Internet marketing areas of interest for strong technical people?

Hi

I'm a developer by trade (mobile and web) and I'm newly interested in generating income online. Affiliate marketing is what brought me to this group, and I've been reading for a few days straight to understand the ins and outs of the trade. Creating quality and value-adding content and building email lists is commonplace through all the info I gathered.

I'm very excited about all the system and technical aspects of internet marketing, optimizing and basically getting your system to run as smoothly as possible, but unfortunately the content creation is not something I have interest in. I'll basically market any product to any audience, the content is only a means to and end for me (technical satisfaction and monetary reward).

My understanding so far is that you need to 1) find a product 2) create your own blog 3) create original relevant related content for said product 4) eventually share your affiliate link to users. This is a crude simplification of everything I've read but those are the action points I could identify after a few days' reading.

- Am I doomed for not having "a hobby or niche" of my own that I can create content for?

- What are alternatives for generating content yourself (which seemingly has to be original, value-adding and of a high quality)?

- Is there space in internet marketing for someone like me, or do I have a skewed idea of it all thinking that I can generate income off only of someone else's content?

I don't want to sell my time and do technical jobs for other marketers.

Thank you for reading

Learn SEO. Some of the best SEOs I know got that way from being technically inclined.

If you can rank a page, you don't need a niche -- every keyword with a valuable offer becomes a niche, then.

No, you're not carrying a skewed idea -- I'm a technical nerd and do just fine. ;D

Where does this page that I am now ranking come from? Is this the "2) create your own blog" part that I mentioned in my original post? Or where would this page (which I understand is the page that contains my affiliate links / deals / whatever) come from?

      Thanks for the confidence boost.

Hi Ideally you should have a niche that you like

Having said that Its not always necessary to build a blog and make money from it

There are so many other techniques that you can use like list building ,CPC,PPV i am not sure if you are familiar with these terminologies it is just a diff traffic generation technique where you do not have to create that much content,Just a landing page will do

Currently i myself is building a blog as it increases your brand awareness but that can be done later if you are not comfortable with it at the get go ,

and BTW building blogs/websites is not the fastest way to earn money and it is not for the faintest of hearts but yes although it is a long process but can bring great passive incomes with it

I'll read up a bit on the terms you've mentioned, I've skimmed over it just lightly. I believe that a niche might come after some time, which should make it easier in the long run, but for a start I just want to see a complete feedback loop, even in its smallest incarnation.

If there are any case studies, blog posts, that you can recommend I'd be very grateful. People seem to post and tell the story but really leave out the practical steps that took (I'm guessing for fear of someone stealing their market).

You will not get the secret sauce you're talking about because what one person does may not work for you. Also if they lay out every step along the way, they are giving away a competitive advantage. Don't forget that this is a marketing forum and a large percentage will always want to upsell you from the basics they laid out in a post or guide.

a word of caution beware of information overload at this point and take a leap of faith. If not you may just spend time reading a lot and never find a direction to go in. Good Luck!

I realise that, thanks for the reminder. I've dipped my toes into the water so far, and my brain is churning around a few other ideas. I suffer greatly from perfectionism paralysis, especially since an initial investment might be involved (time also counts)

You should look into "Growth Hacking". There is a Growth Hacking discussion forum here on this forum and a lot of info available if you Google the term.

A growth hacker is basically a hybrid of coder and marketer. You know how to code and you're interested in internet marketing so you should do well if you familiarize yourself with the concept.

Sounds like a good start, thank you!

People don't give the whole story because the "whole story" is massive, and takes a lot of work.

Yes, the "rankings" from your site come from posts and pages you've put on your blog that are properly targeting keywords.

Since when is that the only way to have a successful online business?

I'm pretty sure that Google doesn't folow this model. Or Facebook. Or Uber. Or AirBnB. Or ... Well, you get the idea.

Like me, you're a developer. Great. Be creative! Code something that people that will help people, entertain people or is otherwise something that people just want.

As for affiliate marketing, it's a monetization method, not a business model. Kayak.com uses a form of affiliate marketing when they get fees from airlines after people buy flights through them. GoodReads.com is a social network that monetized initially through the Amazon Affiliate program. And of course, you could just blog about a product (or type of products) -- though personally I think that's a tough way to go.

But my advice is to forget about monetization for a little bit. Think about what you as a talented developer (at least I hope you're talented!) can bring people that will really have value. Is that a website of some sort? Is it an app? A device? A service? Or something else?

Once you have a great idea on something you can build to help people -- and it could just be a blog promoting affiliate products if that's where your own talents and interests lead you -- then think about monetization. Maybe affiliate marketing is a good fit. Maybe not.

But I do think it would be a shame for you to throw away all your talent on something 1 million people and their brother are doing -- and probably better, since unlike you most of them probably enjoy writing -- without even thinking of some alternatives.
