A question regarding to Indian writters for native English speakers from US/CA and UK

Usually yes, they can tell unless the person is very, very good at writing in English.

For a native English speaker the clues are subtle but reading text that has been written by a non-native speaker has small differences in the words used and the turn of a phrase that give it away.


Some examples:

A sales page I recently read kept talking about the need for a "counselor". English speakers do not use the term counselor for mentor or coach, although from a language perspective it means the same thing. It was obvious the sales copy was written by a non-native speaker.

Another sales page talked about food from a 'cart'. This is a common term for a food vendor in India but not at all used in North America in the context it was used in the copy. Again, a dead give away that the writer was not a native English speaker.

One problem is, since you are not a native English speaker yourself, you would not notice these subtle differences when reviewing the writer's work.

I have read material from Indian writers that I could not tell whether they were native US/CA or not. A few questions revealed that almost all of them had either been educated in the US or spent extensive time traveling in the US.

I would say that depends on the individual writer and their command of the English language. I've had experiences with excellent Indian writers who could write as well as any native English speaker, and I've had the type that write exactly as they speak. That, in my opinion, is not good writing at all. It sounds very sloppy, and it's not easy to read at all. That's not real writing, in my opinion. Real writing involves using proper grammar as well as possessing the ability to compile and organize facts.

One thing that I've learned when it comes to purchasing content is that you get what you pay for. That statement is not true for everything you buy, but in this case it is. Skilled writers charge handsomely for their content, as well they should. Most of the time, if you are paying someone $5 or $10 for a 500 word article, you are not going to get anything great. Think about it for a second. If someone is only getting paid $5 for a 500-word article, how much time do you think they will spend on it? If they spend more than 30 minutes on it then it's not really worth their time. In my experience, you can't really produce anything decent in half an hour.

You could always ask to see a portfolio of the author's work before you buy. I have also had situations, though, where writers have shown me articles that were obviously not written by them. You could always just start out by buying one article, too. If you don't like the article then don't buy from that person again. I guess maybe it's also trial and error like a lot of things in IM.

Many non-native English speakers can write perfectly acceptable English, but, as onSubie says, there are usually a few giveaways that a native speaker will notice. If it's important to you that the content of your site comes across as being written by a native English speaker, my advice would be to either employ one or get the content first edited and/or proofread by an English speaker. And don't forget that there can also be some subtle (and not so subtle) differences among native English speakers, such as those between US English and British English, for example.
