Using Amazon S3 to host videos?

Hi there,

I was thinking of using Amazon S3 to host my sales videos over the more expensive options like Vimeo and Wistia.

Is this a good idea?

I don't know about the prices on Vimeo or Wistia, but I am very happy with the speed of delivery with Amazon S3. If it is also the cheaper solution - all the better.

Besides videos, I use Amazon S3 (with their private folders) for actual product delivery so that I can issue unique download URLs for each buyer... dramatically reducing product piracy.

Yes definitely use s3 for hosting your videos. I would highly reccommend that you use something like 'ezs3' to add customised players to your websites too. Makes life a whole lot easier than fiddling around with other players.

That's damn stupid. You can host videos on Youtube, and Youtube itself already has tons amount of traffic to push to your videos.

    Pleas think again! Be smart!

For someone who has a name like yours would know that if you host with You Tube they can and have deleted them before , would you not think that the majority of the MMO would be doing it if allowed.

Also calling someone stupid is like calling the kettle black

There are times when you'll want to host on YouTube, and times when something like S3 is more appropriate. I use both.

If you don't want YouTube's branding, if you don't want YouTube's playback controls, if you want access to videos controlled by something on your server (eg. only showing them to people who are signed in to your site), etc., then S3 is a great option, and very cost effective.

But yeah, you'll likely want to post some videos to YouTube too in order to get traffic from YouTube and Google search results, to get subscribers who are YouTube users, etc.

There are many reasons not to host on YT. The biggest reason I see is the massive "leak" they create. Also, S3 will offer better speed and quality along with privacy and security.

I like S3. It's the closet I ever get to Amazon!

Yes, good idea however always make backup in Youtube. In case you not using Amazon anymore you can change to Youtube URL when needed.
