Have to love the copycats

What do you do when you encounter a copycat site trying to outrank you for the same keywords, same theme, same link structure, similar article titles?

Would it be grinch-like to send a bunch of juicy spammy links their way? I mean it's Christmas time after all - the season of giving

I may have some intellectual rights...

I'm guessing by your post count that you are fairly new to IM (apologies if I've misjudged).

I've been doing this full time for over 6 years so please do trust me when I tell you....

The only way to to make a long term success of this business is to concentrate on building your own business in an ethical way.

Everyone, without fail, that uses dodgy tactics to build their business have and will fail. Google and others all catch on quick to dodgy practices and change the game so you lose out.

Even more pointless is attacking your competitors. That is not only unethical but a waste of time and actually detrimental. While you're attacking one competitor 10 others are building their business and will simply outrank or out-market you.

Rule one for building a business. If your activity is not directly improving your business you shouldn't be doing it.

It is easy to get caught up in the outrage of being wronged. But it is equally a waste of time.

Focus on your business, not on someone else's. If they are blatantly stealing copyrighted material from you, then there are proper ways of addressing that. Learn what they are and do them. What you might find however, is that even then, your effort is more that what you gain from it.

So that leads you right back to focusing on your business and not someone else's.

If you are not getting the results you want, then try to figure out why, and make the necessary changes. Once you get the results you want... you will find you care less about what other's are doing.

        Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

I think some people lurk around the forum for years before they actually sign up.

If you wanna be a douche, go for it. Just remember that karma thing -- they're just as capable as you.

Maybe recognize a hustler and steer them the right direction -- towards you both making more money?

If your income is wrapped up in this one site, and they've blatantly copied you (as in, word for word copying), pursue legal means -- start by hitting up their hosting company with a DMCA request.

If they haven't copied you word, for word, you don't have a basis for anything. Out-work them, or work with them. Don't be a douche.

If this isn't your only site -- think of other routes. Karma's a B

The fact your even considering that kind of activity tells me you probably on the wrong forum.

If you can't do something honestly and ethically then don't do it at all.

Look, I'm just spurring conversation. I wouldn't want it done to me but I also think it's unethical to pretty much copy an entire site.

This is not my only income source. It's just a web property that I own. I feel like I'm at that point where I know I'm doing things right when the copy cats come around.

Lastly, I'm in the right forum! Why? well people can learn from this thread. When I posted it, I was just speaking my mind on what I'd like to do - but I'm not a low life. I was hoping to see what kind of answers all the so called "gurus" would give.

Here is what I'll do, sell the property and move on. It's a lingering site anyway. BTW - I don't consider myself an IM. I'm an entrepreneur with a passion for building small business and web properties. I know the difference between what is ethical and what is not.

Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Simple, create authority. Authority trumps scraper sites.

  • Innovate and do even better. Put your energy into creating a superior offering. People who copy are just taking shortcuts. Maybe it'll give them some business for a while but it's not a viable income model. Eventually you'll have an even better offering than theirs if you pour your energy into creating something better.

Did they "copy" your entire site - or did they reverse engineer it and launch a competing site?

Outrank them - outwork them - outwrite them....move to a better theme - much better in the long run (and short run) than trying to sabotage them with unethical means.

If you wouldn't want it done to you - not good to get a reputation as someone who does it to others....

You can focus on wasting your time with them or you can waste your time with INCOME PRODUCING activities that will take your business forward. People will always try to copycat what you do.

I would move forward if I were you.

You can not be sure Negative SEO will work nowadays. You might actually just improve his rank by spamming him. Google knows about this tactic which has been going on for some time now.

If your business is legit, getting some authority links should be enough for you.

Great content should set you apart. After all, the content on both sites cannot be identical.

Is there any problem with what I said?

Neg SEO barely works nowadays, I see this everyday on the serps. Did I say wrong? If others tell him how he should behave, I told him the truth about the consequences of his action.

Or did you just try to judge me with your badass comment?

If I find someone copying my content, I just give them a call and they remove it in like 5 minutes. You can get their phone number by a Whois search. If you couldn't find his phone number or he did not remove it even after calling (and if he is ranking in first two pages for my keyword), I'd send an email to their web host.

Some people are low down and dirty. They try to take what others already have. These types of people won't last long trying to 'sponge' off someone else's creativity (IE yours in this case).

It does make you mad (I know because same thing happens to me from time to time).

But you can not stoop to their level of ignorance.

Just leave the scammers and the lazy to themselves. Eventually they will figure out that their success will only come from their own hard work and creativity.

    Now on the flip side....

You Must be doing something right if someone is trying to copy your success.

    Just keep on being you!
