Where else to do keyword research

I was wondering where people get keywords other than google keyword tool. I have gotten to the point where I am not sure if I trust there numbers and here's why.

So many times over the past year I will check keywords to see what google says are searched and many times it will say zero searches for a keyword which makes no sense because when looking at google analytics it my say people typed in that same keyword at least 100 times over the past month to reach my site. Not to mention the fact that at least for me for every 100 people who go to may site from a search they might show me maybe 23 of the keywords they used to get there.

This is why I don't know whether or not to trust there numbers, The other problem is the other two places I look for keywords use google to get there numbers. So where do you go if you don't trust the numbers you are getting.

  • Google search numbers are estimates. They are especially unreliable when the numbers are very low.

A result of '0' does not mean zero searches, it means the search volume is too low for Google to calculate or the search term is new in the Google Keyword database and not yet showing a statistical result.

You will see things like hundreds of keywords with '1600' search results. Are they all exactly 1600? Or are some 1545, some 1621, etc.

Google keyword search results should be used as a guide. They can also be used to gauge popularity relative to other search terms.

Since Google does not share their exact search volumes with 3rd parties, how could any other source be considered reliable as far as Google Search is concerned?
  • Google keyword planner is an useful tool to do keyword research.

  • In fact almost every other tool use google to get their estimates but those are only estimates, so therefore even if you see zero in keyword tool you can have some traffic from that keyword. You can never get 100% results, I am doing my research this way : I choose more tools like long tail pro or sem rush and I compare their results and somewhere in middle is what I am looking for.

  • I use Keyword Discovery. Costs $30/month though. Used to be $69/month - and it was still worth it at that price.

  • Google keyword planner is my perfect choice!
  • Hello marks2424.
My best advise is "don't use keyword research tool anymore if your trust flow / Citation flow are under 25. Since 2012 google only rank sites with authority for competitive keywords.

So open 100 forums and check what people are looking for right now..issues..products... and write article about those issues.

It is the best advise i can give.

    • Why not mine your own referrer stats? Not just Google Analytics, but the data provided by your web host culled from your own logs. It's the most reliable data you'll get for the search terms people are using to find YOUR site.

Tools like the keyword planner (and most paid tools use the keyword planner data) are best used for comparison, not exact numbers. For example, GKWP can give you an indication of whether "best dog breed" or "which dog breed" gets more searches, more competition for paid ad slots, etc.

Beyond that, look for seed keywords where people in that market congregate - forums, social media, Q&A sites like Quora, and so on. Look for words and phrases that keep coming up again and again.

  • There are a number of reliable software packages out there but I would highly recommend you check out Long Tail Pro but I also believe this software using information provided by Google.

    • You might want to try this one. Manual searching through google instant searches and by checking on the competitor's website.
