Do you actually buy stuff from infomercials?

You know, I'm on a strange sleeping schedule. Sometimes I put the TV on for background noise more than anything else. Late/early morning there are a lot of infomercials on. I admire the way they are put together. I think a lot of valuable marketing lessons can be garnered from them.

I'm just curious have you ever actually bought anything from an infomercial? If you did, why did you buy it? Did it live up to your expectations?

Before my Mom died I bought Kevin Trudeau's "Cures they don't want you to know about." Nope, didn't live up to my hopes.

I bought the Grant and finding money book from the guy with the question marks all over his suit. (or are they dollar signs?) Lesky or Lasky or something like that. Nope.

Bought, Cindy Crawfords meaningful beauty for my Wife. It worked Of course she was already beautiful but she liked the gift and that's why I say it worked.

Some others I can't think of right now.

I bought the magic bullet blender. Of course I bought it online and just bought one instead of falling for the "if you act now, we'll throw in a second one for free, just pay shipping." Why pay $100 for one and get one free when I can actually just buy one and only pay $50?

Aside from the misleading way they try to get you to buy two of them I was happy with my purchase. I used it a lot when my daughter was a baby to make baby food. I also use it quite a bit to make sauces, bread crumbs, etc. when I cook. I've had it for 4 years and it still works.

I have bought some other crap on T.V. that I'd rather not talk about right now.

Man, I've gotta get one of those magic bullets. As soon As I read a WSO I just received I'm going to make the bucks and get one.

Hey, This gives me an idea for a new WSO section. Infomercials. Allen lets us buy WSO space where we upload our Videos/Infomercials. Can you see the hamster king or Steven W. on "Warrior TV" Now that would be worth staying up late for.

George Wright, P.S. I must be sleep depraved right now. g'night.

Mathew Lesko. I have three copies of that book; he used to change it every couple years.

I also have four copies of Don Lapre's "make money with classified ads" system.

I buy these things to look at how they're constructed and how they present information, so I've learned a lot from them - even though I don't use them for their intended purpose.

Well, I've never bought anything from any infomercial before. You know, like those Magic Bullet's when what's his face who had his tongue bitten by a hooker was selling them. They always tell you that crap will never be sold in stores. 99.999% of the time... it will. Those things are actually useful though and work.

Guides on "how to make money" or "cures they don't want you to know"... those are the top money rippers. Those infomercials are some of the biggest and most obvious scams ever.

I've always had one thought though... Are any of those people members of WF? =) Like that one guy who's ALWAYS selling his books and cd's and has a female with a REALLY horrible british accent.

When I first saw that, I noticed that all of the people that were on camera were reading from something. Not only because they were looking slightly to the side, but they way they talk. Most of them sound like grade school kids learning how to read for the first time.

So... you'll NEVER see me buying anything from any infomercial. I'll either wait for it in stores, or not believe what they're saying.

I look in the newspaper every day for informercials imbedded.. today I seen one about some kind of robe and also the secrets to curing bowel problems.

It looks like a warrior job, the copywriting is always funny to read too and I always do wonder which Warrior/Warrior's it is that advertises these kind of things in the Sun?

      Own up?

A few years back I bought "Slim in 6", which is an exercise program put out by BeachBody.com (Their current popular one is the P90X.). The thing that convinced me was that the before and after pictures were realistic. The person was still a little chubby, but you could definitely see changes in their body. It worked (I mean, I did the workouts and it worked). In the 6 weeks that I was working out with the program, I lost at least 4 inches off of my chest, waist, and hips each. I wanna say 7, but it was awhile ago and I'm not positive.

The most recent purchase was the HAAN steam cleaner. I bought it because my linoleum floor was quite dirty, especially in the high traffic areas. Nothing I tried was getting it clean. It didn't work, which really sucked because I had to pay an extra $50 for shipping it to Hawaii (on the mainland, shipping was free). I sent it back, but was out the shipping both ways.

    Love,
    Shannon

I always wondered if anybody bought anything off of those too. Well obviously they do, or there wouldnt be any infomercials. But I subcombed to them also a couple years ago, and bought a life like working light saber. It was the mace windew replica, and I feel like a jedi master everytime I turn it on! lol

I never buy straight off the tv. I usually jump on infomercialratings.com and check the reviews. If it's cool, I head to Walgreens for the return policy.

So far, got my wife a PedEgg that actually works.
Also got the pushup things. Also work great.
Finally, I got the Gopher reachy-thingy. Best purchase EVER if you have kids.

back in collage I watched an infomercial for a grass seed that would even grow on top of cement...

The plan was to buy it and grow a lawn in our dorm rooms and tape the cleaning lady when she came to clean our place.

never went through with it though

lol I remember one infomercials that were selling an A type ladder that can do a standard ladder, a stairway ladder, and a bridge ladder. to myself I've been thinking now that's an A-Class type of ladder. I'm tempted to buy one of the products in infomercials because they explained the type of product that they were selling very well. They are really effective thou since they are on TV and watched by millions at home. Sadly I haven't both any of them thou.

A lot of people are also not aware that a lot of successful infomercials lose money on the front end and do not make profit until the back end.

I bought the Don Lapre "Making Money Package" circa 1997. I placed a tiny classified ad in a newspaper (selling interesting descrambling devices) and I was out big money and only got some lukewarm leads.

Between it and Brad Richdale's infomercial I decided to write a cable descrambler report (I set up a free hosted website to pitch it) which I sold for a few dollars a copy. I took cash, check, or money order. A sold a few copies of the report... I wouldn't find Clickbank until four years later...

The Making Money Package was $39.95. I was a high school kid at the time and working fast food so Don Lapre's approach to making money was all new to me. It was more entertaining than anything. Nothing concrete in the package. It was worth $39.95 but not much more. : )

I bought 'Government Giveaways' from Matthew Lesko years ago on the home shopping club. I bought it because he was so excited about it and he was very convincing. It also didnt hurt that I just got my first credit card in the mail a couple days earlier!

Yes I have! Of course...who can resist? Have you seen those ads? Study them. They are very influencial. I bought the Magic Jack. Worked about half the time. I've bought several other things, too.

My dad buys everything he sees on those infomercials. We have to change the channel and hide his wallet.

    But seriously, very effective advertising.

Late 80s, when infomercials were still fresh, I bought a Soloflex because I couldn't find one locally anywhere, used or not. Was supposed to pay on the installment plan, I think it was 9 payments @ 129 ea or something like that. They charged my card for the first two payments like clockwork, then nothing. So I got a Soloflex for $260.

Then I moved, and sold it for $500.

Wish I'd have bought more of them...

I bought a magic bullet like 3 years ago and still use it to this day, I only use it for margaritas and milkshakes but well worth the investment

and I also bought an aero garden, which I love to grow herbs with it,

also a jack lalanne power juicer which I use every morning for juice

I am pretty good at picking good offers so I havent been ripped off too much,

I love watching infomercials qvc and anywhere they sell stuff on tv they are my favorite shows

Yep. Many, many years ago (I was still living in the Land Of Maple Syrup), I ordered a food dryer on impulse. It actually worked pretty good and we enjoyed lots of homemade dried apple slices.

I once bought one of those electronic bug things that is suppose to get rid of nasty bugs (I hate spiders)! Only 2 easy payments of $39 +P&H. That was back in 2001.

Now you can buy them in those cheap import stores for a few bucks! Most of those gismo things end up cheap in discount junk stores a few years later, with the "As Seen On TV" sticker.

  • I bought Ginsu knives simply because I loved the hook line:

"In Japan, the hand can be used like a knife..."

(guy breaks board with karate chop)

"... but that method doesn't work too well on a tomato!"

(guy karate chops a tomato, crushing it.)

I must say, I got my money's worth out of the knives. They were cheaply made, but the blades were actually pretty good. Where else can you get a full set of knives and a free cookbook for $29.99 plus shipping?

OK, the only thing missing in the aspray commercial and product, is two s's and a space.

    :-)

oh man is that funny. i think i'm going to put that commercial on my facebook page.

I think I convinced my parents to buy a potato peeler when I was a kid. It kind of worked, and the experience was quite magical. It works! Just like on TV!

I always wanted a soloflex, and SteveJohnson, you crack me up man!

Also, my wife bought the Kevin Trudeau book. While it's superficial, if you research further, there are a lot of effective therapies written up in that book.
