Introducing Myself to the Warriors

Hello All,

Although I've known about the forum for a long time, I've officially signed up today. Very excited and I really look forward to meeting and connecting with many of you.

I'm here because I need to figure out a way to earn income remotely (of course, I'll also be contributing where possible/value-added). My wife is a student of Medicine in Grenada and I've been staying back at home (Calgary, AB) since there's not exactly a burgeoning labor market down there. She'll be a student there until May of 2010, where we'll then be moving to New York for a period of at least two years.

The problem is, as a Canadian, I'll have difficulties finding work in New York. Although I'm inexperienced in all of this, my suspicion is that most firms wouldn't exactly be thrilled with the thought of hiring a foreigner with all of the extra administrative duties required.

While some may view this as a crisis, I see opportunity. I've wanted to establish a web-presence for a long time, but have always succumbed to the usual excuses; too busy, too hard, too costly, whatever. This is kinda my chance to legitimately sever off ties to my current situation in Calgary and force myself to try something brand new in Grenada/New York.

I've created a site in the last week, UsefulAccounting dot com, that I feel can be my start towards financial/employment independence.

Again, I really look forward to connecting with a lot of you. Add me on Facebook!

Continued success,

Jack

Hi, Jack. Welcome to the forum.

I've made several very pleasant visits to Calgary (summertime) and several not as pleasant (wintertime). That's really a long-distance relationship, isn't it, Calgary - Grenada? I wish you and your wife all the best.

As someone offering a professional service, you'll get plenty of online marketing tips and techniques here at the WF. I'll suggest that you also establish full profiles for yourself at some of the networking sites where people in other professions hang out. The largest of those is LinkedIn. It's a great place to make connections within your profession and with prospective clients.

Yeah. I'm hoping on moving there next month, though, so I could be with her for about her last 9 months.

The Canadian system for medical schools is crazy. My wife has an M.Sc & 10 years of volunteer experience at a hospital (she was 25 when she last applied to get into a Canadian school in 2008). She's wanted to be a doctor her whole life. And she couldn't even get an interview to get in. Seems like a pretty shady system with respect to who gets in and who doesn't, so a lot of Canadians, Americans, too, have been going to school in the Caribbean countries, Austrialia, Ireland, etc. It's too bad, as we're losing a lot of good doctors and the demographics of North America suggest that there's going to be a major shortage of physicians as our population continues to age.

On LinkedIn - I'm on it already but have only checked it a few times. I'd rather consolidate all of my networkings into a single page, if possible. My preference is Facebook.

Here's my take. LinkedIn is nearly all professional while Facebook is a bizarre amalgam of personal, professional, and spam. LinkedIn has a number of established professional groups for accountants having thousands of members each. On Facebook it's kind of hard to tell, since the group search results can't be sorted by number of members, descending, as far as I can see. But the early results don't look promising, showing quite a few groups with only one member each.
