VPS - Virtual Private Servers?

Hi All,

While I have been considering switching from HostGator's "Shared Business Plan" to WiredTree's "SSD Virtual Private Servers" - I'm a bit *unclear* as to the tech requirements...

For example, most VPS hosting seems to "include" reseller rights, and provides customer service to both me, and my clientele... I presume.

However, if I create a membership that offers "free hosting" so each member can access their own Cpanel... Is VPS a viable solution?

Yeah, I can GOOGLE it, but I am more interested in hearing from marketers who have experience with hosting a membership that includes "free hosting access" as part of the monthly fee or annually paid members.

Is it worth the extra money?

And, will this enable me to host multiple sites of my own (other product specific domains as well as my membership offerings?

To date, I have 17 domains (not all are developed) but up until now the ones that are, we hosted as "add on" domains and are essentially "sub domains" created from my root "main" domain.

Does having my own VPS allow my domains to "stand alone" as independently hosted sites?

Lastly, I plan to start building soon with http://WiredTree.com and their $55 per month SSD VPS... And drop HostGator altogether!

Any insight... Greatly appreciated, really don't know diddle about hosting other than using FTP, and some basic Cpanel actions.

Thanks,
Art

    Hi art72,

I guess the answer to your question is "it depends".

I presume you know from a technical standpoint what a VPS is. If you dont the best way to describe it is that you get a guarenteed slice of the resources of the real physical server that the Virtual Machine is running on. Now what services any particular hosting company chooses to provide on that slice of the server is up to them. They may provide something like DirectAdmin which has 3 levels of user. An owner who can sell resourses to resellers who in turn can sell to customers. I think this is the type of thing that you may be after. Any site that that is created is created as a stand alone site and not as a sub-site like in hostgaters cpanel service.

The other consideration is the power of the VPS that you are renting. Don't forget that a VPS is already just part of a server and then you could go dividing it up again even more, if any of the sites are heavy traffic then you could start to degrade the service to all the sites, so pay consideration to the total traffic you are expecting.

You may want to consider a cheaper more powerful dedicated server where you get all the resources of the machine. If you want to go this route a can recommend Kimsufi who I have used previously for many years. They are both exceptionally cheap and have fantastic unlimited bandwith to the internet.

I use WiredTree VPS and anything you can do with a reseller account, you can do with your VPS plus more. Just remember, as previously mentioned, you won't have unlimited everything like you do with your Hostgator account. If you or your clients consume all your resources, RAM, disk space, bandwidth etc., you'll have to upgrade.

I've ran SEO software (GSA Search Engine Ranker) on a Virtual Private Server but have never used a VPS to host a domain.

I have 10 domains under one Host Gator account and haven't had any problems whatsoever. I would stick with Host Gator

I've also heard good things about WP Engine.

I have both a dedicated server and a VPS at WiredTree. The hardcore, resource-intensive businesses go on the dedicated, and the lighter sites (as well as my personal pet projects) go on the VPS.

The answer to your question is yes - you will get a WHM account on your VPS, and every domain you set up gets its own cPanel access.

As much as I love Wiredtree, I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the VPS. I had two WP sites set up on it - one was an ecommerce site and the other a directory. The performance on them was below par. When I moved them to my dedicated server, things picked up dramatically.

Thanks for all the above responses.

After spending several hours in the Hosting offer section of the forum, I am considering starting with a reseller account from SkyNet as they seem to be offering a ton more value for $34.95 per month.

While I am still awaiting a response, I am assuming as a reseller... I can host my domains independently, and still use their white label help desk should I decide to venture into offering hosting as a reseller, or grant access to my (future) private members.

Honestly, I am rather intimidated trying to figure out "What" company to purchase from, as they all have perks...

Unfortunately, after reading the responses above, I am more inclined to steer clear of the VPS option, and am now looking into either "reseller packages" or a "dedicated server" - all-in-all... I will likely spent countless hours trying to learn all the different applications being offered.

Clearly, I could probable stick with a shared server, as Tyronne mentioned, but I am working on something whereby, I currently have 17 domains, all in various niches, and feel they should be "independent" of one another for a multitude of reasons.

And, I really would like to find a solution to keep my sites 'separated' whereby, I can either; flip or sell them off easily afterwards, or simply grant someone else (like a VA) access to a specific site to manage it (rather than keep all my eggs in one basket) - should my future ambitions shift towards bigger ideas.

Again... I appreciate all the responses, and I have been in both the review section, as well as the Hosting sub-forum, and all that is doing is overwhelming me to question; "Are any reviews real anymore?" or just "resellers & affiliates" pushing the dope?

    Thanks,

    Art

I've recently been doing a lot of the same research. Make sure the host you decide on provides tech support for your customers if you decide to go that route. Some do, some don't.
