Beating the competition

Hi guys
As an Internet marketing newbie, I'm looking to compete with a leaf generation website that has the following page rank stats:

- Google pr 4/10
- domain authority 26/100
- page authority 35/100
- external backlinks 580
- referring domains 121
- domain age 17 years

Would really shoreside any though guidance on how difficult it would be to compete from an organic traffic generation perspective.

Cheers all.

  • If your a new site, it will take you a while to compete with this site, however it's not impossible and with the right expertise and ranking strategies can be done.

It is seldom a good idea to use the same marketing method as your competition, particularly when they have dominated a narrow distribution channel such as in the SERPs. There are many other online/offline marketing strategies that are faster, better, and cheaper than going head to head against such entrenched competitors.

          Hello myob

Plus there's the story bout Sisyphus too! Some of these marketers don't seem to take any notice of ancient greek mythology like we both do! They will be doomed for eternity! lol.

          Cheers

LOL! I never did mess around with the gods of Google. And actually I was referring to Sisyphus in that post. He could have used a good pair of shoes.

That poor hapless schmuck had the same tricky traits as many SEO folks do nowadays. That's what gets them into trouble. Trying to play tricks on Google really only pisses them off all-to-hell.

          This^^^.
So, do you want to try and beat the leaf generation website you mentioned above or do you want to make money? Then why play to your competitors strengths and on their turf to boot? Yikes!

What are they overlooking, ignoring or don't have time to be bothered with that you can provide to your target customers? Focus on your target customers instead of the SERPs for now, that's where you'll find your competitive edge(s) as myob mentioned above. .

When you're new, you have to pick your battles.

Why not spend your time, effort, and resources building a site that doesn't directly compete with established businesses that have so many advantages over you?

You can still be in the niche of your choice. Just position your business so that you can be unique, so that you avoid having to compete with standing success.

You'll find many nice opportunities at the edges of the niche. They are uncovered by doing some up-front niche research (which you should always do regardless of how much you think you know about the needs/wants/desires of your audience).

Profitable business is all about seeing where profit opportunities present themselves. It's not about entering a market and thinking you have to sell (and compete against) what everyone else is selling.

Thanks sda. I'm trying to get an approx idea of the amount of resource (time and money) it would take to compete with this. Can you be any more specific, given the limited info I have provided or is it a 'piece of string' question!? Cheers

it depends on a lot of things...
if you can get a really high authorithy backlink for your site, nothing is impossible. your content should be unique and really well written.
Try to check your competitions "money keywords" and try to rank those keywords.

    Hi Brother whats up ,

Looking at the numbers above ,it looks pretty daunting

Since you have just started out ,I would not recommend you to start with this

It will be a patience game ,there is a heavy possibility that you may not see any results for some time ,and i dont want you to loose enthusiasm

Keep going and take massive action

Start with a low competition keyword

It really depends on lot of things, like on-page seo , off-page seo , your hard work , dedication .

Your keyword research will be one of the key factors what you cannot underestimate because from that point all your results depends . It is like choosing wrong path in dark forest Browse forum you will find a lot of useful answers in keyword research part .

Then it will be also very important how you decide do SEO for your website (linkbuilding, online presentation) You need to keep in mind that SEO is a process which takes time to rank so you need to be patient especially with competitor like this.

You can replicate its backlink footprint

You can also look for broken links and replace their backlinks

Also, look for better backlink sources

I'll say forget about competing with them (okay I know you can't), but just start by competing with yourself.

Impossible to tell: your numbers don't accurately describe anything.

Look at the next 9 and you're bound to see someone with higher numbers in a lower position.

The PR has not been updated since 2013. By now, it could be 6 or 3 or 0.

Domain and page authority are metrics developed by someone who's not Google, so they don't have a direct bearing on anything...

Domain age is irrelevant... a brand new domain can outrank a 10000 years old domain any day with better links.

What matters is the number of good links hitting the page.

They may be #1 on the strength of 28 links or 280 or 500... depending on the quality of links.

I wouldn't think think this Niche would be too hard to crack. Horticulture narrowed down to this does not seem to be hugely competitive. Just not sure there is a lot of money to be made in it though

I am Really Confused as my competitors has Old Domain and Good DA and PA how to beat them with what strategy ?

Old Domain, Good DA and PA are not what you should be concerned with. Check their backlinks. Get the same number of backlinks from the same places as they have, then get 1 more and you'll be ahead (if your onpage optimization is the same).

Or get similar backlinks, just more of them. Or get better backlinks (then, you can have fewer).
