404 on urls which I know are correct

I am busy loading content to my membership site (whishlist member) everything seemed to be working fine until last night when I was alerted that a member could not download anything...just gets sent to a 404 page.

I have checked and double checked these urls and even pasted them direct into my browser .....but still get a 404 not found.

Any pointers on how to overcome this? ... there are a lot of different video files and software files which I don't want to have to upload again.

Thanks in advance......oh ......and of course Merry Christmas

First, try re-saving your permalink settings in wordpress. If that doesn't help, after doing that, make sure to clear any cache plugins or cloud or server cache you are using. If still a problem, are you using any plugins that do redirects or that block traffic of certain sources?

Thanks for your reply and advice, my initial thoughts were plugins conflicting etc. and deactivated all of them, but the urls should work direct from my browser without interference from the theme or plugins.

I am thinking htaccess .but I can't see it in my cpanel ...a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

    Thanks anyway

Just to verify, did you do what I said with your permalinks and that didn't work?

As for your .htaccess file, if you are going in from cpanel, you will need to check the box to show hidden files. You could also use an ftp client like filezilla.

Yes .everything you suggested .... as far as caching plugins are concerned, I am using wordfence which has falcon cache .. I reverted back to no cache .... still no joy.

        Thanks for tip about htaccess.

Are you getting 404s on all pages or just wishlist protected content? Do you get them when signed is as admin too?

Try temporarily changing the permissions on your .htaccess file to 666 and then do the permalink save again. Then make sure to change your permissions back right after.

It was initially protected content, but I reset everything to unprotected to see if that would work ...but still the same.

Whether i am logged in or out ..makes no difference ....404 on all my download links.

I can't find my htaccess file ...i can see it if i search for it in cpanel, but cannot do anything with it...... and I can't find any tick box to view hidden files. aggh

I guess i am going to have to contact my hosting company ...just as I was getting somewhere too ..ahh well

Thanks again or all your help.
      Much appreciated.
