before I dive in. Beta is not always better.

Go thing Wordpress is on this thing. Imagine not wanting to have your site found by search engines. Well, if you are a BF'er...
