Opt in gifts - how much does the content matter for the conversion later?

Hi,
I have used a free opt-in gift one time before and it worked well so I didn't test much weather it would affect conversion if I changed the content of it.

What I mean is...

Volume (PDF 10 page report vs 50 page report, 10 min audio vs 30 min audio)
Quality ("basically a sales talk" vs "can be sold on it's own")
Format (audio, video, PDF, email "lessons" etc. or a combination of them)

I'm not talking about what would be a good incentive to opt in, but rather what motivates them to actually buy your product or visit the sales page after they receive the gift.

For example, if the quality is too good then they may just get satisfied only by the gift, or if it's too much (audio/pdf is too long, there are many of them etc.) they might stop reading/listening in the middle and forget about it.

Do they not matter much as long as you send newsletters/autoresponder with good copy later etc.?

Thanks!

My niche in IM is that I teach marketers and businesses (online and offline) how to market with email.

With the very high paying clients I also consult them. I teach the same thing to everyone. Always over deliver!!!

As an example: If you were to opt into my email marketing mailing list (you can't at the moment as I'm revamping the lead capture page after additional testing), you'd get a great PDF in which I really do share the "secrets" of how to make as much money as you desire.

In this PDF I tell them the real deal and I way over deliver. I then give them a 12 week IM course for free. One section per week with the least being 19 pages for a week and the most 63 pages for a week.

I don't even attempt to sell them anything for the first 10 days. Instead I build the relationship with them. I send them daily blog posts where I share real information each day for free.

Now, let me tell you. When I do offer them a product that they need, they buy it like crazy.

I have very few unsubscribes, I have people emailing their friends telling them to join my list.

So, don't be afraid to over deliver.

Frank Kern did it with Mass Control and made millions.

Thank you so much for your advice! Not to change the topic, but I always worry about overlap in my free gift and actual products. Should I not care about it? I mean, if you are a consultant or something you can give all the info, but if you are selling something then there will be some overlap - and the more you give it free, the less "new" information in the product. (?)

I agree with Enfusia, Always over deliver. You would be surprised how much you can make from a small list really. You will also stand out from every other marketers. I have even had subscribers email ME saying they must have missed an email because they didn't get one yesterday lol.

Great Idea on the 12 week course Enfusia! You can easily create a great optin gift with that in any niche!

Hi James, good to see you again.

Yeah, I give them their eBook and then as a bonus I give them a 12 week course. It cut's unsubscribes way down. Keeps people opening those emails too. Plus, it adds a ton of value.

What you end up doing is becoming so valuable to them that they wouldn't unsubscribe even if you told them to.

Yeah I understand about people asking if they missed one. I've received many Christmas cards from the people on my list and more are coming in.

That's the ticket. Become so valuable to them that if you retired they'd cry.

Then, only recommend super high quality products. Never recommend anything you wouldn't or don't personally use.

Offer a level 2 100% money back guarantee. If they buy your recommendation and the vendor doesn't honor the 30 day refund, you'll pay them out of your own pocket.

I've never had to do it even once. But man, do customers love it.

Ok, I better shut up. I'm giving you all of my secrets.

Yeah Patrick this is almost exactly what I have done for last couple of years. It really works effectively. Mine is a 30 day E course split up every other day. With initial download of a PDF 'how to' report

I think it is a really good primer to let people know they will be getting a quality e-book as well as expecting a follow up Course with emails to come..

I think if you just offer an e book some prospects wonder why does this guy keep sending me emails when I just wanted this e book.

So with a combo of e-book and course you are qualifying your leads and setting initial expectations of your prospects to receive MORE in the future !!

Robert, I agree 100%. What your doing is making yourself valuable.

I had a friend who was worried about getting laid off from her corp. i told her make yourself valuable. She did. Most everyone in her division has come and gone a couple times over. She's still there.

Our tactics that you and I use are pretty much what I teach. Plus, a whole lot more as you well know. Because there's a lot more to it.

Great advice! its the truth man. I also like to add a bonuses that compliments the offer aswell . Also had great success with offering a 1-1 coaching session (email or Skype) when they purchase my offer recommendation to really over deliver. This boosts conversions like crazy.

Agreed. I did some of the Skype coaching too. But, what I ran into was people then Skyping me all the time with questions about how to launch WP or other basic stuff.

Plus, once your income reaches a certain level you can't justify coaching anymore. In business I always look for what is the highest purpose I can spend my time for?

For everything else I hire someone.

Just sayin what's worked for me is all.

Well, I've never had that be a problem. Email marketing is a big subject with many pieces you need to learn.

Again, if you look at Frank Kern. He gave away some of the best information in his Mass Control product in videos leading up to the launch. Again, he made millions.

If your niche is so tight that there is only one thing to teach them, then you might want a different niche.

In email marketing, if I teach you how to write a series, I still have to teach you lead capture, testing, copy writing etc....

Give them what I term UBI. Which is an acronym for Useful but Incomplete. Give them great Value but do not give them every "trick in the book". It does NOT have to be a Masterpiece

Save some of your top notch material for later. Not necessarily to sell it. But as good fodder for follow up emails

When I was promoting CB products I told all my customers about the 60 day guarantee and if for any reason they couldn't get one, I'd refund them out of my own pocket.

I also never had one request.

Yeah, what you were going was great. You take 100% of the stress off the buyer and they will buy more and refund less.

You're right about the ATM thing, that's for sure.

The content for the freebie opt-in gift is very important. This is your chance to prove your worth. They don't have any other reason to believe in you, so give them something that will "WOW" them. And continue to offer free and good information in your email marketing messages to them. Always make the content great. This goes a long way when converting leads into customers.

You need to understand the final result that your customer wants and then take them the first step with your lead magnet.

If you can do that successfully they will be more likely to take the next step with you.

Some would say you want to demonstrate quality in your freebie that they will relate to your future sales pitch product. really though as long as you can use it to entice them into opting in you will be fine as you shouldn't be mailing your offer right back to back and they probably have opted into multiple things and don't associate the freebie with you plus they probably realize it was PLR from elsewhere.

The free offer matters greatly and should be planned out ahead of time. It should have value to it but then also warm them up for what you feel should be next they need to learn. The entire time your follow up emails should be increasing in value and cost.
