How many links in e-mail marketing?

Hi,

For the one who do e-mail marketing, I would like to know how many links for your web site that you add in your e-mails?

I heard that the more links that you add the better, it's that true?

    Hey Hugo.

The key to email marketing would have to be to organize your space wisely. You can add a couple of links throughout your emails, however don't make your list feel as though they are being bombarded with ad's. If you organize it and put 2-3 on the side in each email its not that big of a deal.

    Goodluck and Cheers,

It depends on who you ask. Some say you should only place a link when it's relevant and fits with what you are saying. Others throw links in every couple paragraphs, between the paragraphs, just to get them in there.

It depends on your message, what your link leads to and ultimately, what testing shows your specific audience responds to.

I always try and place 3-4 in my email copy. one at the beginning one at the end and one or two in the middle. Yeah the more you have the more clicks you can possibly generate. But if your readership loves you anyways then you won't have a problem with them clicking through for you. Too many links with no relationship to your readers and you can get the spam button hit on you.

The key is to have a relationship and then you can push off as many links as you would like!

Testing is a very important keyword in email marketing (because the results may differ from a niche to another, etc). However, it is indeed interesting to know other people's results =>

Last MailerMailer report shows this conclusion: "Emails containing more items to click on garnered higher click rates than messages with fewer links, with a sharp increase for messages having over 20 links."

Their tip is this one: "To increase the number of clicks your message receives, link to a variety of content and include multiple links to your destination pages."

[The reports tracks email messages sent through MailerMailer between July 1 and December 21, 2008.]

In one of my niches, I only use one link. Besides number of links, another factor you should consider is how to write a persuasive email so that your readers want to find out more about what you are offering/saying. Your ultimate goal is to get the readers to click on the link in the email. Imagine an email full of links but lacks substance in content... I think it's awful.

Really depends on the format you're using... But if you can segment your lists for testing: Try testing it!

You'd be surprised what works best

3 tends to work fine for most markets... but not all. On earlier on, one later, one in the PS of the email. Like I said above though, sometimes other variations work MUCH better.

    Take care,

  • The "many links" principle came out of a study in 2004 or maybe 2003 that showed the highest number of click throughs came from emails with 20 or more links.

So, lots of articles were written by lots of people who didn't bother to actually read the study and understand what it was talking about. They just wrote "MORE LINKS MEANS MORE CLICKS."

    Here is the reality:

The study was based on emails sent by companies that were more informative in nature (think Web Pro News)--not emails designed to create a direct marketing response. The two are very different.

My weekly newsletter (you have signed up, right? see my sig...) has 15-25 links in it to a variety of articles and resources. I would NEVER use that many links in a direct response "action" email.

3 is the magic number - with 1 of those being the PS or it's equivalent ;-)

People can add multiple links but this may effect delivery rates (by the ESPs and ISPs)

A lot of the sp#m mail I get has just 1 link these days...

It also depends on where in your email series these people are. If its the first couple of emails I might just include a link in the P.S. If it's later than that I would agree that 2-3 is the right number. Also depends on the overall length of the actual email as well.
