How Do You Make Money from Advertising Ideas?

My uncle doesn't own an online business, but he has tons of great advertising ideas. He can use current events and controversies to come up with ideas for videos and television commercials. For instance, some years ago, I remember him telling me that he could use the Bush shoe-throwing incident to advertise shoes. He then came up with a story in which the would-be shoe thrower decides against throwing the shoes at Bush because the shoes were just too good to let go.

Are there companies who buy advertising ideas or hire people who have them? How about internet marketers?

Also, is there any way he can protect his ideas before he reveals any of them to a client?

    You can't copyright an idea.

Long ago I worked for an ad agency briefly and they had contracts that protected their "concepts" before they presented the "idea boards" to the client. Not sure how that worked legally, though.

Ideas are only ideas - it's the implementation that makes them valuable. He needs to find clients who will pay him to implement his ideas as part of their marketing strategy.

Thank you, Kay. It's great to hear from someone who's had some experience in the advertising field!

One possible solution is to do this for himself and not for clients. There are so many affiliate programs, AdSense, and other revenue streams that he should have plenty of options. It's even possible to sell leads to businesses.

Youtube calls this "tent poling" and recommends it in their Creator Handbook and using special events can bring some good traffic, if only for relatively short periods of time.

Thanks, Kurt. I want to encourage him to get into internet marketing. I think he'd be interested in affiliate marketing.

Best advice I've heard all year. LOL

No but seriously, this is great advice. Let him benefit big time from his agile and obviously potent ideas.

Hmz, firstly determine if his idea can be copyrighted, trademarked, or patented:

    - Copyright protects original works of authorship and applies to any work once it is available in a tangible form. For instance, you cannot copyright a thought or a spoken idea, but once that idea is recorded or written down, copyright is automatically applied. You can register for a copyright, but it is not necessary to be protected by law. Some examples of marketing items that can be copyrighted include blog postings, white papers, headlines, tag lines, infographics, jingles, etc.

    - Trademark protects names, brands, symbols, and logos. If and when you come up with a new logo or branding concept, you should apply to have it trademarked so others cannot steal it.

    - Patents protect inventions. While this measure generally won’t apply to you, if you do happen to develop a new technological system for marketing or a new app, it may be eligible for a patent.

If you work with a team, be sure that your team understands when an idea or plan is confidential. Uninformed teammates or employees can ruin a competitive advantage by innocently leaking intimate ideas and secrets, not realizing that they were meant to be private.

Better to go to a legal source

If he can come up with catchy ONLINE ad ideas he could perhaps do freelance brainstorming or create an ad agency for small business online...offline he's competing with the resources of big ad agencies.

UNLESS - he could create a local 'ad consulting' biz offline to help mom and pop businesses, small regional brands, etc.

First gig: come up with an IDEA he can use to promote himself.

If the advertising ideas are great as you say, you can make it into a gig and offer your services. You can work with him and go through various niches of products sold on the internet and create books on advertising ideas or you can use the advertising skills to advertise and earn cool cash online. I'd personally go for the second choice. It's up to you however, but you can claim a copyright on ideas that you've not put out there. An idea is just an idea, action is what makes the difference.
I have this hypothesis, I don't know whether it has been proven yet but at least two people in this world share a similar thought pattern/process.
    Hope this helps,
    Omer, here.
