What's the Deal With EzineArticles.com and Backlinks?

by Daniel Scott 13 replies
Hi everyone,

I have been doing a lot of competition research lately, checking out my competitor's articles on EZA and also trying to build backlinks to my own articles to kick their butts submission wise.

However, No matter what article I look up using Yahoo! Site Explorer, no backlinks show up. Not for my articles (which I KNOW I have made backlinks to, at least some of which should have been indexed by now) or my competitor's articles which are ranking ahead of mine.

My question:

Would there be a problem with the way EZA does it's URLS so that backlinks aren't counted when linking to it? Or something? I'm kind of coming up blank here so if anyone can help me out I would be appreciative.

  • Have you checked the source code to see if Ezinearticles has put in the "NoFollow" tag? There was a rumor a while back that they were going to; I haven't checked into this in a while.

    Angela,

The problem is not backlinks FROM EzineArticles.com but instead backlinks TO EzineArticles.com, and these backlinks are definitely not "nofollow".

I appreciate your reply, though. However, this issue still seems a mystery.

    Kind regards,

    From EZA's twitter profile:

"There are no plans at this time to include rel="nofollow" on any links in the Resource Box. Hint hint... Put your links in the Resource Box."

    Brian,

Thanks for your participation in the thread but I don't see how your advice helps solve the original dilemma?

      Hi, Dan.

I'll see if I can't help clear up some of the confusion for you.

My reply doesn't exactly address your initial question. However, it was posted in response to Angela's comment:

In response to Angela's question/suggestion, I replied with:

Imagine, if you will, a group of us sitting around a large table. You pose the situation as you have described it.

Angela asks about the possibility that EZA may be using the 'nofollow'.

I respond to Angela's comment with information I have recently discovered that would indicate that this is not the case.

Your particular situation has not yet been resolved by either of our comments but between the two of us (Angela and myself), we have successfully eliminated that particular option from the list of possibilities.

My apologies that I was not able to post the specific resolution directly to your post.

So your trying to link to your other articles? How would that do any good? Just curious cause I never heard of doing that before.

    Jason

I dont think they have no follow up and running since my blogs show the backlinks. Unless this is something they just did recently

    Jason,

I am linking to each article from other websites. For example, let's say I use a social bookmarking service that is dofollow. I link from there to my websites to my articles to help them get greater power in the SERPs. It's a trick I picked up from a fellow warrior whose name currently escapes me. He was talking about how he gets his articles on the first page of Google. It's probably still either on the front page or not too far back.

    Daniel,

Probably some lag time before Google indexes your backlinks. I tried a "Google Bomb" experiment once (keyword stuffing links from Wordpress, Squidoo, Blogger and Craigslist), and it took me more than a week.

For some reason Google continues to love EZineArticles. I just had an article accepted yesterday, and today it is on the first page of Google for "relevant backlinks". It actually beat out my Neurolinker site, which is the site I'm trying to market with this article!

Dan's question, if I may rephrase - "I built backlinks ***to*** my EZA article. Reason is that I want to beat another article in EZA which is now ranked higher than mine at Google. But the backlinks do not appear at Google, and I can't beat the competitor article. Why?"

        Seems no-one knows though.

I was actually trying to do some research myself last night for a competitor's articles - these articles were getting a ton of views (by looking at the number of times it has been read at the bottom of the article), but they weren't even targeting any keywords that I could figure out. There were no backlinks showing up.....

I was thinking there must be something else that these guys are doing too!

I hope someone who knows a bit more about this can share some tips!

As EZA is saturating Google with the explosion of 'bum marketers', getting 'good keywords' (by the traditional definition of number of searches vs supply of "optimized" search results) could well be a challenge.

"Death of Bum Marketing" on the horizon...?

      Deric,

I don't think article marketing will ever die until it stops being relevant to searchers. Perhaps we will have to spend more time on each article (and actually marketing them instead of just submitting them) but a human-reviewed directory like EZA is (theoretically, at least) full of brilliant content so it makes sense Google and other SEs would rank them highly.

Having said that, most of the stuff I read on there is utter rubbish. I don't know how people can sleep at night writing articles at that kind of standard. It's like a chef serving two-minute noodles. But I digress.

I'm not saying things won't get harder. They will. But IMHO it allows those of us who do things properly to show that we're the right choice.
