story does a good job at selling if you're OK with lying.

Go for the story every time in my book. Without lying. Whats wrong with a TRUE story?

Well if you're an affiliate marketer trying to sell different products with true stories, stories would be something like "Hi, I saw this product and wanted to sell it to you for its commissions"

Nothing to sell, only value to give and new knowledge to learn.

What kind of visitors are you trying to lead to the sales page?

If you're targeting people who are already aware of the problem and are contemplating on choosing among many solutions, then a review-type approach will be perfect in intercepting their decision.

If you're targeting people who don't even know that they need what you're offering, then telling a story will work wonders in winning - and keeping - their attention.

This is a very good point! I agree with Coleen wholeheartedly: It depends strongly on your market.

If you are promoting something new: You have to use a story page.
If you promoting several things, or a general niche with several products, review page would do better and serve you well.

A story is a powerful tool that can build a relationship between the consumer and the product whereas a product review may only provide details of the product. Consumers are more likely to buy a product that they can relate to.

I'm having a real mental problem with your question.

Isn't telling a story of how you had success with a product inherently a review?

It may be a different format of reviewing the product, but you are still reviewing the product.
