I just got into Men's Health magazine...here's how

I got some free publicity from an article in a popular magazine and here's how...

I appear in from the September '09 issue of the popular men's magazine "Men's Health".

Here's a link to the same article online - The Article

This is getting me some good publicity and there's a good tip in this for my fellow warriors.

When I was contacted by the writer about appearing in this article I asked her how she had found me.

The keyword phrase she used to search google was "online auction EXPERT".

Putting the word "expert" after their desired keywords is a common way for researchers and writers find experts for things, and in this case some free publicity for me as an expert.

The basic lesson: The word "expert" is a good one to optimize your sites for!

Just wanted to pass that tip along and hope it helps get someone else some free publicity.

The writer for the magazine was assigned the task of writing an article on a topic she was unfamiliar with. She went to google and typed in "online auction expert". Since I had optimized for that term I came out on top with little competition.

Good advice. I was contacted by Spike TV about two months ago to consult on one of their TV shows. I asked the producer the same thing, how she found out about me. She told me that she had googled "Dog Behavior Expert" and I popped up in the top 10.

Congratulations, Jim! That is great exposure.

Another tip for building an expert reputation with the media: Reporters will sometimes search Amazon.com looking for the expert. I got a major magazine feature because the writer went to Amazon looking for the "person who wrote the book" on the topic. She found me.

The second part of this tip is to make sure your contact information is easily found. Once she found my name, she still had to find me. (Amazon doesn't put that kind of info on the book page.) Do you have your phone number and email address (or contact form) where they can be found? A reporter on a deadline does not want to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to reach you.

The problem is that many people brand themselves as experts and then can't deliver!

This is when you say...sorry super great magzine people that will give me tons of exposure... I can't really tell you how I'm an expert... I thought just saying it was enough

Congradulations on the mention in the magazine. It must be a great experience.

You know I was asked once to appear on some specialized small time TV show but they wanted me to pay just to get on!! I really thought it was a scam

    Thanks,

    George

you can probably go a bit further and put expert 'review.' I know I've seen that help a few people out as well using review in their tags.

I got my site listed in Maxim once.

      Well sort of.

I noticed a piece in the magazine about dating gurus and in the article there was listed the domain of a very popular dating guru, but the domain name was misspelled.

So I quickly registered the misspelled domain name. Ta-da!

If you're really interested in being interviewed by journalists and reporters for print, TV and radio, then take a look at ExpertClick - Home. It's not at all cheap to join as an expert (starts at $995 and goes up to $2795 per year), but I would guess that this is probably the place where a lot of media people would start their search.

I haven't used this service, so I can't vouch for how well it works. But I could see where it might be worthwhile if you're really looking to promote yourself.

Nice work. After getting into this business I look at "experts" in the media in a completely different light. All you need to do to become an expert is to say you are one

Did you get much traffic from the publicity?

  • Great idea/info. Thanks.

    Got me thinking...

Is anyone actively writing articles for offline publication? In the past I would contact editors with article ideas--and they would pay me when the article ran. I haven't sent out a query letter to an editor since 2002 or so. Anyone been doing this more recently?

My biggest question is how can this continue for so long.
Well, it is interesting how so many places are the OPPOSITE of what they claim And COME ON! It should be EASY to stop rats! WOW! But you want to see something bad? Earlier this year, nearly EVERYTHING in the US that had peanut materials was called into question.

FDA Knew of "Putrid" PCA Peanuts Weeks Before Salmonella Outbreak

And they did NOT know about this "weeks before". They knew about it about 3 YEARS before! Their first MASSIVE citations were in 2006.

    Quote:
The company also didn't clean its equipment there after finding contamination, and didn't properly separate raw and finished products, the FDA said.
And salmonella is caused by only TWO things! Use of fertilizer from very sick animals and improper cleaning, or very low class workers with NO concern. THIS sounds like the later, especially since the former is so rare, and the problem was SO widespread, etc....

Sadly, it is hard to trust ANY company ANYWHERE! If humans didn't have such immunity, we probably would have died out as a species LONG ago. Look at typhoid mary! She COULD have EASILY worked her whole life with NOBODY getting sick, etc... Her poor hygiene basically made her a danger to all. And typhoid is spread the SAME way as salmonella, and it IS salmonella! Mary Mallon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Every time I watch a cooking show, I want to throw up, seeing them put their hands in, speaking over food, and tasting with a spoon used to stir. It heartens me to see shows like "unwrapped" where they show machines handling everything, but they ALSO need to be CLEANED! That was at least part of the problem at PCA(or "Quality formulation laboratories").
