Tips to help newbies get more detailed answers!

Hi all.

I am sure there have been different versions of this basic message. However, I want to add new things and perhaps help some people, especially newbies.

If you have a question or want to know something, imagine what the person replying would think.

Don't ask generic questions.
Be specific with what you need to know.

Here are 3 examples.

The bad questions are bolded in black and one of the better ways to ask each question is below each one.

How can I make money freelancing?
I'm an experienced writer (substitute your own skills here) and want to make money using my skills. Where do I start?

What's the easiest and fastest way to make money?
What are some methods for making some fast money? I have the following skills...(and then list your skills). That enables people to make suggestions. Remember that nothing will work for everybody in the same way. What works for a friend may not work for you and vice versa.

How quick will Google find my site?
How can I make Google find my site faster?

There are so many questions that it's impossible to know what to ask for them all. Use your commonsense and put your brain in gear before powering up your computer keyboard and asking your questions.

If you ask the generic questions, you'll quite likely receive some stupid replies but you may also get a few good answers.

Try searching the forum to find answers provided by other people before you.

Good luck and start asking people more detailed questions so you learn more faster than you originally would have done.

Charge money for something you do well, or that other people hate to do. Don't get a pimp.

Rob a bank. Even if you fail, you won't have to worry about room and board for years.

How quick will Google find my site?
Depends on how quick your site is.

Don't for get the old chest nut of using the search button and read the Warrior forum rules that way you will use the right sub forum to post the thread where you get maxim value for the thread.

It's a very good forum post or I should say topic. I'm also tired of these 'obscure' questions on WF.

First, try to find an answer by searching the archives of the forum or mailing list you plan to post to. Try to find an answer by searching the Web. Try to find an answer by reading the manual. Try to find an answer by reading a FAQ. Try to find an answer by inspection or experimentation. Try to find an answer by asking a skilled friend.

And... If you're a programmer, try to find an answer by reading the source code

What I look for is some evidence--a basic SHRED of evidence--that the poster has done some looking and thinking on their own.

And the proof of that is in small details.

A more specific question demonstrates that the poster has done some work before asking. That shows commitment, and as commitment is in short supply here, I want to reward that person for their effort.

If the question gives me the impression of a baby lying there helplessly crying, "Feed Me!", that's a real turn-off to responding.

Well said, Jason. I find that I don't mind helping people if they have made a genuine attempt to find the answers themselves.
Google is a powerful tool and has most answers if a person starts to look.

I hate receiving emails that basically ask me to do everything for the person while they sit back and watch without having lifted a finger. That's a true sign of laziness.

    Nice Laurence
It's a pity that the people who would really benefit from this thread will probably never read it...... I've come to realize some people just don't care to play by the rules.....

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Very true. We can't help everyone but even if a few people get benefit from this thread, then it was worthwhile starting it.
