Starting a blog - doing it right

Hi Folks,

Finally settled on a plan and requesting some feedback.

Me and a business parter want to start a blog around a subject that we know a lot about. It's going to be focussed on teaching people about a certain subject that is in high demand lately.

Idea is as follows:

Start a blog
Post excerpts on a FB page
Promote FB page + FB adds
Eventually when there is a flow of traffic start building an email list
Sell a few really great Ebooks on this subject also

Speaking about SEO - We were planning in following just the basic SEO rules and focus on providing quality content published on a very regular basis. Having things interlinked with each other and place a good deal of focus on getting traffic from Facebook.

Will this be enough to make this all successful? Are we missing anything here?

Much appreciated,
Walter

It seems like you have a good plan set up. Keeping your blog filled with High Quality Content and the use of Facebook and other Social Media Sites is a good starting place. I think that you should also create back links, check out related websites, forums, and blogs. Comment something substantial and related to the content. I think you are off to the right start and will pick up other tips and tricks to help you out along the way. Good luck to you

At least this is a very good start if you stick to that plan thoroughly. Moreover, I suggest you create a community and membership site around your topic/niche of choice.

Talking about SEO a minimum implementation is required but TOP QUALITY CONTENT is even more important. Indeed, nowadays real SEO is Content Marketing!

About building a list, you should not wait for a "flow of traffic" to start building a list, you must implement this right from the beginning as this is one of the most important asset of ANY online business.

As NetMan already pointed out, you should set up your autoresponder and begin building a list from the very beginning. You need to test different messages and CTAs with these early subscribers before you get that "flowing" traffic.

Don't forget video and email marketing. Depending on your niche, try social sharing networks, too.

Go ahead, here are a few things to think about (I wish I knew this when I started out)..

    1) Treat it lika a business! It's okay if you started your blog because you love to write about stuff you know, but if you're waiting on your blog to make you rich, it won't. Because it's a blog and not a business, the vast majority makes less than $3.50 per day.

    2) Test, test and test some more.. What your looking for are these three big metrics that really matter: unique visitors, total pageviews and average time on page. try a new design, fonts, add more pics, make it messy etc etc... I’m a big believer in testing BIG!

    3) Do we really need more information, don´t we already have everything we need online these days? Think about it... Maybe what the world needs (and values) is a trusted authority blog or site who will organize and aggregate all the GREAT information that’s actually worth reading into one place like: The Huffington Post, The Drudge Report, Forbes, Bloomberg, and other now HUGE sites..

    Good Luck!

Following on from what NetMan says, building a community is very important, especially on your Facebook page where likes, comments and shares will make a big difference to your reach.

I also agree with starting a mailing list as soon as possible.

As a web designer I completely agree with web lover. You have to consider the design before you even start generating content for the website. Something to consider, will members be able to register on the website to access their exclusive content or will it be open to everyone interested in learning more about your chosen topic.

With regards to the email newsletter. I agree with everyone who said you should implement the newsletter immediately. You don't want to implement it a few moths later because its not guaranteed the people who visited your website during the early phase will ever return to the website. A newsletter will ensure that you're able to keep the percentage of returning visitors high.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Yep and email marketing is dead

Anyway, blog plan sounds good. It will take time. Be prepared to put a lot of time and work in without seeing a whole lot of results in the beginning

You don't have to work HARD. You have to work SMART. Once you master paid ads and you are getting good conversions, you can scale things up and make even more money.

You also need to include DERIVATIVE MEDIA in the mix

    How? What?

Turn your posts into videos and pictures and promote the heck out of them on Youtube, Pinterest, and social media sites.

Create content, create derivative content from that content, and SHARE, SHARE, SHARE.

It is really good idea, that you are going to start in that field where are you rally expert. Most of the people failed in their life due to wrong decision. If you start that niche, I am sure you will gain within a short time. Thanks for taking a good decision.

Do not forget you will not be getting buyers from Facebook traffic. Facebook traffic are more or less bullshit traffic. I will suggest you to concentrate on your main keywords and start to rank them high in Google as organic traffic from Google will bring you more sales. People look to buy from Google, not from Facebook.

    Kind regards,

I agree that design is highly important but its not the start of the process.

The #1 thing is content. You want to sell you have to show you know what you're doing & provide value. I believe that if you just run traffic to an offer theres an 80% chance you'll bomb.

ThriveTheme is enough to make a good looking site. Save your money on advertising & a custom theme till you produce some high quality content people will love & share.

I also agree that you need to start building a list from day 0! No list No money. You could be missing out on thousands or tens of thousands.

Sure, your traffic flow will be low at the start so i hear what you're saying. But, it really doesn't cost or take much to have an email list & do emailing 3-4 times per week.

    Good luck!

Enough to start, pretty well thought out plan. Read this thread, but most importantly....START.

Whatever you are missing can be added as you go, but even a day's delay could be deadly. If you and partner have the expertise, and there is a market who wants/needs it...

then you need to be a "Drummer Hoff" and go ahead and "fire it off" (kids book).

I think your thinking is good, some of the better ideas we've seen here, good luck but your potential customers are going somewhere else today...

Good plan but you need to include YouTube videos and Google Plus in that.

Google Plus is real important for SEO now and YouTube videos often rank much more easily for keywords than websites. Then add a link to your blog from the video.

Sure, there are people who earn a nice income from their blogs. However, for the most part, I don't see blogs as a solid business model.

I see blogs as a tool for generating traffic, creating authority, encouraging interaction, and fostering a social presence.

"Blogging as a business" just doesn't work as well as it did a few years ago.

That's not to say that it doesn't still work, or can't work for you, but IMO a blog works best to help build a business...rather than as a business itself.

I've personally had success by making in-article CTA as you would see from my blog if you happen to visit it. The general rule for any blog's success is traffic, so also go parallely for paid traffic which you can get some times for free from certain services. There are web services that give free ppc coupons in google and bing to buy a website with them, so start small with paid traffic as well in your marketing strategy.

Blogging to earn money is a hard thing to do but since your goal is to sell your ebooks, then I do not see why your plan wouldn't work. Just don't give up! It can take some time and a lot of time investment.

Agreed, a blog is really just one more channel to sell, not a business in and of itself.

Ideally you need to sell your own product or service. A good "how to" eBook is a start.

Do this from day 1 when you start your blog. Have a sign up form on the side of your blog, plus in the form of a hover ad also. Selling ebooks is a good idea too if they're high quality. You can promote it on your blog, or simply just promote and link to it from your email newsletter.
