How to deal with huge surges of traffic?

I'm wondering how i can prepare for a sudden burst of visitors.
I'm talking about 5000 on the website at the same time,it would die off in a day or two.

How do i keep the website from crashing?

    Use a good hosting service that can handle the traffic. The cheap packages won't handle it. But if you only have the high traffic for a day or two, why pay for a more expensive service? Not sure how to give you a better answer to your question.

      Yep,that is exactly my problem.

      If i only get the traffic once,sure there will be people that return,but nowhere near that amount,so is it even worth it?

        Doesn't sound like it in your case. I get the feeling that you paid for some quick traffic to your landing pages that may or may not convert.

          No,nothing will be paid.

          I think i have a pretty good chance of getting on a top page of a subreddit.
          Which in case you are not familiar is pretty big,akin to getting posted in a major newspaper.

    This is a question for your host provider. Make sure that the plan you currently have can handle this. If not you will need to 'upgrade' and pay more.

    Thats actually not that much traffic at all and should be easily handled by most mid-sized hosting packages.

    Just to make sure simply give a call to your hosting company.

    You need to contact your hosting provider and inform about this "event" plan to be prepare and inform about this because such a big amount of traffic can Kill/Crash your website instantly if you are using some cheap hosting service.

    As suggested by everyone else, call your web host. They might offer you a deal for a short-term upgrade.

    As another suggestion, if possible, you could host an optin page offsite, using software like Instapage and then drive the traffic there and capture optins. From there, you can drive the traffic to your website in a more controlled manner and also grow your community.
