Usually the best domains are one or two words or letters. They also arouse curiosity and stick in people's minds.

        • Amazon
        • Google
        • CNN
        • Yahoo etc

The thing to avoid is being too clever for your own good.

Yes, you can use catchy words as domain names/brands, but look at the ones that stick. Names like Google, Yahoo, Zazzle, etc. are catchy. They catch on in your brain because they just hit the ear right.

This is different than trying to use puns or other plays on words. My thought is that unless you are going the catchy word direction, favor interesting and simple over clever.

Being clever with your domain name is really a double-edged sword.

If being clever leads to a domain name being memorable, then all the better.

On the other hand, if clever means "cute," or funny, or amusing without being easily remembered, then clever is not good.

The whole purpose of your domain name is to become an address, a gateway, or calling card for your business and web site. You want prospects and customers to remember and easily access your business.

If "clever" means that your site is more easily remembered - then being clever serves an important purpose.

But being clever for its own sake means nothing really.

Here are two more excellent domain name generators: Lean Domain Search and Impossibility.

      The best to you,

There's a couple of factors for choosing a domain name for branding that are a little different than for off line brands.

Notice the names John posted...they repeat letters. "Google" repeats the "g" and "o" and Zazzle repeats the "z" three times.

Also, two short words that rhyme are easier for people to remember, like HubStub and FogDog. If you use a domain name like these, notice how I "mountain peaked" each word by capitalizing the first letter to visually separate the two short words. Note that domain names are NOT case sensitive, but other parts of the URLs are.

Not only are repeated words and letters easier to remember, they are easier to type (since they repeat the patterns of letters on the keyboard). Typing a name is one thing that separates a domain name from off line businesses and an important factor when selecting a domain name for branding.

      Make it easy to remember.

Clever does not necessarily mean that it's good.

Make it easy to remember and to pronounce. See how easy it is to remember and say these brands? Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, Coca-Cola, etc.

Very good point: "clever does not necessarily mean that it`s good."

Think : Papa John`s Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, etc. (sorry I am hungry at the moment).

Or, easy to remember... A short and sweet domain name like OpenEnglish.com - which when shown in their (very entertaining) TV commercials, is really easy to remember, even an hour or 2 later, when the television program or movie is over.

Whatever you sell, just make the domain name relevant to it, and market the heck out of it.

The domain name doesn't make you successful. The marketing does.

  • Ideally, a good domain name is:

    1. Related to your topic/niche.
    2. Have a .com TLD. The domain registrars give you a choice of .com, .net, .org, and so on, but in general, .com is still the best. The exception is if you are specifically targeting a local market, in which case you might want to go after a .co.uk or a .com.au for example.
    3. Not be too long. Recommended is fewer than 20 characters, and fewer than 3 words.
    4. Be easy to remember. Short and catchy domain names are better than long, generic domain names stuffed with keywords.

Some useful tools to help you find a domain name include:

I like to keep my domain names as short as possible, two words maximum, which is not easy when you're restricting it to a .com domain.

But I've always been able to find cool domain names.

The way I do it is to try to register the most obvious names first, then if they are already taken (they usually are) I head on over to thesaurus.com and look for synonyms.

For example, not long ago, I wanted listtrainer.com but that was taken...

...and after looking for synonyms I found listmentor.com. Which, I thought was a better name anyway!
